  • A DC resistance type humidity sensor using conductive carbon ink was fabricated and its performance was evaluated. The humidity sensor was fabricated using a screen printing technique and have a structure that does not require additional metal electrodes to measure resistance change. To evaluate the performance of the humidity sensor, we measured the DC resistance change under various relative humidity levels. The fabricated humidity sensor showed a resistance change of about $2.5{\sim}50k{\Omega}$ in 11 ~ 95% RH environment. It also shows a linear relationship in the relative humidity versus log DC resistance graph. In comparison with commercial humidity sensor under real environment, it can be confirmed that the resistance of the humidity sensor changes to almost the same level as the measured humidity. These results show that the resistance type humidity sensor can be operated stably in actual environment.

  • Soft-pressure sensors have numerous applications in soft robotics, biomedical devices, and wearable smart devices. Herein, we present a highly sensitive electronic skin device with an isotropic wrinkled pressure sensor. A conductive ink for soft pressure sensors is produced by a solution process using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), poly 3-hexylthiophene (P3HT), carbon black, and chloroform as the solvents. P3HT provides high reproducibility and conductivity by improving the ink dispersibility. The conductivity of the ink is optimized by adjusting the composition of the carbon black and PDMS. Soft lithography is used to fabricate a conductive elastic structure with an isotropic wrinkled structure. Two conductive elastic structures with an isotropic wrinkle structure is stacked to develop a pressure sensor, and it is confirmed that the isotropic wrinkle structure is more sensitive to pressure than when two elastic structures with an anisotropic wrinkle structure are overlapped. Specifically, the pressure sensor fabricated with an isotropic wrinkled structure can detect extremely low pressures (1.25 Pa). Additionally, the sensor has a high sensitivity of 15.547 kpa-1 from 1.25 to 2500 Pa and a linear sensitivity of 5.15 kPa-1 from 2500 Pa to 25 kPa.

  • We present highly transparent liquid crystal displays (LCDs) using hybrid films based on carbon nanomaterials, metal grid, and indium-tin-oxide (ITO) grid. Carbon based nanomaterials are used as transparent electrodes because of high transmittance. Despite of their high transmittance they have relatively high sheet resistance. To solve this problem, we applied grid and made hybrid conductive films based on carbon nanomaterials. Conventional photolithography processes were used to make a grid pattern of metal and ITO. To fabricate transparent conductive films, carbon nanotube (CNT) ink was spin coated on the grid pattern. The transparency of the conductive film was controlled by shape and size of the grid pattern and the thickness of CNT films. The optical transmittance of CNT-based hybrid films is 92.2% and sheet resistance is also reduced to $168{\Omega}/square$. These substrates were used for the fabrication of typical twisted nematic (TN) LCD cells. From the characteristics of LCD devices such as transmittance, operating voltage, voltage holding ratio our devices were comparable to those of pristine ITO substrates. The result shows that the hybrid conductive films based on carbon nanomaterials could be alternative of ITO for the highly transparent LCDs.

  • Carbon composites for flexible fiber heating element were examined to improve the electrical conductivity in this study. Carbon composites using carbon black, denka black, super-c, super-p with/without CNF or dispersant such as BCS03 and Sikament-nn were prepared. Carbon composite slurry was coated on plane film and yarns(cotton, polyester) and the performances of prepared heating materials were investigated by checking electrical surface resistance, adhesion strength. The plane heating element using carbon black under natural drying condition($25^{\circ}C$) had better physical properties such as surface resistance(185.3 Ohm/sq) and adhesion strength(above 90%) than those of other carbon composite heating elements. From these results, polyester heating element coated by carbon black showed better electrical line resistance(33.2 kOhm/cm) than cotton heating element. Then, it was found that polyester heating element coated by carbon black with CNF(3 wt%) and BCS03(1 wt%) appeared best properties(0.604 kOhm/cm).

  • A single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) transparent conductive film (TCF) was fabricated using a simple inkjet printing method. The TCF could be selectively patterned by controlling the dot size to diameters as small as 34${\mu}m$. In thisrepeatable and scalable process, we achieved 71% film transmittance and a resistance of 900 ohm/sq sheet with an excellent uniformity, about $\pm$5% deviation overall. Inkjet printing of SWNT is substrate friendly and the TCF is printed on a flexible substrate. This method of fabrication using direct printing permits mass production of TCF in a large area process, reducing processing steps and yielding low-cost TCF fabrications on a designated area using simple printing.

  • In this study, electromechanical properties of carbon nanotube (CNT) thin film on flexible substrates were measured using a micro-tensile machine with functionality of simultaneous measurements of displacement, load and electrical resistance. The CNT thin film of about 100 nm thick was deposited on flexible substrates, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) using spraying and ink-jetting techniques. To investigate the effect of process condition on the electromechanical properties of CNT thin film, sets of CNT samples were fabricated under various heat treatments and microwave process. The microstructures of the CNT thin film before and after tensile test were investigated using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and the failure modes of the CNT thin films were identified to understand their electromechanical behaviors and interaction with the flexible substrates. Based on the experimental results, the use of CNT thin film as flexible electrodes and strain gages is discussed.

  • Blood circulation is one of the most important life support functions of our body. It is essential to maintain healthy blood circulation as problems with blood circulation can lead to numerous diseases and serious complications. This study developed women's leggings with gradual compression and soft surface heating functions to improve blood circulation, and evaluated their performance and wearability. A silicon print pattern was developed to provide gradual compression, and a flexible heating surface coated with MWCNT (multi-walled carbon nanotube) conductive ink was fabricated for comfort and thermal effect. For the design, incision lines and materials were applied in consideration of aesthetic aspects, and design lines and colors were altered using a 3D program. The developed leggings showed that blood circulation can be improved when gradual compression and heating functions are simultaneously applied. Results were confirmed through measurements of clothing pressure, blood flow, and surface temperature. In the subjective wearability evaluation, it was confirmed that wearers felt gradual pressure, and they showed high satisfaction with wearability and design.
