Preparation and Swelling Behaviors of Hydrogel Composed of Alginate, Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) and Polyaniline

  • Comb-type graft hydrogels composed of alginate and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) were prepared to manifest rapid temperature and pH sensitivity. To appear the electro-sensitivity, the polyaniline, conducting polymer, was added into the matrix. The swelling kinetics and ratios were compared under the various compositions of polyaniline. The swelling behaviors revealed that conducting polymer/hydrogel composites could control the swelling ratio and kinetics. The addition of polyaniline in the matrix improved the thermal stability in comparison with that of the hydrogel without polyaniline. In temperature sensitivity, the adding the polyaniline into the matrix decreased the degree of change in the swelling ratio. The swelling ratios continuously increased with increasing pH values. The drug release rate from the hydrogel increased with the adding the polyaniline and the applying the direct voltage to the hydrogels.

  • Space charge distributions and behaviors of polystyrene/polyaniline conducting blends were investigated using a pulsed electroacoustic(PEA) method. It was found that positive charges were accumulated near the cathode with increasing polyaniline content in polystyrene/polyaniline when electric field was applied. Breakdown phenomena was investigated by breakdown test and it was observed that dielectric strength was diminished as polyaniline content was increased. By Scanning Electron Microscopy, corss-sectional views of polystyrene/polyaniline conducting blends were observed that the particles of polyaniline were well distributed in polystyrene.

  • Increasing environmental concerns require to solve the problem produced due to the use of heavy metals in coating formulations. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new coating strategy employing inherently conducting polymers such as Polyaniline(PANI). Polyaniline films were electrosynthesized by oxidation of aniline on cold rolled and weathering sheets using the potentiostatic mode from an aqueous oxalic acid medium. Potentiodynamic polarization curves were obtained for cold rolled and weathering sheets in the aqueous solution of 3% sodium chloride. The structure and properties of polyaniline film were elucidated using SEM, DSC, SST. A high corrosion resistance of polyaniline films were observed with a gain of the corrosion potential around 600-900 mV positive in the substrate covered with polyaniline than in the case without it.

  • Stable polyaniline-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid(PANI-DBSA) fully dissolved in toluene was obtained by a direct one-step emulsion polymerization technique. By using the proper molar ratio of APS/aniline monomer and DBSA/aniline monomer, the highest conductivity(7 S/cm) of PANI was obtained. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of PANI confirmed PANI is emeraldine salt form. PANI/styrene polymers (polystyrene and styrene-butadiene copolymer) blends were prepared by mixing PANI solution with polymers in toluene. These blends exhibited the conductivity of 10$\^$-4/-10$\^$-3/ S/cm at 1 wt. % of PANI content. The mechanical property of conducting blend was decreased and TGA thermograms of conducting blends were similar to that of PANI. It had been checked that the flatness of coating layers of conducting blends decreased with increasing conducting components. It was also found that the morphology of blends was setting closer to that of PANI at higher conducting component contents.

  • The conducting composites were prepared by blending of polyaniline(PANI) as conducting polymer and nylon6,6 as matrix in m-cresol. The PANI was protonated with alkylbenzenesulfonic acid such as camphorsulfonic acid(CSA) or dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid(DBSA). The miscibility of the composites was improved and the electrical conductivity was increased by adding dioctylphthalate(DOP). The electrical conductivity of the composites depending on the amount of protonating agent and PANI complex and the morphology were investigated. When it was protonated with DBSA having long alkyl chain and the content of PANI complex was 25 wt%, the electrical conductivity of the compsosite was increased up to 1.02 S/cm.

  • The conducting composites were prepared by solution blending of polyaniline (PANI) as a conducting polymer and polycarbonate (PC) as a matrix in chloroform. Also the composites film was prepared by solution casting method. The PANI was protonated with alkylbenzenesulfonic acids, such as camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) or dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA). The electrical conductivity of composites prepared by solution casting was enhanced compared with that of compression molding. The electrical conductivity, tensile strength and morphology were observed as a function of the amount of protonating agent as well as PANI complex content. In general, as the PANI complex content was increased, the electrical conductivity increased. In the case of the composite film containing 25 wt % of PANI complex doped with DBSA, the electrical conductivity exhibited 3.18 S/cm.

Therefore, it is necessary to develop new coating strategy employing inherently conducting polymers such as polyaniline. Polyaniline is a conductive polymer that is synthesized by oxidation polymerization, and the electrochemical and chemical polymerization are possible for the oxidation of aniline. Electrochemical oxidation polymerization produces a fine surface and although voltage control is more convenient, it require electrolytic cells, and elaborate thin film can be acquired with the polymerization. Polyaniline films were electro-polymerized on cold rolled sheets using the galvanostat mode in the oxalic acidaniline-sodium molybdate electrolyte. The structure and properties of polyaniline film were studied using Potentiostat/Galvanostat 263A, FE-SEM,, AFM, SST, Colorimetry. A high corrosion resistance of polyaniline film was observed with an increase of corrosion potential by $500{\sim}600$ mV for the substrate covered with polyaniline.

  • Conducting polyaniline (PAni)-titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) nanocomposites have been synthesized by the inverted emulsion polymerization method. The resultant PAni-$TiO_2$ nanocomposites are characterized with their structural, morphological, conducting and optical properties.

Chemical synthesis of processable conducting polyaniline derivative with free amine functional groups

  • Processable conducting polyaniline derivative with free amine functional groups was successfully synthesized from the monomer o-phenylenediamine in aqueous hydrochloric acid medium using ammonium persulfate as an oxidative initiator. The synthesized poly(o-phenylenediamine) (PoPD) in critical condition was found to be completely soluble in common organic solvents like dimethyl sulfoxide, N,N-dimethyl formamide etc. From the intrinsic viscosity measurement, the optimum condition for the polymerization was established. The polymer was characterized by ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ($^1HNMR$) and thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses. The weight average molecular weights of the synthesized polymers were determined by the dynamic light scattering (DLS) method. From the spectroscopic analysis the structure was found to resemble that of polyaniline derivative with free amine functional groups attached to ortho/meta position in the phenyl ring. However, very little ladder unit was also present with in the polymer chain. The moderate thermal stability of the synthesized polymer could be found from the TGA analysis. The average DC conductivity of $2.8{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$ was observed for the synthesized polymer pellet after doping with hydrochloric acid.
