Conjugate heat transfer from a heat generating module ($31{\times}31{\times}7mm^3$) bonded through the module support on the floor of a parallel-plate channel(20mm high, 400mm wide, and 800mm long) to mixed convective air flow(0.2${\sim}$0.9m/s) is studied experimentally. The input power to the module is changed in a range 1.0${\sim}$4.5W, the floor thickness 0.2${\sim}$5mm, and the thermal resistance of module support, Rc:=0.06, 1.03 and 82.0K/W. Thermal conductance(Uc) of the board and convective thermal conductance($U_A$) from the module were derived, and the effect of V; Rc and t on Uc was investigated. It is found that the conjugate conductance (Uc) and the conductive heat transfer ratio ($Q_B$/Q) depend on the thermal resistance of the module support, the air velocity and the board thickness. The change of the module support resistance and the board thickness helps to elucidate the relative significance of heat transfer paths through the module support, the board, and from the board surface to the air. Additional information is investigated about the dependence of the heat transfer rate on the mixed convection parameter.
Objectives : Cue reactivity is a key factor that modulates motivational goal-directed behavior associated with compulsive drug-taking and relapse. We investigated whether acupuncture attenuated the skin conductance response and the heart rate response to smoking-related visual cues in smokers. Methods : Twenty-nine smokers were treated with real acupuncture (RA) or sham acupuncture (SA). The stress response inventory was measured on the 5th day after quitting smoking. The skin conductance response and the heart rate were measured to evaluate the autonomic changes to the smoking related visual cues on the same day. Results : The sympathetic alterations in skin conductance and the heart rate induced by the smoking-related visual cues were significantly lower in the RA group, as compared to the SA group. The stress response inventory, such as somatization and frustration, in the RA group was significantly lower than that of the SA group. Conclusions : Acupuncture ameliorated the stress symptoms as well as the sympathetic activation to smoking cues during withdrawal. These findings indicate that acupuncture might be a useful tool in smoking cessation by inhibiting smoking cues-induced autonomic responses.

Ion channels are important targets of anthelmintic agents. In this study, we identified 3 types of ion channels in Ascaris suum tissue incorporated into planar lipid bilayers using an electrophysiological technique. The most frequent channel was a large-conductance cation channel (209 pS), which accounted for 64.5% of channels incorporated (n=60). Its open-state probability (Po) was ~0.3 in the voltage range of -60~+60 mV. A substate was observed at 55% of the main-state. The permeability ratio of Cl- to K+ (PCl/PK) was ~0.5 and PNa/PK was 0.81 in both states. Another type of cation channel was recorded in 7.5% of channels incorporated (n=7) and discriminated from the large-conductance cation channel by its smaller conductance (55.3 pS). Its Po was low at all voltages tested (~0.1). The third type was an anion channel recorded in 27.9% of channels incorporated (n=26). Its conductance was 39.0 pS and PCl/PK was 8.6±0.8. Po was ~1.0 at all tested potentials. In summary, we identified 2 types of cation and 1 type of anion channels in Ascaris suum. Gating of these channels did not much vary with voltage and their ionic selectivity is rather low. Their molecular nature, functions, and potentials as anthelmintic drug targets remain to be studied further.

The objectives of this study were to determine the impact of soil water content on the growth, stomatal conductance, and photosynthesis of Kimchi cabbage and to evaluate proper parameters for development of growth models. There were five levels of irrigation amount treatments (0, 200, 300, 400, and 500 mL/d/plant) and those were commenced at one day after transplanting (DAT). We measured soil water content, stomatal conductance, photosynthesis characteristics, and the A-Ci curve. The growth of Kimchi cabbage as affected by irrigation amount was evaluated at 38 days after transplanting, however, the growth with 0 and 200 mL/d/plant irrigation amount treatments measured at 29 DAT. The relationship between soil water content and stomatal conductance was highly correlated ($r^2=0.999$) and the function represented by y = 6097.4x - 4.2984. The stomatal conductance of Kimchi cabbage leaves showed $300mmol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ when the soil water content was below $0.05m^3/m^3$. The stomatal conductance was rapidly decreased by scarcity of soil moisture. A-Ci curve indicated normal curve in fully irrigation treatment (500 mL/d/plant), however, $CO_2$ couldn't diffuse through the intercellular Kimchi cabbage leaves treated with 0 mL/d/plant. The dry weight of full irrigation treatment was greater approximately 6.8 times than that of deficit irrigation (0 mL/d/plant). In addition, leaf area index showed a logarithmic function (y = 16.573 + 3.398 ln x) with soil water content and that of R-squared represents 0.913. Results indicated that the soil water content was highly correlated with stomatal conductance and leaf area index. Indeed, the scarcity soil moisture reduced photosynthesis and retarded growth.
Diurnal changes of microclimatic conditions and tissue water relations were measured at two sites where Carpinus laxiflora and C. cordata were allopatrically distributed. The microclimatic conditions at a site where C. laxiflora was distributed produced severe water stress condition during summer months. Daily maximum temperature reached $30.4^\circC$ and the highest vapor pressure deficit was 1.31 KPa when 13 rainless days were continued. During this period soil water content decreased to below the field capacity even at a depth of 20 cm and xylem pressure potential also decreased to 2.04 MPa. However, turgor potential was maintained more than 0.4 MPa. Patterns of stomatal conductance were changed with evaporative demand and soil water availability. On the other hand, microclimatic conditions at a site where C. cordata was distributed were moderate water strees condition compared with those at a site C. laxiflora was distributed. Though soil water content was maintained above field capacity C. cordata showed a remarkable decrease in turgor potential and stomatal conductance throughout the experiment. These results indicate that there is a difference in habitat characteristics between the two species and C. laxiflora is more resistant than C. cordata to water stress.

Linear acoustic analysis has been performed to elucidate damping characteristics of acoustic cavities. Results have shown that resonant frequencies of acoustic cavity obtained by classical theoretic approach and present linear analysis are somewhat different from each other. This difference is due to the limitation of classical theory. To quantify the damping characteristics, acoustic impedance has been introduced and resultant absorption and conductance have been evaluated. Satisfactory agreement has been achieved with previous experiment. Finally the design procedure for optimal tuning of acoustic cavity has been established
Thin films of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) with various thicknesses were fabricated, and their optical and electrical properties were investigated. The SWNTs of various thicknesses were directly coated in the arc-discharge chamber during the synthesis and then thermally and chemically purified. The crystalline quality of the SWNTs was improved by the purification processes as determined by Raman spectroscopy measurements. The resistance of the film is the lowest for the chemically purified SWNTs. The resistance vs. thickness measurements reveal the percolation thickness of the SWNT film to be $\sim$50 nm. Optical absorption coefficient due to Beer-Lambert is estimated to be $7.1{\times}10^{-2}nm^{-1}$. The film thickness for 80% transparency is about 32 nm, and the sheet resistance is 242$\Omega$/sq. The authors also confirmed the relation between electrical conductance and optical conductance with very good reliability by measuring the resistance and transparency measurements.
This research suggests maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for the solar photovoltaic (PV) power scheme using a new constant voltage (CV) fractional order incremental conductance (FOINC) algorithm. The PV panel has low transformation efficiency and power output of PV panel depends on the change in weather conditions. Possible extracting power can be raised to a battery load utilizing a MPPT algorithm. Among all the MPPT strategies, the incremental conductance (INC) algorithm is mostly employed due to easy implementation, less fluctuations and faster tracking, which is not only has the merits of INC, fractional order can deliver a dynamic mathematical modelling to define non-linear physiognomies. CV-FOINC variation as dynamic variable is exploited to regulate the PV power toward the peak operating point. For a lesser scale photovoltaic conversion scheme, the suggested technique is validated by simulation with dissimilar operating conditions. Contributions are made in numerous aspects of the entire system, including new control algorithm design, system simulation, converter design, programming into simulation environment and experimental setup. The results confirm that the small tracking period and practicality in tracking of photovoltaic array.
A 50kW-4000rpm interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) applied to the high-performance electric vehicle (EV) is introduced in this paper. The main work of this paper is that a 2-D T-type lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) model is presented for IPMSM temperature rise calculation. Thermal conductance matrix equation is generated based on calculated thermal resistance and loss. Thus the temperature of each node is obtained by solving thermal conductance matrix. Then a 3-D liquid-solid coupling model is built to compare with the 2-D T-type LPTN model. Finally, an experimental platform is established to verify the above-mentioned methods, which obtains the measured efficiency map and current wave at rated load case and overload case. Thermocouple PTC100 is used to measure the temperature of the stator winding and iron core, and the FLUKE infrared-thermal-imager is applied to measure the surface temperature of IPMSM and controller. Test results show that the 2-D T-type LPTN model have a high accuracy to predict each part temperature.
Linear carbon chains (LCCs) encapsulated inside the hollow cores of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been experimentally synthesized and structurally characterized by Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. However, in terms of electronic conductivity, their transportation mechanism has not been investigated theoretically or experimentally. In this study, the density of states and quantum conductance spectra were simulated through density functional theory combined with the non-equilibrium Green function method. The encapsulated LCCs inside (5,5), (6,4), and (9,0) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) exhibited a drastic change from metallic to semiconducting or from semiconducting to metallic due to the strong charge transfer between them. On the other hand, the electronic change in the conductance value of LCCs encapsulated inside the (7,4) SWCNT were in good agreement with the superposition of the individual SWCNTs and the isolated LCCs owing to the weak charge transfer.
