A slab-wick heat pipe was fabricated and tested for applications where the condenser temperature is in a range of 80 to 12$0^{\circ}C$. The pipe material was 9.53 mm O.D. copper tube and the working fluids were ethanol and water. The total length of the heat pipe was 1.6 m, in which evaporator section was 1.4 m and the condenser was 0.10 m. The slab was a composite wick structure fabricated with STS316 wire screens. Thermal load was varied for a specified fill charge ratio and inclined angle. The optimum fill charge ratio was identified to be 110% based on a theoretical calculation of the pore space in the slab wick of the heat pipe. The maximum thermal load was 120W for ethanol and the same was 200W for water with the condenser temperature of 8$0^{\circ}C$. The thermal performance of the slab wick heat pipe is analysed in terms of temperature characteristics and thermal resistance against thermal load, tilt angle and fill charge ratio.
Thermal performance of a thermosiphon for medium-temperature solar thermal application was investigated. The working fluid was Dowtherm A and the container was made of STS 316L. The thermosiphon had a outer diameter of 12.7 mm and a total length of 2 m, where the evaporator and the condenser had the same length of 0.3 m and the adiabatic section was 1.4 m. Both the evaporator and the condenser were aligned horizontal with an elevation difference of 0.18 m to utilize the gravitational force for the working-fluid return. The optimum fill charge ratio of the working fluid was investigated to obtain the maximum heat transport with the lowest thermal resistance. The maximun input thermal load was 500 W and thermal resistance was $0.60^{\circ}C/W$.
A series of experiments was conducted to examine characteristics of a grooved flat-strip heat pipe having multiple heat sources. The inner grooves of the heat pipe have the aspect ratio of 1 to $2.5(0.42{\times}1.05$ mm) whose pitch was 0.6 mm. Four block heaters ($10{\times}20$ mm) were placed in the evaporator section at intervals of 20 mm and six different heating modes were tested. The maximum surface heat flux of 80 $W/cm^2$ was achieved while the operating temperature was kept below $100^{\circ}C$, In the nearest heating mode (from the condenser location), the heat pipe exhibited more stable temperature distribution than the far heating mode where the heaters is located furthest from the condenser.
Condensation heat transfer experiments for R-22 and R-407C refrigerants mixed with mineral oil and POE oil respectively were performed in straight and U-bend sections of a microfin tube. Experimental parameters were an oil concentration from 0 to 5%, a mass flux from 100 to $400 kg/m^2s$ and an inlet quality from 0.5 to 0.9. The enhancement factors for R-22 and R-407C refrigerants at the first straight section decreased continuously as the oil concentration increased. They decreased rapidly as the mass flux decreased and inlet quality increased. The heat transfer coefficients in the U-bend were the maximum at the $90^{\circ}$ position. The heat transfer coefficients at the second straight section within the dimensionless length of 48 were larger by a maximum of 33% than the average heat transfer coefficients at the first straight section.
Experimental study is carried out to investigate the heat transport capability and thermal resistance of sinusoidal axially grooved heat pipe, comparing its performance to trapezoidal axially grooved heat pipe. As a result from this work, the heat transport capability of sinusoidal grooved heat pipe is lower than that of trapezoidal grooved heat pipe for the same size of outer diameter. As the ratio of depth to width of sinusoidal groove heat pipe is higher, the heat transport capability of heat pipe becomes higher. It is found that Aluminum-ammonia heat pipes with sinusoidal and trapezoidal grooves have good thermal resistance, below 0.1$^{\circ}C$/W at evaporator section and below 0.05$^{\circ}C$/W at condenser section.
Flow boiling heat transfer in small-diameter round tubes has been experimentally studied. The experimental apparatus consisted mainly of refrigerant pump, condenser, receiver, test section of a 1.67 mm inner-diameter round tube and pre-heater for control of refrigerant quality at the inlet of test section. To investigate the effect of bubble nucleation site characteristics of different tube materials, three different tubes of copper, aluminum and brass were used. The ranges of the major experimental parameters were 5∼30 ㎾/$m^2$ of the wall heat flux, 0.0∼0.9 of the inlet vapor quality and the refrigerant mass flux was fixed at 600 kg/$m^2$s. The experimental results showed that the flow boiling heat transfer coefficients in small tubes were affected only by heat flux, but independent of mass flux and vapor quality. The effect of tube material on flow boiling heat transfer was observed small.
Cylindrical stainless-steel/sodium heat pipe for a high-temperature application was manufactured and tested for transient and steady-state operations. The container material was made of stainless-steel 316, and the working fluid was sodium. Stainless-steel 316 mesh screen was inserted as a capillary structure. The working fluid fill charge ratio was approximately 64 $\sim$ 181% based on the pore space of the wick. The outer diameter of the heat pipe was 12.7 mm and the total length was 250 mm. The evaporator part was 150 mm and the condenser 80 mm. The performance test of the heat pipe has been conducted in the furnace with up to 800 W. The variation of the average heat transfer coefficient was investigated as a function of heat flux and vapor temperature. As input thermal load increased, it was showed that difference of temperatures in evaporator and condenser decreased and that operating section and heat transfer characteristics at the heat pipe increased.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation requires an electric field composed of dozens of V/m to achieve stimulation. The stimulation system is composed of a stimulation coil to form the electric field by charging and discharging a capacitor in order to save energy, thus requiring high-pressure kV. In particular, it is charged and discharged in capacitor to discharge through stimulation coil within a short period of time (hundreds of seconds) to generate current of numerous kA. A pulse-type magnetic field is formed, and eddy currents within the human body are triggered to achieve stimulation. Numerous pulse forms must be generated to initiate eddy currents for stimulating nerves. This study achieved high internal pressure, a high number of repetitions, and rapid switching of elements, and it implemented numerous control techniques via introduction of the half-bridge parallel load method. In addition it applied a quick, accurate, high-efficiency charge/discharge method for transcranial magnetic stimulation to substitute an inexpensive, readily available, commercial frequency condenser for a previously used, expensive, high-frequency condenser. Furthermore, the pulse repetition rate was altered to control energy density, and grafts compact, one-chip processor with simulation to stably control circuit motion and conduct research on motion and output characteristics.
Experimental study is performed to investigate the effect of heat load and operating temperature on the thermal performance of a heat pipe with screen mesh wick. The heat pipe was designed in 200 screen meshes, 500mm length and 12.7mm O.D tube of copper, water as working fluid(4.8g) and nitrogen as non-condensible gas(NCG). The heat pipe used in this study has evaporator, condenser and adiabatic section, respectively. Experimental data of axial wall temperature distribution is presented for heat transport capacity, the temperature of cooling water of condenser, inclination angle, and operating temperature. For the results from this study, it is found that, for the same charging mass of working fluid, the initial operating temperature and the overall wall temperatures of heat pipe are higher for NCG charging mass of $5.0{\times}10^{-6}kg$ and $3.4{\times}10^{-6}kg$, than that of $1.0{\times}10^{-6}kg$.
