  • Now days, the marketing environment is rapidly changed. Therefore, a lot of companies try to reduce production cost. Especially, Design is a important activities in new product development. While the concepts of design for manufacturable and concurrent engineering have made significant advances in integrating the design function with other areas in the firm. There are still major gaps in timely and accurate costing information available to designers. Inappropriate design could result in high redesign cost and delay in product relation. The generation of design and improvement is a time-consuming and mentally exhaustion process. It involves combining design features to generate as many potential design as possible. As not all features combinations are feasible, decision-makers have to narrow down the potential solutions and subsequently select appropriate design for further development. This new study is composed of 3 steps aiming at the Low Cost Design of the product. The three steps are consisted that setting up the target Cost, estimating the current functional cost, the design of a unit's reviewing according to the priority of the difference between the target cost and the functional cost.

A Study on the Industrial Design in Computer Aided Product Development (컴퓨터 응용 제품개발 환경 하에서의 산업디자인에 관한 연구)

  • The paper aims to identify major research issues and basic framework of computer supported collaborative work in design through reviewing recent changes in product development which is getting more integrated, collaborative and computerized. At first the importance of collaborative work in design is discussed throughout the development of design process: from blackbox approach in vernacular design to recent Nigel Cross' es Hybrid model. Then Concurrent Engineering and Quality Function Depolyment are reviewed for showing recent phenomena of integration and collaboration in the process of product development. Computer-aided product development is demonstrated with the case of Blackboard system and Computergenerated form development. In order to outline the fundamental approach for computer-supported collaborative work in design, structures and processes of some related projects are introduced. Finally, based on the findings, some research issues for further rJevelopment are proposed.

  • Engineering design involves the specification of many variables that define a product, how it is made, and how it behaves applied to computer, communication and control fields. Before some variables can be determined, other variables must first be known or assumed. This fact implies a precedence order of the variables, and of the tasks of determining these variables consequently. Moreover, design of complex systems may involve a large number of design activities. In this paper, the activity-activity incidence matrix is considered as a representation of design activity analysis which mainly focuses on the precedence constraint with an object of doing IDEF3 in process-centered view. In order to analyze the activity-activity incidence matrix, a heuristic algorithm is proposed, which transforms an activity-activity, parameter-formula, and parameter-parameter incidence matrix into a lower triangular form. The analysis of the structured matrices can not only significantly reduce the overall project complexity by reorganizing few critical tasks in practice, but also aims at obtaining shorter times considering the solution structure by exploring concurrency.

Integrated Structural Design Operation by Process Decomposition and Parallelization (프로세스 분할 병행에 의한 통합 구조설계 운용)

  • Distributed operation of overall structural design process, by which product optimization and process parallelization are simultaneously implemented, is presented in this paper. The database-interacted hybrid method, which selectively takes the accustomed procedure of the conventional method in the framework of the optimal design, is utilized here. The staged application of design constraints reduces the computational burden for large complex optimization problems. Two kinds of numeric and graphic processes are simultaneously implemented by concurrent engineering approach in the distributed environment of PC networks. The former is based on finite element optimization method and the latter is represented by AutoCAD using AutoLISP programming language. Numerical computation and database interaction on servers and graphic works on independent clients are communicated through message passing. The numerical experiments for some steel truss models show the validity and usability of the method. This study has sufficient adaptability and expandability, in that it is based on general methodologies and industry standard platforms.

Development of a DMU System Operated on a PDM System (PDM 시스템에서 운용되는 DMU 시스템 개발)

  • In this paper, we explain the DMU (digital mockup) system based on the PDM system. Most manufacturing companies are trying to develop a competitive product by increasing the quality, shortening time to market (TIM) and reducing the cost of a product. Some technologies such as SE (System Engineering), CE (Concurrent Engineering), QFD (Quality Function Development), CI (Cost Innovation) and some systems such as CAD (Computer-Aided Design), CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering), CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing), PDM (Product Data Management) and visualization system are adopted for these purposes. Specially, DMU system utilizes a visualization system that shows the 3D shape of a product on the computer and it gives a quick intuition to a person whether he/she is an engineer or not. It also can induce the effects of CE and QFD. SO, 0 company is developing a DMU system integrating CAD, visualization and PDM system. The main feature of the developed DMU system is that it is entirely integrated with PDM system, which means that the 3D shape of any part or assembly can be retrieved through PDM system. The DMU system will change the development process, which will increase the competitiveness of a developed product.

THE INTEGRATION OF CAD/CAM/CAE BASED ON MULTI MODEL TECHNOLOGY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CYLINDER HEAD

  • The integration of CAD/CAM/CAE in product development is the key to realize concurrent engineering. Generally, different systems are employed in product development departments. These different systems create a lot of trout)toes such as difficulty in communication, misunderstanding and so on. A new approach to integrate CAD/CAM/CAE in one system based on CATIA thor the end-to-end process in cylinder head development is presented. Hulti Model Technology (MMT) is used to create consistent and associated CAD models for the end-to-end process in cylinder head development. The concept and method to create and organize multi models are discussed. A typical four-layer structure of HHT for mechanical products is defined. The multi level structure of the cylinder head models based on MMT is provided. The CAD models of cylinder head created based on MMT can be used as the consistent model. All models in the downstream of cylinder head development such as structure analysis, CFD, sand core design , casting simulation and so oil are associated with the CAD models. Practice shows the approach in this paper enables the development process to be carried concurrently and can obviously shorten time to the market, reduce product cost and improve product quality.

The database-interconnected multilevel hybrid method, in which the conventional design method and the optimal design approach are combined, is utilized there. The method selectively takes the accustomed procedure of the conventional method in the conceptional framework of the optimal design. Design conditions are divided into primary and secondary criteria This staged application of design conditions reduces the computational burden for large complex optimization problems. Two kinds of numeric and graphic processes, are simultaneously implemented on the basis of concurrent engineering concepts in the distributed environment of PC networks. Numerical computation on server and graphic works on independent client are communicated through message passing. Numerical design is based on the optimization methodology and the drawing process is carried out by AutoCAD using the AutoLISP programming language. The prototype design experimentation for some steel trusses shows the validity and usability of the method. This study has sufficient adaptability and expandability in methodology, in that it is based on general theory and industry standard systems.

  • This paper presents a new DFD methodology to estimate the standard disassembly time and evaluate the disassemblablity of a product. The disassembly time is estimated with some decision and influencing factors of disassembly using motion analysis. The disassemblablity is evaluated using weights of the decision and influencing factors and disassembly difficulty scores. and the tables that include the time and stores of disassembly are suggested Finally, a new DFD support system is implemented to help designers to analyze the Product during the design process in concurrent engineering.

  • Shipbuilding is a complex industry which contains a lot of knowledge, technology, and utilities. Hence, the necessity of the PLM (Product Life-cycle Management) system which manages life-cycle information of marine product has been increased. So, many studies related to shipbuilding PLM have been preceded, and there are some cases to be built. To implement collaboration and concurrent engineering of ship designing and manufacturing, interoperability of product data in heterogeneous system is required. Also, sharing and reusing knowledge are important for innovation of business process and productivity of enterprises. Even though many studies related interoperability of product data are going on in varies domain, the application to shipbuilding is deficient. This paper proposes a methodology for management and interconnection of BOM data based on ontology in heterogeneous PLM system of shipbuilding. Using Prot$\'{e}$g$\'{e}$-OWL, we built simple domain ontology of shipbuilding industry, and then, we integrated product information of shipbuilding BOM which is represented with different ontologies. We verified possibility of integration of shipbuilding BOM in heterogeneous PLM, using ontology.

A Study on the Development of the 3-Dimensional Digital Design Tool (3$D^3$T) (3D 디지털 디자인 도구 개발에 관한 연구)

  • In this time, CAD is most important tool in Product Design Process. Traditional design methods were hardly used in Concurrent Engineering Process. But, CAD tools based on Reverse Engineering method have a lot of serious problem in using designer's works. Especially, in the early stage in design process, adopting CAD tool is impossible, cause of a property of design - intuition. A late studies about CAD system have approaching its quantitative factors in not only software but also hardware. In this paper, I researched about the problems of traditional 3d CAD tools and the new interface approach methods in recent CAD studies. Then, I proposed the guidelines and two alternatives about to developing 3D3T in ubiquitous engineering environment.
