  • This study dealt with the influence of the replacement ratio of rapidly-chilled steel slag on fluidity and compressive strength of unsaturated polyester polymer concretes. The rapidly-chilled steel slag used in this study, a by-product which is produced by refining pig iron during the manufacture of steel, was controled by a air-jet method which rapidly cools substance melted at a high temperature. Experimental results show that fluidity and compressive strength of unsaturated polyester polymer concretes increase with increasing replacement ratio of rapidly-chilled steel slag. Use of rapidly-chilled steel slag was found to be effective for improving fluidity and compressive strength of rapidly-chilled steel slag.

  • This study investigates the properties of paste and mortar from different types and forms of silica fume on cement binder for ultra high strength. Although most Silica Fumes distributed in the market fulfill the KS quality standard, each type showed different levels of loss of ignition. When evaluating cement binder for ultra high strength in a form of paste. Flow, viscosity and moving freely time show great difference depending on the Silica Fume's form and type of primary particle's dispersibility. The evaluation of Silica Fume's dispersibility can be possible with the paste test since there is a high correlation of flow quality between paste and mortar. The compressive strength when using Silica Fume was correlated to the SiO2 content. Synthetically, selecting Silica Fume with the most the ideal primary particle is the key to optimizing the formation for cement binder for ultra high strength.

  • This study intended to determine how price-ending types used for menu products affected consumers' price evaluation and value perception and such behavioral intentions as purchase intention and search intention. The collected data went through statistical processing, including frequency analysis, factor analysis, T-test and ANOVA using an $SPSS/PC^+$ 12.0 statistical package. The results can be summarized as follows: First, as for differences in internal reference price by ending, internal reference price was lower if menu ending was an odd number than it was an even number, which indicates that consumers tend to consider the price of the menu products to be lower if the ending of menu products is an odd number. Second, menu price-ending was found to have significant differences on consumers' purchase intention, search intention, and value perception. But the results of two-way ANOVA showed that price ending by restaurant types had no effect on consumers' search intention and restaurant type. This study suggested a desirable external reference price-ending type for menu products as one of sales promotion strategies to menu products planners and drew up a concrete plan to determine which price-ending type is useful by consumers' personal properties.

  • To recycle coal bottom ash(denoted here as CBA) generated from thermal power plants as a functional construction material, artificial soil(denoted as AS) containing CBA with dredged soil(denoted as DS) at a ratio(wt%) of 70 : 30 was manufactured by means of material engineering with sintering in a rotary kiln at $1125^{\circ}C$ using a green body formed via extrusion processing. The properties of the soil mechanics of the AS and the as-received CBA were analyzed and compared. Compaction testing results determined an optimum moisture content of the AS and CBA at 18%. During these tests, the maximum dry unit weights of the materials were similar, at 1.57 and 1.58 $t/m^3$, respectively. The compressive strength levels of the AS and CBA concrete specimens were 5.1 and 5.4 $t/m^3$, respectively, both of which increased after materials engineering processing. In a consolidation test, the compression index of the AS and CBA was found to be $0.114{\pm}0.001$ in both cases. The values were similar regardless of the materials engineering processes, but during the consolidation of AS, its coefficient was higher than that of the CBA materials.

  • This paper investigates the size dependent effect on the vibration analysis of a porous nanocomposite viscoelastic plate reinforced by functionally graded-single walled carbon nanotubes (FG-SWCNTs) by considering nonlocal strain gradient theory. Therefore, using energy method and Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion are derived. In this article, the effects of nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio, strain gradient parameter, volume fraction of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), damping coefficient, porosity coefficient, and temperature change on the natural frequency are perused. The innovation of this paper is to compare the effectiveness of each mentioned parameters individually on the free vibrations of this plate and to represent the appropriate value for each parameter to achieve an ideal nanocomposite plate that minimizes vibration. The results are verified with those referenced in the paper. The results illustrate that the effect of damping coefficient on the increase of natural frequency is significantly higher than the other parameters effect, and the effects of the strain gradient parameter and nonlocal parameter on the natural frequency increase are less than damping coefficient effect, respectively. Furthermore, the results indicate that the natural frequency decreases with a rise in the nonlocal parameter, aspect ratio and temperature change. Also, the natural frequency increases with a rise in the strain gradient parameter and CNTs volume fraction. This study can be used for optimizing the industrial and medical designs, such as automotive industry, aerospace engineering and water purification system, by considering ideal properties for the nanocomposite plate.

  • In this investigation, study of the bending response of functionally graded (FG) porous plates is presented using a cubic shear deformation theory. The properties of the FG-plate vary according to a power-law distribution which is modified to approximate material characteristics for considering the effect of porosities. The equilibrium equations are derived by using the principle of virtual work and solved by using Navier's procedure. Various numerical results are discussed to demonstrate the influence of the variation of the power index, the porosity parameter and the geometric ratios on the bending response of FG porous plates.

  • In the design of bridges, it is important to consider the thermal stresses induced by the non-linear temperature distribution as well as the variation of effective temperature in the bridge deck. To cope with this, design temperature profiles are provided by design codes, which are normally based on extensive research work. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive investigation on the thermal behaviour of bridges in Hong Kong with special emphasis on composite bridges. The temperature distribution in bridges depends primarily on the solar radiation, ambient air temperature and wind speed in the vicinity. Apart from data of the meteorological factors, good estimates of the thermal properties of material and the film coefficients are necessary for the prediction of temperature distribution. The design temperature profiles for various types of composite bridge deck with bituminous surfacing and concrete slab of different thicknesses are proposed. The factors affecting the design effective temperature are also reviewed and suitable values for Hong Kong are proposed. Results are compared with recommendations of the current local code. The method facilitates the development of site-specific temperature profiles for code documents, and it can also be applied to create zoning maps for temperature loading for large countries where there are great climatic differences.

  • The concept of the seismic slit shear wall was proposed in the early 1990's. A series of experimental and theoretic studies on the wall with reinforced concrete short connecting beams cast in the slit were carried out. In this paper another type of slit shear wall is studied. It is one with vertical slit purposely cast within the wall, and the rubber belt penetrated by a part of web shear reinforcement as seismic energy-dissipation device is filled in the slit. Firstly, an experiment under cyclic loading was carried out on two shear wall models, one slit and the other solid. The failure mechanism and energy-dissipation capacity are compared between the two different models, which testifies the seismic performance of the slit wall improved significantly. Secondly, for engineering practice purpose, a macroscopic analytical model is developed to predict the nonlinear behavior of the slit shear wall under cyclic loading. The mechanical properties of each constituent elements of this model are based on the actual behavior of the materials. Furthermore, the effects of both the axial force and bending moment on the shear behavior are taken into account with the aid of the modified compression-field theory. The numerical results are verified to be in close agreement with the experimental measurements.

  • The present work was aimed to show the possibility of using hydrogel (acrylic/boric acid) for evaluation of the neutron radiation shielding. The influence of acrylic acid concentration, different gamma doses and relative contents of boric acid were studied. The physical properties and the thermomechanical stability of the studied samples were investigated. The shielding property of the composite for neutron was tested by Pu-Be neutron source (5 Ci) under room temperature. The neutron fluence rates and gamma fluxes were measured using a stilbene organic scintillator. The macroscopic effective removal cross-section ΣR (cm-1) of fast neutrons and total attenuation coefficient μ (cm-1) of gamma rays has been studied experimentally. The transmission parameters, the relaxation length (??) and the half-value layer (HVL) were obtained. The obtained results indicated that the addition of boric acid to acrylic acid tends to increase the macroscopic effective removal cross-section ΣR (cm-1) to 0.141 compared to 0.094 of ordinary concrete.

  • Fire resistance is very essential for all buildings to save peoples who live within buildings or use and to protect the properties when the buildings are covered with fire. The fire resistance were evaluated by loading or nonloading fire tests which are known very expensive and require lots of time. That causes the lacks of research activities and there are only small cases of fire resistance. The purposes of this paper are to analyze the temperature analysis for various structural elements such as columns and beams those are can be applied to buildings and to suggest the resonable fire protective thickness of concrete slab according to the required fire resistance time.
