  • The confining effect of concrete was studied when a steel tube is set at the inside face of a hollow reinforced concrete column. To investigate the confining effect by a steel tube, 36 specimens were tested and compared. Test results show that the inserted steel tube provide sufficient confinement to the confining effect depends on the thickness of the steel tube. And also, test results show that the provided confinement by a steel tube increase the strength of concrete.

  • Due to many advantages of advanced composite materials, research on the application of composites to the construction industry is initiated. In this paper, fabrication methods efficient for infrastructures and application examples of each method are discussed. It also presents the structural characteristics of concrete filled glass fiber reinforced composite tubular member. Experimental results shows that strength and ductility of composite compression member is considerably increased due to concrete confinement action of composite surface.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the influence of interface and confinement on bond between reinforcing steel and concrete subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. The key variables for the experimental program include rib height, rib spacing for reinforcing bars and confinement. From the results obtained in this study, the following main observations can be made for the bond properties. Bond strength increases when confinement increases under monotonic and cyclic loading. Bond stiffness and strength drop remarkably after the maximum bond strength. Both bond stiffness and strength also drop at a constant slip when the number of cyclic loading increase. The bond resistance subjected to cyclic loading decreases significantly for reinforcing bars with low rib height.

  • In this study, confinement stress of concrete compression members rehabilitated with C.F.L were analyzed from the test. Test parameters are spacing, thickness and ply of rehabilitation material. Displacement, failure load were measured during test. The failure mode and ultimate load were analyzed from these measured data. In this study, a model equation for calculation of the confining stress with C.F.L was proposed based on the test results investigated here. The proposed equation included the effects of spacing, thickness and ply of rehabilitation material.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the seismic behavior and ductility of circular spiral reinforcement concrete bridge columns used in high strength concrete. The experimental variables consisted of transverse steel amount and spacing, different axial load levels. From the test results, sufficient displacement ductility(at least 5.5) was observed for the columus which was satisfied wi th the requirement confinement steel amount of the Korean Bridge Design Specification. In case of the columns with 50 MPa of concrete compressive strength, the columns wi th 80 % of the confinement steel amount requirement showed adequate displacement ductility(at least 6.5) under 0.2 of axial load level. And in case of the columns with 60.2 77a of concrete compressive strength, the columns with 44 \ulcorner of the confinement steel requirement provided adequate displacement ductilit under less than 0.1 of axial load level and the columns with 0.22 % provided showed comparatively high the ducti1iffy under 0.21 of axial load level.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the damage of the reinforced concrete bridge piers. For the purpose of this research, twelve reinforced concrete specimens were fabricated and experimented with quasi-static test method. The selected test parameters are lap splice, axial load ratio, confinement steel ratio and number of loading cycle. The method of evaluate of damage index is the model proposed by Park and Ang. In accordance with this research, the most effective test parameter is lap splice of longitudinal steel. Therefore, the retrofit scheme of reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splice of longitudinal steel, which was constructed before 1992, must be settled without delay. Otherwise, the effect of axial force is trivial. The more confinement steel is less damage index and more loading cycle lead to raise damage. The damage statement proposed Park and Ang is the same with experimental results.

  • Because of the heavy demand of confining steel to restore the column ductility in seismic regions, it is more efficient to confine these columns by hollow steel tube to form concrete-filled-steel-tube (CFST) column. Compared with transverse reinforcing steel, steel tube provides a stronger and more uniform confining pressure to the concrete core, and reduces the steel congestion problem for better concrete placing quality. However, a major shortcoming of CFST columns is the imperfect steel-concrete interface bonding occurred at the elastic stage as steel dilates more than concrete in compression. This adversely affects the confining effect and decrease the elastic modulus. To resolve the problem, it is proposed in this study to use external steel confinement in the forms of rings and ties to restrict the dilation of steel tube. For verification, a series of uni-axial compression test was performed on some CFST columns with external steel rings and ties. From the results, it was found that: (1) Both rings and ties improved the stiffness of the CFST columns and (2) the rings improve significantly the axial strength of the CFST columns while the ties did not improve the axial strength. Lastly, a theoretical model for predicting the axial strength of confined CFST columns will be developed.

  • The paper presents an experimental study of the structural behavior of circular flyash-concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns under axial compressive loads. In this study, 90% and 100% by weight of the cement in the concrete core was replaced with flyash. Twenty-seven specimens were tested to study the influence of flyash content, wall thickness of the steel tube, and curing age on the ultimate capacity and confinement effect. The experimental results were compared with the design values calculated using AISC-LRFD (1999), ACI (1999), AIJ (1997) and Eurocode 4 (1994). From the experimental study, it was determined that the confinement effect of circular steel tubes filled with high content flyash concrete was better than that of specimens filled with ordinary Portland cement concrete. The 5.88-mm-thick steel tube filled with 100% flyash concrete was equivalent in strength to a steel tube filled with C30 concrete at 28 days.

  • In the present paper a mechanical model to predict the compressive response of high strength short concrete columns with square cross-section confined by transverse steel is presented. The model allows one to estimate the equivalent confinement pressures exercised by transverse steel during the loading process taking into account of the interaction of the stirrups with the inner core both in the plane of the stirrups and in the space between two successive stirrups. The lateral pressure distributions at hoop levels are obtained by using a simple model of elastic beam on elastic medium simulating the interaction between stirrups and concrete core, including yielding of steel stirrups and damage of concrete core by means of the variation in the elastic modulus and in the Poisson's coefficient. Complete stress-strain curves in compression of confined concrete core are obtained considering the variation of the axial forces in the leg of the stirrup during the loading process. The model was compared with some others presented in the literature and it was validated on the basis of the existing experimental data. Finally, it was shown that the model allows one to include the main parameters governing the confinement problems of high strength concrete members such as: - the strength of plain concrete and its brittleness; - the diameter, the pitch and the yielding stress of the stirrups; - the diameter and the yielding stress of longitudinal bars; - the side of the member, etc.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) columns can be strengthened by direct fastening of steel plates around a column, forming composite actions. This method can increase both the total load bearing area and the concrete confinement stress. To predict the axial load resistance of strengthened RC columns, the equivalent passive confinement stress of the stirrups and the steel jacket should be accurately quantified, which requires the stress in the stirrups and shear force in the connections to be first obtained. In this paper, parameters, i.e., the stress ratio of the stirrups and shear force ratio of steel plate connectors are utilized to quantify the stress of the stirrups and shear force in the connections. A mechanical model for determining the stress ratio of the stirrups and shear force ratio of steel plate connectors is proposed and validated using the experimental results in a previous study. The model is found to be robust. Subsequently, a parametric study is conducted and the optimum stress ratios of the stirrups and the optimum shear force ratios of connectors are proposed for engineering designs.
