  • This paper reports the results of an experimental program involving several small-scale columns which were constructed to simulate corrosion damage in the field using two accelerated corrosion techniques namely, constant voltage and constant current. A total of six columns were cast for this experiment. For one pair of regular RC columns, corrosion was accelerated using constant voltage and for another pair, corrosion was accelerated using constant current. The remaining pair of regular RC columns was used as control. In the experiment, all the columns were subjected to cyclic wetting and drying using sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. The currents were monitored on an hourly interval and cracks were visually checked throughout the test program. After the specimens had suffered sufficient percentage steel loss, all the columns including the control were tested to failure in compression. The test results generated show that accelerated corrosion using impressed constant current produces more corrosion damage than that using constant voltage. The results suggest that the constant current approach can be better used to simulate corrosion damage of reinforced concrete structures and to assess the effectiveness of various materials, repair strategies and admixtures to resist corrosion damage.

  • Composite materials are effective in forming externally bonded reinforcements which find applications related to existing structures repair, attributed to their high strength-to-weight ratio and ease of installation. Among various composites, fibre reinforced polymers (FRP) have somewhat been largely accepted as a commonly utilized composite for such purposes. It is only recently that steel fibres have been considered as additional members of the FRP fibre family, intuitively termed as steel reinforced polymer (SRP). Owing to its low cost and permissibility of fibre bending at sharp corners, SRP is rapidly becoming a viable contender to other FRP systems. This paper investigates the bond behaviour of SRP-concrete joints with different bonded lengths (50, 75, 100, 150 and 300 mm) and widths (15, 30, 40, 50, and 75 mm) using single-lap shear tests. The experimental specimens contain SRP strips with a fixed density of steel fibres (0.472 cords/mm) bonded to the face of concrete prisms. The load responses were obtained and compared in terms of corresponding load and slip boundaries of the constant region and the peak loads. The failure modes of SRP composites are discussed, and the range of effective bonded length is evaluated herein. In the end, a new analytical model was proposed to estimate the SRP-concrete bond strength using a genetic algorithm, which outperforms 22 existing FRP-concrete bond strength models.

  • Recently, the researches on the durability design of concrete structures have been studied. As the examples, models to evaluate the service life prediction of the structure have been developed. The purpose of this article is to develop the model for predicting remaining service life. The final aim is to provide the user time for repairing the concrete structures. In addition, it makes possible to maintain the concrete structure economically. 70 reservoirs out of the inland concrete structures were selected and concrete structures of their components were surveyed. Two methods were used for measuring carbonation; TG/DTA method and Phenolphtalein indicator and, the value of pH was measured by the pH meter, After deriving correlations of calcium carbonate and used year, duration from completion year to 2002, pH value, and concrete cover depth the model was developed for predicting remaining service life by measuring data as small as possible. The conventional models had been developed on the basis of experiment data obtained from the restricted lab environment like as carbon gas exposure. On the other hand this model was developed on the basis of measuring data obtained from the real field that the complex deterioration actions are occurred such as freezing and thawing, carbonation, steel corrosion, and so on. The reliability of the developed model will be evaluated high in this point and this model can help to maintain concrete structures economically by providing the manager time to repair the deteriorated concrete structures in site of facility management.

  • To repair the deteriorated concrete structures, the deteriorated parts should be removed by using surface treatment methods and replaced by new construction materials. Hydrodemolition is one of the most effective methods for chipping off the deteriorated concrete and treating the remaining concrete. The water jet can remove the deteriorated concrete without damaging the reinforcement steel and surrounding aggregates. Using the water jet system improves surface texture, which ensures to improve adhesive strength between new and old concretes. In this study, three different concrete slab strengths and two water jet machine sets were investigated. Experimental results showed the relationship between concrete strength and water jet condition and this would enable to provide the information of the domestic water jet system and specification, which would contribute to automatization and efficiency of concrete repairing and rehabilitation works.

  • This study is based on the evaluation of a single component injection type adhesive repair material and a new 2 component type used in leakage of underground concrete structures. The studies showed that based on different mix ratio of the 2 component type adhesive sealant comprised of an asphalt main and latex mixture agent the viscosity of the material compound differed significantly. Based on a permeability testing, injection and economic efficiency, and performance, the appropriate ratio was determined to be 6:1 and was proceeded to the KS F 4935 evaluation method. The 2 component type adhesive sealant uses a static mixer and a cartridge type container for the injection procedure and was able to satisfy the evaluation criteria outlined in the KS F 4935 standard.

  • In this study, various materials such as epoxy material, urethane material, cement material, and acrylic material are used to solve the water leakage occurring in underground structures. However, in the reality that the durability is insufficient and the effect is insufficient, it is aimed to improve the repairing effect by using acrylics. As a second study, it is confirmed that leachate can be used as a repair material by considering long time under water stability, elongation range test, fatigue resistance test, tube stability test, damage recovery performance ana temperature stability considering leakage environment for polyacrylate. In addition, this material is applied to Expansion Joint to perform leakage repair, and to verify the effect of repairing leakage by monitoring and visual observation of concrete humidification.

  • The waterproof construction for walls and floor in the underground parking lot in the construction of the apartment buildings have been excluded to the introduction of the waterproof design until now, because of the shorten construction period and the reduced construction costs. The concrete structures are existed to the joints in the vertical or horizontal parts commonly. In case of cracks, there are generated due to behavior by subsidence and external changing temperature environment. The cracks are generated by the frequent water leaks. So, the repair methods of the water leaks are proposed as the quick micro-cement and the polyacrylic resin in this study.

  • Almost all concrete structures have many inevitable cracks for various reasons such as drying shrinkage, heat liberation of cement, fatigues or repeating loads and movements. Conventionally, they are repaired with epoxy materials. The Epoxy resins used by repair materials are different from properties of the base concrete materials such as thermal and mechanical properties - thermal expansion coefficients, bending strength. And the epoxy resin cannot release the water inside the concrete structure and cause corrosion of the steel bars. In this study, before the experiment got launched, we had analyzed cement and slag. Then We blended the two grades of ultra fine cement using high blaine cement and slag. And the cement slurry was produced by water and suprplasticizer to each blended ultra fine cement in various conditions. The slurry produced by each conditions was evaluated with flow properties such as viscosity, dropping time, segregation and observation of dry surface after injection.

  • Fast-setting cement is usually used for emergency repair construction of roads, bridges, buildings and so on. In this study, we tried to develop fast-setting ultra early strength mortar for prepacked concrete and evaluated the properties of fresh and hardened concrete with it. The flowability of the mortar was high enough to be easily poured into coarse aggregates. It showed high early strength development which can make it possible to use newly constructed structures within $3\~4$ hours regardless of curing conditions such as curing temperature and curing environment. And it also showed good resistance to drying shrinkage and chemical attack.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the feasibility of Carbon Fiber Sheet(CFS), a kind of high strength fiber, for a repair and reinforcement method of concrete structures. The experimental program included tests of flexural beams different in wrapping method and amount of CFS. The beams were subjected to monotonic loading. Although the flexural strength for concrete members increases with wrapping methods of CFS., the reduction factor due to the distribution, amount bond of CFS should be completely examined. This study approached the effectiveness and application of CFS, along with reinforcement effects of CFS on reinforced concrete beams through tests. Test results indicated that the increase in the number of CFS layer caused the increase in strength of beams in strength.
