  • The complex coupling relationship between liquid sodium and concrete materials affects both the sodium fire characteristics and concrete properties through heat and chemical erosion. In this study, experiments on direct and indirect (separated by a steel plate) contact of the columnar sodium fire with the concrete surface were performed. It was found that the combustion efficiency of liquid sodium in direct contact with concrete was significantly enhanced and accompanied by intermittent explosions and splashing of small concrete fragments. The sodium fire on the surface of the concrete considerably increased the internal temperature, pore size, and distribution density of the concrete. In addition, the depth of influence on the loosening of the concrete structure was also greatly extended. The contact of liquid sodium with the concrete substantially affected its permeability resistance. The water absorption of the concrete surface was increased by more than 70% when liquid sodium directly impacted the bare concrete surface. However, the change in water absorption in the centre of the concrete was primarily affected by the duration of the external heat.

  • Recently, the concrete floor finishing robot, which can be used for flattening and smoothing the concrete floor, has been developed in Korea and Japan. While the previous research assumes that the concrete floor is deformable and the trowel is rigid in modeling the concrete floor finisher, we assume that the concrete floor is rigid and the trowel is deformable. Based on this assumption, we derived the equations of motion and found the convergent velocity of the concrete floor finisher using the computer simulation. From these results, we can understand the relationship between the motion characteristics and the design and control parameter of the robot.

  • In these days, mostof marine structures are constructed by reinforcement concrete due to economic reason. Theoretically, it is widely recognized that rebar in sound concrete is safe against corrosion because of the high alkalinity of concrete. However, corrosion for reinforcement concrete made by marine aggregate and exposed to ocean enviroments has become serious social problem. Especially in Korea, with the rapid economic growth construction activities have been accelerated and needed more natural aggregate. Therefore, inevitably marine aggregate had to be used due to limitation of good quality aggregate. In this study, as a part of efforts to establish the fundamental counterplan on corrosion problems related to marine aggregate, concrete specimens with chloride containing material and inhibitor have been studied. And, in order to analyze corrosion characteristics several electrochemical techniques including half-cell potential survery, linear and cyclic polarization tests were carried out.

  • As a rule, in case of CFT for high-rise building, high strength concrete is required since it should have high fluidity, segregation resistance and large proportion of cement per unit considering the filling beneath the diaphragm. However, regarding the low-rise building under 20 stories, it is somewhat difficult to use high strength concrete. This is a fundamental study to develop a concrete with normal strength and high fluidity for CFT of low-rise building, whose Purposes are in speculating several kinds of changes in concrete's characteristics through various experiments and offering basic documents for practicalization in site and production through mock-up test.

  • The cement can be influenced by the temperature. Especially, when it is cold weather, it causes some problems in such properties as mixing, placing and curing of concrete. According to the Concrete Standard Specification(2003), in case of the average daily outdoor temperature below $4^{\circ}C$, it recommends to use the cold weather concrete. In this research, the on-site quality characteristics of the cold weather concrete using high early strength portland cement(Type III cement) were studied. As a result, the cold weather concrete using high early strength portland cement can obtain its excellent properties and benefit the cost of construction.

  • The purpose of the present study is to identify the damage characteristics of concrete structures due to cracking by employing the acoustic emission techniques. A comprehensive experimental study has been done. The cracking damages under tensile and flexural loadings have been identified and the bond damage between steel and concrete have been also characterized. It is seen that the amplitudes and energy level of AE events is found to be smaller for bond cracking damages and larger for tensile cracking damages. The characteristic equations of the AE events for various cracking damages have been proposed based on the present test data. The internal microcracks are progressively developed ahead of a visible actual crack and the present study clearly exhibits thses damage mechanism for various types of cracking in concrete. The present study provides very useful data which can be used to identify the various types of cracking damages in concrete structures. This will allow very efficient maintenance of concrete structures through monitoring of internal cracking based on acoustic emission.

  • Tests of cylindrical concrete specimens under lateral confining pressure of up to 5,000 psi were conducted for two different axial loading cases: monotonic compression and monotonic tension. The purpose of this experimental investigation is to provide stress-strain characteristics of plain concrete in triaxial stress conditions. Lateral confining pressure levels, loading rates, and strength of concrete specimens are varied as parameters. The loading rates are $34.75$\times$10^{-5}$ in/in/sec for fast, $\times$$6.95x10^{-5}$ in/in/sec for normal. and $0.579$\times$10^{-5}$ in/in/sec for slow loading cases. The concrete specimens used in the experiment have compressive strength of 3,500 psi and 6,500 psi, respectively. Findings of this experiment include dependency of the stress-strain behavior of concrete on the above parameters under two different types of loading conditions. The parametric study includes a series of 106 triaxial tests.

  • Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements are more durable and have superior surface friction compared to most dense-graded asphalt. However, data collected to date generally show PCC pavements to create more noise than asphaltic surfaces. Recent research has shown that some of the new concrete pavement textures are worthy of further examination. One of these, exposed aggregate surfaces, appear to provide better noise quality characteristics as well as good frictional characteristics and durability. In this paper, we considered the relationship between noise level and various textures of exposed aggregate concrete (EAC) pavement by tire impact noise measurement. As the results of that, it was suggested that optimum surface texture and manufacturing condition of EAC in order to reduce tire and pavement interaction noise. Conclusively, we would like to recommend optimum condition of EAC pavement at the respects of materials and treatment. Furthermore, Frequency spectrum as well as A-weighted noise level was also evaluated to analyze properties of noise between PCC and EAC.

  • The objective of this study the mechanical characteristics of prefoamed lightweight foamed concrete using the mineral foam agent which has high lightness, and strength. The compressive strength of lightweight foamed concrete using mineral foam agent are about 2 times degree high those the of lightweight foamed concrete using vegetable foam agent. Lightweight foamed concrete was able to obtain the result of 50kg/㎠ or more compressive strength, when was unit weight 0.8t/㎡. In the case of the same unit weight of concrete, it is influenced by w/c of foam agent ratio. The paper present extensive data on characteristics of compressive strength of the concrete manufatured with the different factors in mix design and also present optimum mix proportion.

  • In this research, the physical properties of fresh concrete using lime stone powder as a part of cement were investigated. Fresh concrete using lime stone powder was prepared with various lime stone powder replacement($5{\sim}12$ volume %) for cement and the quantities of sand aggregate ratio in concrete were 47.3%, 48.5% and 49.4% of ratio of sand aggregate. The workability, flowing characteristics, air content and bleeding of concrete using lime stone powder were tested and the results were compared with those of ordinary portland cement concrete. In the experiment, we acquired satisfactory results at the point of fresh concrete characteristics using lime stone powder within the replacement ratio of $8{\sim}12%$ and the optimum quantity of sand aggregate ratio in concrete was found to be $48.5%{\sim}50%$ of ratio of sand aggregate.
