  • Integration of CAM and CAM information is important in the CIM era. For a CIM system, the feature representation can be a solution to the integration of product model data. These are geometry feature, functional feature, and manufacturing feature in the feature context. This paper proposes a framework to integrate the configuration design method, parametric modeling and the feature modeling method. The concept of design unit which is one level higher than functional feature and parametric modeling concept with functional features have been proposed.

  • As the networks connect the world, enterprises tend to move manufacturing activities into virtual spaces. Since different software applications use different data terminology, it becomes a problem to interoperate, interchange, and manage electronic data among heterogeneous systems. It is said that approximately one billion dollar has been being spent yearly in USA for product data exchange and interoperability. As commercial CAD systems have brought in the concept of design feature for the sake of interoperability, terminologies of design features need to be harmonized. In order to define design feature terminology for integration, knowledge about feature definitions of different CAD systems should be considered. STEP standard have attempted to solve this problem, but it defines only syntactic data representation so that semantic data integration is not possible. This paper proposes a methodology for integrating modeling features of CAD systems. We utilize the ontology concept to build a data model of design features which can be a semantic standard of feature definitions of CAD systems. Using feature ontology, we implement an integrated virtual database and a simple system which searches and edits design features in a semantic way.

  • As the networks connect the world, enterprises tend to move manufacturing activities into virtual spaces. Since different applications use different data terminology, it becomes a problem to interoperate, interchange, and manage electronic data among different systems. According to RTI, approximately one billion dollar has been being spent yearly for product data exchange and interoperability. As commercial CAD systems have brought in the concept of design feature for the sake of interoperability, terminologies of design feature need to be harmonized. In order to define design feature terminology for integration, knowledge about feature definitions of different CAD systems should be considered. STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product model data) have attempted to solve this problem, but it defines only syntactic data representation so that semantic data integration is unattainable. In this paper, we utilize the ontology concept to build a data model of design feature which can be a semantic standard of feature definitions of CAD systems. Using feature ontology, we implement an integrated virtual database and a simple system which searches and edits design features in a semantic way. This paper proposes a methodology for integrating modeling features of CAD systems.

  • In this paper, in order to avoid the deterioration of the pattern classification performance which results from the curse of dimensionality, we propose a new feature selection method. The newly proposed feature selection method is based on Fuzzy C-Means clustering algorithm which analyzes the data points to divide them into several clusters and the concept of a function with fuzzy numbers. When it comes to the concept of a function where independent variables are fuzzy numbers and a dependent variable is a label of class, a fuzzy number should be related to the only one class label. Therefore, a good feature is a independent variable of a function with fuzzy numbers. Under this assumption, we calculate the goodness of each feature to pattern classification problem. Finally, in order to evaluate the classification ability of the proposed pattern classifier, the machine learning data sets are used.

  • In this research, we examine whether and why temporal distance influences evaluations of two different types of brand extensions: concept-based extensions, defined as extensions primarily based on the importance or relevance of brand concepts to extension products; and similarity-based extensions, defined as extensions primarily based on the amount of feature similarity at the product-category level. In Study 1, we test the hypothesis that concept-based extensions are evaluated more favorably when they are framed to launch in the distant rather than in the near future, whereas similaritybased extensions are evaluated more favorably when they are framed to launch in the near rather than in the distant future. In Study 2, we confirm that this time-dependent differential evaluation is driven by the difference in construal level between the bases of the two types of extensions - i.e., brand-concept consistency and product-category feature similarity. As such, we find that conceptbased extensions are evaluated more favorably under the abstract than concrete mindset, whereas similarity-based extensions are evaluated more favorably under the concrete than abstract mindset. In Study 3, we extend to the case for a broad brand (i.e., brands that market products across multiple categories), finding that making accessible a specific product category of a broad parent brand influences evaluations of near-future, but not distant-future, brand extensions. Combined together, our findings suggest that temporal distance influences brand extension evaluation through its effect on the importance placed on brand concepts and feature similarity. That is, consumers rely on different bases to evaluate brand extensions, depending on their perception of when the extensions take place and on under what mindset they are placed. This research makes theoretical contributions to the brand extension research by identifying one important determinant to brand extension evaluation and also uncovering its underlying dynamics. It also contributes to expanding the scope of the construal level theory by putting forth a novel interpretation of two bases of perceived fit in terms of construal level. Marketers who are about to launch and advertise brand extensions may benefit by considering temporal-distance information in determining what content to deliver about extensions in their communication efforts. Conceptual relation of a parent brand to extensions needs to be emphasized in the distant future, whereas feature similarity should be highlighted in the near future.

  • The extraction of 'end-pixels' (i.e. end-members) aims to quantify the abundance of different materials in a single pixel, which becomes popular in the subpixel analysis for hyperspectral dataset. In this paper, we present a new concept called 'End-Pixel of Features (EPF)' to extends the concept of end-pixels for multispectral data and even panchromatic data. The algorithm combines the advantages of previous simplex and clustering methods to search the EPFs in the feature space and reduce the effects of noise. Some experimental results show that, the proposed methodology can be successfully used to hyperspectral data and other remote sensing data.

  • This paper describes a hierarchical structure for feature definition and classification, and feature representation method based on frame structure for process planning of prismatic machined components of injection mold. The concept of Volume Removal Directions and Vertical Faces is proposed to develop a method to define and to classify features for components of injection mold systematically. A method for classifying features by the combination of volume removal directions and vertical faces is developed, and also a feature representation method by using frame structure to represent design and manufacturing information is presented.

  • The IHO S-100 is a standard on the universal hydorgraphic data model for supporting information services that integrate various data in maritime and provide proper information for safety of vessels. The S-100 is used to develop S-10x product specifications which are standards on guideline for creation and delivery of specific data set in maritime. The product specification for feature-based data such as ENC(Electronic Navigational Chart) data includes a feature catalogue that describes characteristics of features in that feature-based data. The feature catalogue is developed by domain experts with knowledge on data of the target domain. However, it is not feasible to develop a feature catalogue according to the XML schema by manual. In the IHO TSMAD committee meeting, needs of developing technology on building feature catalogue has been discussed. Therefore, we present a feature catalogue builder that is a GUI(Graphic User Interface) system supporting domain experts to build feature catalogues in XML. The feature catalogue builder is developed to connect with the FCD(Feature Concept Dictionary) register in the IHO(International Hydrographic Organization) GI(Geographic Information) registry. Also, it supports domain experts to select proper feature items based on the relationships between register items.

  • By virtue of progress of computer science, CAD/CAM technology has been developed greatly in each area. But the problems in the integration of CAD/CAM are not yet solved completely. The reason is that the exchange of data between CAD and CAM is difficult because the domains of design and manufacturing are different in nature. To solve this problem, a feature based modeller is developed in this study, which makes it possible to communicate between design and manufacturing through features. The modeller has feature, the concept of semi-bounded plane is introduced, and implemented as a B-rep sheet model using half-edge data structure. The features are then created on a part by local modification of the boundary on a part based on feature template information. This approach generalizes the modelling of features in a geometry model.
