A synthetic gas reformed from hydrocarbon-based fuels consists of $H_2$, CO and $N_2$. Hydrogen contained in the synthetic gas is a very useful species in chemical processes, due to its wide flammability range and fast burning speed. The ESGI (Exhaust Synthetic Gas Injection) technology is developed to shorten the light-off time of three way catalysts through combustion of the synthetic gas in the exhaust manifold during the cold start period of SI engines. Before the ESGI technology is applied to the test engine, the authors set a test rig that consists of gas temperature and composition controllers, an exhaust pulse generator and an exhaust manifold with a visualization window, in order to optimize the point and conditions of injection of the synthetic gas. Through measuring burned gas temperatures and taking photographs of synthetic gas combustion at the outlet of the exhaust manifold, the authors tried to find the optimal injection point and conditions. Analysis of burned gas composition has been performed for various $O_2$ concentrations. As a result, when the synthetic gas is injected at the port outlet of the cylinder No. 4 and $O_2$ concentration exceeds 4%, combustion of the synthetic gas is strong and effective in the exhaust manifold.
Instantaneous water heater being not properly installed and not adequately maintained may produce fatal accidents due to carbon monoxide poisoning and suffocation. Insufficient supply of air into the gas appliance for complete burning of the fuel or blocking the outlet of the combustion gas could be a cause to increase carbon monoxide concentration in the exhaust gas of the gas appliance. In this work, the experiments are done with a collected instantaneous water heater using in domestic and the concentration of oxygen near the gas appliance and carbon monoxide in exhaust gas are observed to investigate the risk of instantaneous water heater. The concentration of oxygen near the gas appliance is reduced until 17.7% for the ratio of the ventilation area and floor area being 3.5%. If the outlet of combustion gas is blocked, the carbon monoxide concentration is steeply increasing more than 4,000ppm. Therefore, periodic checking the outlet of combustion gas is more important than vent area to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Oxygen has been used extensively in various industries for many years. Despite earlier successful attempts to use oxygen in industrial combustion furnaces, its full theoretical researches have only recently begun to be realized. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of oxygen enriched combustion. This paper analyzes the characteristics of oxygen enriched combustion, and deals with the experimental investigation of the flame temperature and NOx concentration in exhaust gas. The flame temperature, concentration of exhaust gas were measured and flame configurations were photographed according to the variation of oxygen concentrations in oxidizer.
Marine diesel engines with high thermal efficiency and fuel diversity used for propulsive power have been taking charge of important position on marine transport. However, marine environment has recently focused on emissions such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide which is generated from combustion of low grade fuels. EGR(Exhaust gas recirculation) system is one of effective methods to reduce the nitrogen oxide emission from marine diesel engines. In general, it is considered that recirculating gas influences fuel combustion and emissions in diesel engines. However, along with positive effects of EGR, the EGR system using fuels of including high sulfur concentration should be considered about re-combustion and activation of sulfur dioxide in recirculating gas. Therefore, in experimental study, an author investigates effects of sulfur dioxide mixture concentration in intake air on combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a direct injection diesel engine. In results, change of sulfur dioxide concentrations in intake air had negligible impact on combustion chamber pressure, rate of heat release and emissions compared with effects of oxygen decreasing and carbon dioxide increasing of EGR.

Natural gas combustion characteristics of mass produced oxygen carrier particles were investigated in a batch type bubbling fluidized bed reactor. Five particles, NiO/bentonite, OCN601-650, OCN702-1100, OCN703-950, OCN703-1100 were used as oxygen carrier particles. Natural gas and air were used as reactants for reduction and oxidation, respectively. During reduction reaction, high fuel conversion and high $CO_2$ selectivity were achieved for most of oxygen carriers. During oxidation, NO emission was very low. These results indicate that inherent $CO_2$ separation and low NOx combustion are feasible for the natural gas fueled chemical-looping combustion system. Among the five oxygen carriers, OCN703-1100 particle was selected as the best candidate for demonstration of long-term operation in large-scale chemical-looping combustor from the viewpoints of fuel conversion, $CO_2$ selectivity, $CH_4$ concentration, and CO concentration.
An Experimental study was conducted on $CO_2$ recycle combustion heating system using pure oxygen instead of conventional air as an oxidant, which is thereby producing a flue gas of mostly $CO_2$ and water vapor($H_2O$) and resulting in higher $CO_2$ concentration. The advantages of the system are not only the ability to control high temperatures characteristic of oxygen combustion with recycling $CO_2$. but also the possibility to reduce NOx emission in the flue gas. A small scale industrial reheating furnace simulator and specially designed variable flame burner were used to characterize the $CO_2$ recycle oxy-fuel combustion, such as the variations of furnace pressure, temperature and composition in the flue gas during recycle. It was found that $CO_2$ concentration in the flue gas was about 80% without $CO_2$ recycle, but increased to $90{\sim}95%$ with $CO_2$ recycle. The furnace temperature and pressure was decreased due to recycle and the NOx emission was also reduced to maintain under 100ppm.
A diode laser sensor system based on absorption spectroscopy techniques has been developed to measure $CO_2$ concentration and temperature non-intrusively in high temperature combustion environments using a 2.0 ${\mu}m$ DFB(Distributed Feedback) laser. Two optics was fabricated in pig-tail fashion and all optical components were implemented in a single box. The evolution of measurement sensitivity was done using test cell by changing sweep frequency and $CO_2$ concentration. Gas temperature was determined from the ratio of integrated line strengths. Species concentration was determined from the integrated line intensity and the measured temperature. The result show that the system has 2% error in wide operation frequency range and accuracy of $CO_2$ concentration was about 3%. The system was applied to measure temperature and concentration in the combustion region of a premixed $CH_4$ +air triangular flame. The measurement results of gas temperature agreed well with thermocouple results. Many considerations were taken into account to reduce optical noise, etalon effect, beam steering and base line matching problem. The evaluations results and actual combustion measurement demonstrate the practical and applicability for in-situ and real time combustion monitoring in a practical system.
We conducted a test of a direct burning of crude Jatropha oil (CJO) in a commercial boiler system. The fuel, crude Jatropha oil is not biodiesel which comes from transeterification process of bio oil, but it is pure plant oil. The higher heating value (HHV) of the CJO is 39.3 MJ/kg (9,380 kcal/kg) and is higher than that of a commercial heating oil, 37.9 MJ/kg. The kinematic viscosity of CJO is 36.2 mm2/s at $40^{\circ}C$ and 8.0 mm2/s at $100^{\circ}C$. The burner used in the test is a commercial burner for a commercial heatingoil and its capacity is 140 kW (120,000 kcal/h). We did a preliminary test whether the combustion is stable or not. The preliminary test was a kind of open air combustion test using the commercial burner with crude Jatropha oil. We found that the combustion can be stable if the crude Jatrophaoil temperature is higher than $90^{\circ}C$. We measured the flue gas concentration by using a gas analyzer. The NOx concentration is $80{\sim}100\;ppm$ and CO concentration is nearly 0 ppm at flue gas O2 concentration of 3.0 and 4.5%.
Co-combustion of syngas in an existing boiler can be one of the options for replacing conventional fossil fuel with alternative fuels such as waste and biomass. This study is aimed to investigate effects of syngas cocombustion on combustion characteristics and boiler efficiency. An experimental study was performed for a pilot-scale furnace with 4 oil burners. Tests were conducted with mixture-gas as a co-combustion fuel and heavy oil as a main fuel. The mixture-gas was composed of 15% CO, 7% $H_2$, 3% $CH_4$ and 75% $N_2$ for simulating syngas from air-blown gasification. And LHV of the mixture-gas was 890 kcal/$Nm^3$. Temperature distribution in the furnace and flue gas composition were measured for various heat replacement ratio by the mixture gas. Heat loss through the wall was also carried out through heat & mass balance calculation, in order to obtain informations related to boiler efficiency. Experimental results show that similar temperature distribution and flue gas composition can be obtained for the range of 0~20% heat replacement by syngas. NOx concentration is slightly decreased for higher heat replacement by the syngas because fuel NOx is decreased in the case. Meanwhile, heat loss is a bit decreased for higher heat replacement by the syngas, which implies that boiler efficiency can be a bit decreased when syngas co-combustion is applied to a boiler.
The potential of combustion treatment of low concentration VOC on a turbulent partially premixed flame has been studied experimentally. The significant decrease in hydrocarbon concentration from the low concentration VOC was observed with a turbulent partially premixed flame. The VOC/inert gas mixture whose fuel concentration is beyond the flammability limit could be treated in this method.
