  • A concentrating solar collector of parabolic-cylindrical type is designed and constructed to provide a heat source of higher temperature for drying processes. Usually collectors of concentrating type require such peripheral auxiliary units as solar tracking system, heat medium circulation pump and temperature controller. However in this study, for simplification's sake in the maintenance of a collector system, it is intended to design a concentrating collector system which does not furnish these auxiliary units by adapting natural circulation system instead of foced circulation and by adjusting collector system to solar altitude manually and periodically. And based on the experimental data, a conceptual design for a heat sources of 50KWt thermal output is presented and discussed.

The solar module was composed of the EMVJ solar cell, (Fresnel Lens-DCPC)concentrator and heat sink, and was measured by using the PASTF system. The experimental result and the result analysis for the individual item of the module were as f ollows; (1) The conversion efficiency of the module was 8.3%. (2) The optical efficiency of the concentrator was 46.5% (DCPC; 84.8%, Fresnel Lens; 54.8%). (3) The thermal loss of the solar cell was 4.9%. And methods for the further improvement of the concentrating solar module efficiency have been suggested.

  • A study on the traditional houses of North Korea(I) have been published in 1996. This paper is written to supplement the preceding paper. This paper aims at collecting new data of traditional house in North Korea. But still being prohibited for the researchers of South Korea to approach to the field, I had to depend on the memories and experiences of the immigrants from North Korea who are now living in Kangwon and Incheon Province. Through the questionnaire and drawings, they described vivid memory of their old houses. I was able to add new data of 70 cases, which are significant and valuable as much as those of the real field are. Those data, including the exisiting data, are enough for me to analize statstically the regional charateristics, the differnces among economical classes, and the periodical change. It opens the way for verfying the existing theory. Regional charateristics of house in North Korea can be described as followings: a. Hamkyong-do ; Concentrating spaces into one building, Double-fold type plan, Including 'cheongju-kan' space, Weak fences b. Pyongan-do ; Concentrating spaces into two buildings, 二 shape buildings , Single-fold type plan, Strong fence c. Pyongannam-do to Myolak mountains; Concentraing spaces into two buildings, ㄱ, ㄷ shape buildings, Single-fold type plan, Strong fence d. Southern area of Myolak mountains; Concentrating spaces into one building ㅁ shape building, Single-fold type plan with wooden floor space

  • In this study, we propose a integrated type concentrator and compare with the separated type concentrating method, to accommodate 2B+D ISDN basic access traffic. This system's blocking probabilities are analyzed in terms of each class of bit rate, number of output channels, number of subscriber lines, and offered traffic. The result shows that the proposed method can significantly increase the maximum number of subscriber lines connecting to the system via a T1 carrier, compared with that of the "CCITT proposed" multiplexing scheme or the separated type concentrating method.ng method.

  • The hall sensor is current detector using hall effect in semiconductor and the conventional type detect current with concentrating flux by current of conductor. So, detection of small current is very difficult because of residual magnetism. This paper give the experiments based results about method that detect the small DC current using minimizing the residual of hall element by magnetic modulation and concentrating flux. The suggested sensor can dector small current better than the conventional that.

  • The dish type solar thermal concentrating system can collect the solar energy above $800^{\circ}C$. It has a concentration ratio of 800 and total reflector area of $49m^2$. To operate solar receivers at high temperature, the optimum aperture size is obtained from a comparison between maximizing absorbed energy and minimizing thermal losses. The system efficiency is defined as the absorbed energy by working fluid in receiver divided by the energy coming from the concentrator. We find that system efficiency is stable in case of flow rate of above 6lpm. The system efficiency are 64.9% and 65.7% in flow rate of 6lpm and 8lpm, respectively. The thermal performance showed that the maximum efficiency and the factor of thermal loss in flow rate of 8lpm are 68% and 0.0508.

  • Solar collectors to be applied are mainly flat-plate or vacuum tube collector which is used for hot water supply of house because of low heat value and low temperature. There are a necessity to expand applicable scope of solar collector into the industrial process heat source and air conditioner for coping with renewable energy policy of government and industrial trend. This study is to analysis the performance of PTC solar collector of concentrating type and flat-plate of non-concentrating. For this, temperature difference and heating value as insolation of air outside is measured from these two collectors mounted on 2-axial solar tracking system. It is investigated that temperature profile obtained from PTC solar collector is uniform and collecting heat per unit area is 6.8kcal/$m^2$ min which is about 3 times with compare to flat-plate collector of 2kcal/$m^2$min. Also the amount of heat to be produced from PTC solar collector is 3 Mcal/$m^2$ which is about 2 times with compare to flat-plate collector of 1.5Mcal/$m^2$ as a result of operating these two collectors during one month. Therefore, it is obtained that heat collecting performance of PTC solar collector is superior to flat-plate.

  • The most effective methods of utilizing solar energy are to use the sunlight and solar thermal energy such as hybrid panel simultaneously and to use concentrator. From such a view point, systems using various kinds of photovoltaic panels were constructed in the world. However there have not been a type of panel using concentrator and hybrid simultaneously. If the sunlight are concentrated on the solar cell, cell conversion efficiency increase and the temperature of the solar cells increases. As the temperature of the solar cells increases, so cell conversion efficiency decreases. Therefore, for maintaining cell conversion efficiency at these conditions, it is necessary to keep the cell at low temperature. In this paper, after designing a concentrate rate for concentrating, we proposed model for cooling cell and using waste heat, and we compared with conventional panels after calculating the electrical and thermal efficiency using energy balance equation.

  • In this paper, the thermal performance of a heat spreader module for CPV(Concentrating Photovoltaic) cooling is experimentally investigated. In order to evaluate the thermal performance of the heat spreader module which consists of a Metal PCB and an aluminum alloy heat spreader, experiments are conducted with varying the type of the metal PCB, the thickness of the heat spreader, the inclination angle, and the applied heat flux. To validate the experimental data, three dimensional numerical simulations are performed using the commercial simulation tool in the present work. The experimental results are compared with the corresponding numerical results and are in close agreement with the numerical results. From the experimental results, the temperature difference between the maximum temperature and the ambient temperature increases with decreasing the thickness of the heat spreader and with increasing the applied heat flux. Also, it is found that the inclination angle significantly affects the thermal performance of the heat spreader. the maximum temperature difference of the heat spreader with the horizontal orientation is much larger than that with the vertical orientation.

  • KIER has been running a demonstration project for 10kWe solar thermal power generation. the project is to build and operate the first solar thermal power generation system in Korea. For concentrating solar thermal energy $40m^2$ dish type concentrator was adapted and a stirling engine is going to be integrated to the system for power production. At the moment building the dish concentrator including mirror and sun tracking system was completed and it's performance are being closely evaluated. This paper will introduce some detailed designs and construction procedures which we have experienced so far.
