  • As intuitive hardware interfaces continue to be developed, it has become more important to recognize the posture of the user. An efficient alternative to adding expensive sensors is to implement computer vision systems. This paper proposes a method to recognize a user's postured in a live broadcast bi-directional participatory TV program. The proposed method first estimates the position of the user's hands by generation a facial color map for the user and a motion map. The posture is then recognized by computing the relative position of the face and the hands. This method exhibited 90% accuracy in an experiment to recognize three defined postures during the live broadcast bi-directional participatory TV program, even when the input images contained a complex background.

  • This paper presents a method to capture the posture of the human lower-limbs on the 3D space by using a single camera and a planar mirror. The system estimates the pose of the camera facing the mirror by using four coplanar IR markers attached on the planar mirror. After that, the training space is set up based on the relationship between the mirror and the camera. When a patient steps on the weight board, the system obtains relative position between patients' feet. The markers are attached on the sides of both legs, so that some markers are invisible from the camera due to the self-occlusion. The reflections of the markers on the mirror can partially resolve the above problem with a single camera system. The 3D positions of the markers are estimated by using the geometric information of the camera on the training space. Finally the system estimates and visualizes the posture and motion of the both legs based on the 3D marker positions.

  • Recognition of 3D objects using computer vision is complicated by the fact that geometric features vary with view orientation. An important factor in designing recognition algorithms in such situations is understanding the variation of certain critical features. The features selected in this paper are the angles between landmarks in a scene. In a class of polyhedral objects the angles at certain vertices may form a distinct and characteristic alignment of faces. For many other classes of objects it may be possible to identify distinctive spacial arrangements of some readily identifiable landmarks. In this paper given an isotropic view orientation and an orthographic projection the two dimensional joint density function of two angles in a scene is derived. Also the joint density of all defining angles of a polygon in an image is derived. The analytic expressions for the densities are useful in determining statistical decision rules to recognize surfaces and objects. Experiments to evaluate the usefulness of the proposed methods are reported. Results indicate that the method is useful and powerful.

  • We propose a novel algorithm for measuring the radius of tubes. This proposed algorithm is capable of effectively removing added noise and measuring the radius of tubes within allowable precision. The noise is removed by using a candidate true center that minimizes the standard deviation with respect to the radius. Further, the disconnection in data points resulting from noise removal is solved by using a connection algorithm. The final step of the process is repeated until the value of the standard deviation decreases to a small predefined value. Experiments were performed using circle geometries with added noise and a real tube with complex noise and that is used in the braking units of automobiles. It was concluded that the measurement carried out using the algorithm was accurate within 1.4%, even with 15% added noise.

  • Crowded scenes analysis is a challenging topic in computer vision field. How to detect diverse motion patterns in crowded scenarios from videos is the critical yet hard part of this problem. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to mining motion patterns by utilizing motion information during both long-term period and short interval simultaneously. To capture long-term motions effectively, we introduce Motion History Image (MHI) representation to access to the global perspective about the crowd motion. The combination of MHI and optical flow, which is used to get instant motion information, gives rise to discriminative spatial-temporal motion features. Benefitting from the robustness and efficiency of the novel motion representation, the following motion pattern mining is implemented in a completely unsupervised way. The motion vectors are clustered hierarchically through automatic hierarchical clustering algorithm building on the basis of graphic model. This method overcomes the instability of optical flow in dealing with time continuity in crowded scenes. The results of clustering reveal the situations of motion pattern distribution in current crowded videos. To validate the performance of the proposed approach, we conduct experimental evaluations on some challenging videos including vehicles and pedestrians. The reliable detection results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

  • Among various region detector and shape feature extraction method, MSER(Maximally Stable Extremal Region) and SIFT and its variant methods are popularly used in computer vision application. However, since SIFT is sensitive to the illumination change and MSER is sensitive to the scale change, it is not easy to apply the image similarity retrieval. In this paper, we present a Scale and Rotation Invariant Region Feature(SRIRF) descriptor using scale pyramid, MSER and affine normalization. The proposed SRIRF method is robust to scale, rotation, illumination change of image since it uses the affine normalization and the scale pyramid. We have tested the SRIRF method on various images. Experimental results demonstrate that the retrieval performance of the SRIRF method is about 20%, 38%, 11%, 24% better than those of traditional SIFT, PCA-SIFT, CE-SIFT and SURF, respectively.

  • In this paper, we propose an indoor navigation system that can do walk safely to the destination for visually impaired persons. The proposed system analyzes images taken with the camera finds the ID of the marker to identify the absolute position of the pedestrian. Using the distance and angle obtained from IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) accelerometer sensor and a gyro sensor, the system decides the relative position of a pedestrian for the previous position to determine the next direction. At the same time, we simplify a complex spatial structure in front of user by means of ultrasonic sensors and determine an avoidance direction by estimating the patterns. Then, it uses a few IR(Infrared Rays) sensors to detect stair. Our system offers position of visually impaired persons incorporating multiple sensors and helps users to arrive to destination safely.

  • Recently, the field of computer vision has been actively researched through digital image which can be easily generated as the development and expansion of digital camera technology. Especially, research that extracts and utilizes the feature in image has been actively carried out. The image stitching is a method that creates the high resolution image using features extract and match. Image stitching can be widely used in military and medical purposes as well as in variety fields of real life. In this paper, we have proposed efficient image stitching method using fast feature descriptor extraction and matching based on SURF algorithm. It can be accurately, and quickly found matching point by reduction of dimension of feature descriptor. The feature descriptor is generated by classifying of unnecessary minutiae in extracted features. To reduce the computational time and efficient match feature, we have reduced dimension of the descriptor and expanded orientation window. In our results, the processing time of feature matching and image stitching are faster than previous algorithms, and also that method can make natural-looking stitched image.

  • The current VIPS are not effective in safety point of view, because they are originally developed for mimicking loop detectors. Therefore, it is important to identify vehicle trajectories in real time, because recognizing vehicle movements over a detection zone enables to identify which situations are hazardous, and what causes them to be hazardous. In order to improve limited safety functions of the current VIPS, this research has developed a computer vision system of monitoring individual vehicle trajectories based on image processing, and offer the detailed information, for example, incident detection and conflict as well as traffic information via tracking image detectors. This system is capable of recognizing individual vehicle maneuvers and increasing the effectiveness of various traffic situations. Experiments were conducted for measuring the cases of incident detection and abnormal vehicle trajectory with rapid lane change.
