  • The purpose of this study was to examine the English l sound in an English short story produced by 16 Korean students in order to determine various allophones of the sound using acoustic visual displays and perceptual judgments. The subjects read the story in a quiet office at normal speed. Each word included the lateral sound in onset or coda positions and before a vowel of the following word. Results showed as follows: Firstly, there was a durational difference between the two major groups. Also the majority of the subjects produced the clear l regardless of the contexts. Some students produced the sound as the Korean flap or the English glide [r]. A few missing cases were also seen. The dark l was mostly produced by the subjects of English majors in coda position with a few cases before a vowel in a phrase. Visual displays using the computer analysis were very helpful in distinguishing lateral variants but sometimes perceptual process would be necessary to judge them in fast and weak production of the target word. Further studies would be desirable to test the discrepancies between the acoustical and perceptual decisions.

  • Purpose: To analyze the exposure of middle school students to pornography. Method The Questionnaire. The data collected were from November 6 to November 12, 2000. The subjects of this study consisted of 664 middle school students in Kangwon Province. The data collected were analyzed using, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test and Pearson Correlation. The Result: The most frequently viewed program was computer pornography. Except no response about eighty-five percent (85%) of the subjects viewed the pornography prior to elementary school. Moreover, The subjects viewed pornography for the first time in a PC room. Lastly, this study found that there was a significant relationship between the frequency. consumed time and numbers of viewing media violence and the impulse to imitate and imitation acting after viewing the pornography. Conclusion: Realistic and future-directed strategies should be developed for middle school students to decrease their exposure to pornography.

  • Educational efforts in integrating various subjects which are closely related to one another have had positive results. Additionally, integrating subjects has shown to be more effective than teaching subjects independently. The purpose of this study is to propose, construct, and develop a theme-based integrated program that teaches elementary school student's subjects which are outside the regular curriculum such as electricity, electronics, programming, and energy by using Diki-3000. Thus, having considered the theoretical background of theme-based integrated program, elementary school subjects including home economics, science, social studies, and extracurricular activities have been analyzed and restructured into theme-based program. Students will learn about and familiarize themselves with these subjects by utilizing the Diki-3000 product. This program aims to improve students understanding of the aforementioned subjects by combining Diki-3000's strengths as an educational tool with the contents of theme-based integrated program. Moreover, the learning experiences gained from completing critical problem-solving activities which are beyond normal subject knowledge is expected to help develop learners' positive thinking skills.

  • This study was conducted to find adolescent females perception of body image. The survey was carried out by self-questionnaires with 463 female school and college students in Daegu. Analysis of data was done using t-test, and ANOVA with the SAS computer program. The average height, weight and BMI of the subjects were 161.2cm, 53.4kg and 20.51kg/$m^2$. It appeared that 33.3% of the subjects were off the normal range of body weight ; in particular 25.1% of the subjects were under weight. While the subjects’perception of their own current body image was not distorted, they were dissatisfied with their body image because they wanted a very thin figure. Subjects were divided into 3 groups -underweight, normal weight, overweight-according to their current body size. Their perceptions of ideal and desired figures differed significantly between the groups, but they thought a thinner figure than normal body image as ideal and desired body image even in overweight group. As a result, dissatisfaction of body image in the overweight group was significantly larger than the normal-weight group, and that of the normal-weight group was larger than the underweight group. Percentages of weight control attempt were 51.7% and 64.7% in the normal weight and underweight subjects, respectively. Subjects were divided into 2 groups according to their weight control experience : those who have attempted, and who have not attempted. Weight control attemptees had a higher level of dissatisfaction with their body image than non-attemptees, both because weight control attemptees were fatter, and they perceived a thinner figure as an ideal and as a desired body image thin non-attemptees. From the results of this study, we confirmed that one of reasons of excessive weight control behavior among adolescent females was distorted perception about ideal body image.

  • The course timetabling problem is a problem assigning a set of subjects to the given classrooms and different timeslots, while satisfying various hard constraints and soft constraints. This problem is defined as a constraint satisfaction optimization problem and is known as an NP-complete problem. Various methods has been proposed such as integer programming, constraint programming and local search methods to solve a variety of course timetabling problems. In this paper, we propose an iterative improvement search method to solve the problem based on constraint programming. First, an initial solution satisfying all the hard constraints is obtained by constraint programming, and then the solution is repeatedly improved using constraint programming again by adding new constraints to improve the quality of the soft constraints. Through experimental results, we confirmed that the proposed method can find far better solutions in a shorter time than the manual method.

  • Recently brainwaves are utilized diversely in the field of medicine, entertainment, education and so on. In the case of medicine, brainwaves are analyzed to estimate patients' diseases. However, the applications for entertainments usually utilize brainwaves as control signal without figuring out the characters of the brainwaves. Given that users' brainwaves are different each other, a normalization method is essential. The traditional brainwave normalization approaches utilize normal distribution. However, those approaches assume that brainwaves are collected enough to conduct normal distribution. When the few amounts of brainwaves are measured, the accuracy of the control signal based on the measured brainwaves becomes low. In this paper, we propose a normalization framework of BCI-based facial interfaces for novel volume controllers, which can normalizes the few amounts of brainwaves and then generates the control signals of BCI-based facial interfaces. In the experiments, two subjects were involved to validate the proposed framework and then the normalization processes were introduced.

  • In this paper, we proposed a brain-computer interface system using EEG signals. It can generate 4 direction command signal from EEG signals captured during imagination of subjects. Bandpass filter used for preprocessing to detect the brain signal, and the power spectrum at a specific frequency domain of the EEG signals for concentration status and non-concentration one is used for feature. In order to generate an adequate signal for controlling the 4 direction movement, we propose a new interface system implemented by using a support vector machine and a time-multiplexing method. Moreover, bio-feed back process and on-line adaptive pattern recognition mechanism are also considered in the proposed system. Computer experimental results show that the proposed method is effective to recognize the non-stational brain wave signal.

  • Programming ability becomes an essential ability for elementary and secondary school students as well as computer science major students in modern information society. Thus, improving programming ability has long been a research project for computer scientists and teachers in IT areas. There have been many research works for improving programming ability in various ways. At first glance, emotional intelligence is generally known as humanistic intelligence, and nothing to do with computer areas. In the recent works, emotional intelligence has a correlation with various subjects. The purpose of this paper is to analyze correlation between emotional intelligence and programing ability. For this purpose, extensive survey works are carried out and statistical results are analyzed. Based on statistical analysis, it is concluded that there is a correlation between emotional intelligence and programming ability.
