  • Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) is undoubtedly one of the most influential concepts to have been introduced into the manufacturing world in recent times. The successful CIM application is greatly depended on the way of the approach to given manufacturing environments. This paper reports a new approach in building CIM systems trough the development of a poen cell controller.

  • Recently, a lot of researches on material handling system are actively studied for realization of FA(Factory Automation), FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) and CIM(Computer Integrated Manufacturing). Management and application of material handling system are precondition technologies playing an important part in integration of production system including manufacturing. assemhly, and inspection cell. In this paper, the general situation of automation technology is investigated and technology level is analyzed in comparision with an advanced country. And the operation trend and part of material handling system including AS/RS, AGV, and Conveyor, are studied. And also technologies related to material handling system in the inside and outside of the country are studied.

  • We consider a Direct Input Output Manufacturing System(DIOMS) which has a munber of machine centers placed along a built-in Automated Storage/Retrieval System(AS/RS). The Storage/Retrieval (S/R) machine handles parts placed on pallets for the machine centers located at either one or both sides of the As/Rs. This report studies the operational aspect of DIOMS and determines the optimal operating policy by combining computer simulation and genetic algorithm. The operational problem includes: input sequencing control, dispatching rule of the S/R machine, machine center-based part type selection rule, and storage assignment policy. For each operating policy, several different policies are considered based on the known research results. In this report, using the computer simulation and genetic algorithm we suggest a method which gives the optimal configuration of operating policies within reasonable computation time.

  • Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) is an integrated, computer controlled complex of automated material handling devices and numerically controlled machine tools that can simultaneously process medium-sized volumes of a variety of part types. This paper discusses planning problems that can be solved for efficient use of an FMS and present an integrated decision support system for FMS production planning and scheduling problems. FMSDS(Flexible Manufacturing Systems Decision Support System) consists of data handling modules, part selection module, loading module, load adjusting module, scheduling module and simulation module etc. This paper presents the solution methodology of each subproblems and integrated interfaces between subproblems using hierarchical approaches and loop controls considering the relationships between subproblems. A case study by this model is presented.

  • This paper presents an automated visual inspection system for the electronic parts manufacturing process. In this system, a statistical process control (SPC) method is integrated into the automated inspection method on a real time base. It shows how the collected data can be analyzed with the SPC to provide process information. Also presented are studies of subpixel image processing technology to improve the accuracy of parts measurements, and the cumulative-sum (CUSUM) control chart for fraction defectives. An application of the developed system to connector manufacturing process as a part of computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) is presented.

  • This paper presents a real design and implementation of an intelligent client-server equipment controller in computer-integrated manufacturing systems. An automated manufacturing process is commonly controlled by a number of PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers), which are attached to various equipments. A manufacturing cell consists of a set of equipments or workstation, which are also controlled by equipment or cell controller. We propose an intelligent equipment controller which has two function: one is to request (collect) an important information from each equipment and the other is to send the collected equipment information to the upper level controller (shop floor controller). Two-phase approaches are considered for the development of equipment client-server controller. The first events are generated virtually using computer simulation. Using the virtually generated activities, operating software of equipment server is developed. The second phase is to embed the virtually developed software (controller) into a real manufacturing system. The proposed methodology might be a novel design and implementation of a virtual simulator, which could be used for developing an intelligent equipment server.

  • Modern manufacturing systems should cope with the frequent changes in a product model and disturbances in manufacturing process. The control system of such systems must cover a constant adaptation and high flexibility. Holonic Flexible Manufacturing Cell(HFMC) is introduced to handle these issues more successfully. It is based on the concept of autonomous co-operating agent, called 'Holon', which is a building block of a manufacturing system for transforming, transporting, storing and/or validating information and physical objects. In this paper the basic structure of the HFMC is represented by using Unified Modeling Language and Open architecture cell controller is developed for effective integration components of a manufacturing system. Also a new control model, called MuLOM(Multi-Layered Operation Model), is suggested to represent the control behaviour for a holonic flexible manufacturing cell control system.

  • Computer Integrated Manufacturing(CIM) requires models of manufacturing processes to be implemented on the computer. These models are typically used for determining optimal process control parameters or designing adaptive control systems. In spite of the progress made in the mechanistic modeling, however, empirical models derived from experimental data play a maior role in manufacturing process modeling. This paper describes the development of a meural metwork medel for injection molding. This paper describes the development of a nueral network model for injection molding process. The model uses the CAE analysis data based on Taguchi method. The developed model is, then, compared with the traditional polynomial regression model to assess the applicabilit in practice.

  • Digital Manufacturing is a technology facilitating effective developments and agile productions of the product via digital computer models representing physical and logical schema and the behavior of the real manufacturing systems including manufacturing resources, environments and products. For the successful application of this technology, a digital factory as a well-designed and an integrated environment is essential. In this paper, we constructed the sophisticated digital factory of a Korean automotive company's body shop, and conducted precise simulations of unit cell, lines and the whole factory for the collision check, the production flow analysis and the off-line programming. We expect that this digital factory of the body shop helps us achieve great savings in time and cost for many manufacturing preparation activities of the new car development.

Digital Manufacturing - a Strategy for Engineering Collaboration

  • How to achieve engineering collaboration among diverse engineering activities is one of the key topics in manufacturing fields nowadays. The infrastructure for collaborative engineering is essential, and it can be realized by information technologies and intelligent engineering applications in digital environments. Digital Manufacturing is a technology to facilitate effective product developments and agile productions by computer models representing the physical and logical schema and the behavior of real manufacturing systems including products, processes and factories. A digital factory as a well-designed and integrated digital environment is incorporated in it. In this paper, digital manufacturing is recommended as a good strategy for collaborative engineering, especially in product developments and productions. By business process analysis and some case studies, we suggested sophisticated digital models are very useful to concurrent and collaborative engineering. It is expected that digital manufacturing is a very good strategy for achieving dramatic time and cost savings in many engineering activities of many manufacturing industries, including machinery, automotive and shipbuilding.
