While Compton imaging is recognized as a valuable 3-D technique in nuclear medicine, reconstructing an image from Compton scattered data has been of a difficult problem due to its computational complexity. The most complex and time-consuming computation in Compton camera reconstruction is to perform the conical projection and backprojection operations. To alleviate the computational burden imposed by these operations, we investigate a rebinning method which can convert conical projections into parallel projections. The use of parallel projections allows to directly apply the existing deterministic reconstruction methods, which have been useful for conventional emission tomography, to Compton camera reconstruction. To convert conical projections into parallel projections, a cone surface is sampled with a number of lines. Each line is projected onto an imaginary plane that is mostly perpendicular to the line. The projection data rebinned in each imaginary plane can then be treated as the standard parallel projection data. To validate the rebinning method, we tested with the representative deterministic algorithms, such as the filtered backprojection method and the algebraic reconstruction technique. Our experimental results indicate that the rebinning method can be useful when the direct application of existing deterministic methods is needed for Compton camera reconstruction.

Electrical impedance tomography is a nondestructive imaging modality in which the internal resistivity distribution is reconstructed based on the injected currents and measured voltages inside a domain of interest. In this paper, an adaptive threshold value based region of interest (ROI) method is proposed to improve the spatial resolution of reconstructed images as well as to reduce the computational time of the inverse problem. Adaptive threshold value is calculated by INTERMODES method and ROI is determined from the domain based on this value. Moreover, the computational domain of image reconstruction is restricted within a ROI and iterative Gauss-Newton method is employed to estimate the resistivity distribution. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, numerical experiments have been performed and the results are analyzed.

The void distribution in concrete materials strongly affects its material properties. Therefore, the identification of spatial distribution of void is important to understand and estimate material behavior. To examine and quantify the void distribution inside lightweight aggregates, CT(computed tomography) image is used. 3D lightweight aggregate images are generated by stacking of cross-sectional images from CT. Spatial distribution of void of aggregate along the direction is visualized on the sphere using probability distribution function. Stiffness of lightweight aggregate for the directions is also examined. It is confirmed that direction-based probability distribution and stiffness from CT images are effective in characterizing void distributions of aggregates.
Computational anthropomorphic phantoms are computer models of human anatomy used in the calculation of radiation dose distribution in the human body upon exposure to a radiation source. Depending on the manner to represent human anatomy, they are categorized into two classes: stylized and tomographic phantoms. Stylized phantoms, which have mainly been developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), describe human anatomy by using simple mathematical equations of analytical geometry. Several improved stylized phantoms such as male and female adults, pediatric series, and enhanced organ models have been developed following the first hermaphrodite adult stylized phantom, Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD)-5 phantom. Although stylized phantoms have significantly contributed to dosimetry calculation, they provide only approximations of the true anatomical features of the human body and the resulting organ dose distribution. An alternative class of computational phantom, the tomographic phantom, is based upon three-dimensional imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and computed tomography (CT). The tomographic phantoms represent the human anatomy with a large number of voxels that are assigned tissue type and organ identity. To date, a total of around 30 tomographic phantoms including male and female adults, pediatric phantoms, and even a pregnant female, have been developed and utilized for realistic radiation dosimetry calculation. They are based on MRI/CT images or sectional color photos from patients, volunteers or cadavers. Several investigators have compared tomographic phantoms with stylized phantoms, and demonstrated the superiority of tomographic phantoms in terms of realistic anatomy and dosimetry calculation. This paper summarizes the history and current status of both stylized and tomographic phantoms, including Korean computational phantoms. Advantages, limitations, and future prospects are also discussed.
In EIT(electrical impedance tomography), the internal resistivity(or conductivity) distribution of the unknown object is estimated using the boundary voltage data induced by different current patterns using various reconstruction algorithms. In this paper, we present a regularized modified Newton-Raphson(mNR) scheme which employs additional a priori information in the cost functional as soft constraint and the weighting matrices in the cost functional are selected based on the exponentially weighted least square criterion. The computer simulation for the 32 channels synthetic data shows that the reconstruction performance of the proposed scheme is improved compared to that of the conventional regularized mNR at the expense of slightly increased computational burden.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the mechanical behavior of human lumbar vertebrae (L3/L4) with and without fusion bone under physiological axial compression. The author has developed the program code to build the patient specific three-dimensional geometric model from the computed tomography (CT) images. The developed three-dimensional model provides the necessary information to the physicians and surgeons to visually interact with the model and if needed, plan the way of surgery in advance. The processed data of the model is versatile and compatible with the commercial computer aided design (CAD), finite element analysis (FEA) software and rapid prototyping technology. The actual physical model is manufactured using rapid prototyping technique to confirm the executable competence of the processed data from the developed program code. The patient specific model of L3/L4 vertebrae is analyzed under compressive loading condition by the FEA approach. By varying the spacer position and fusion bone with and without pedicle instrumentation, simulations were carried out to find the increasing axial stiffness so as to ensure the success of fusion technique. The finding was helpful in positioning the fusion bone graft and to predict the mechanical stress and deformation of body organ indicating the critical section.

In electrical impedance tomography(EIT), various image reconstruction algorithms have been used in order to compute the internal resistivity distribution of the unknown object with its electric potential data at the boundary. Mathematically the EIT image reconstruction algorithm is a nonlinear ill-posed inverse problem. This paper presents a new combined method based on genetic algorithm(GA) and modified Newton-Raphson(mNR) algorithm via two-step approach for the solution of the static EIT inverse problem. In the first step, each mesh is classified into three mesh groups: target, background, and temporary groups. The mNR algorithm can be used to determine the region of group. In the second step, the values of these resistivities are determined using genetic algorithm. Computer simulations with the 32 channels synthetic data show that the spatial resolution of reconstructed images by the proposed scheme is improved compared to that of the mNR algorithm at the expense of increased computational burden.
Background: In recent events of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, computed tomography (CT) scans are being globally used as a complement to the reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests. It will be important to be aware of major organ dose levels, which are more relevant quantity to derive potential long-term adverse effect, for Korean pediatric and adult patients undergoing CT for COVID-19. Materials and Methods: We calculated organ dose conversion coefficients for Korean pediatric and adult CT patients directly from Korean pediatric and adult computational phantoms combined with Monte Carlo radiation transport techniques. We then estimated major organ doses delivered to the Korean child and adult patients undergoing CT for COVID-19 combining the dose conversion coefficients and the international survey data. We also compared our Korean dose conversion coefficients with those from Caucasian reference pediatric and adult phantoms. Results and Discussion: Based on the dose conversion coefficients we established in this study and the international survey data of COVID-19-related CT scans, we found that Korean 7-year-old child and adult males may receive about 4-32 mGy and 3-21 mGy of lung dose, respectively. We learned that the lung dose conversion coefficient for the Korean child phantom was up to 1.5-fold greater than that for the Korean adult phantom. We also found no substantial difference in dose conversion coefficients between Korean and Caucasian phantoms. Conclusion: We estimated radiation dose delivered to the Korean child and adult phantoms undergoing COVID-19-related CT examinations. The dose conversion coefficients derived for different CT scan types can be also used universally for other dosimetry studies concerning Korean CT scans. We also confirmed that the Caucasian-based CT organ dose calculation tools may be used for the Korean population with reasonable accuracy.
Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) on changes in airflow in the upper airway (UA) of an adult patient with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) using computational fluid-structure interaction analysis. Methods: Three-dimensional UA models fabricated from cone beam computed tomography images obtained before (T0) and after (T1) MARPE in an adult patient with OSAS were used for computational fluid dynamics with fluid-structure interaction analysis. Seven and nine cross-sectional planes (interplane distance of 10 mm) in the nasal cavity (NC) and pharynx, respectively, were set along UA. Changes in the cross-sectional area and changes in airflow velocity and pressure, node displacement, and total resistance at maximum inspiration (MI), rest, and maximum expiration (ME) were investigated at each plane after MARPE. Results: The cross-sectional areas at most planes in NC and the upper half of the pharynx were significantly increased at T1. Moreover, airflow velocity decreased in the anterior NC at MI and ME and in the nasopharynx and oropharynx at MI. The decrease in velocity was greater in NC than in the pharynx. The airflow pressure in the anterior NC and entire pharynx exhibited a decrease at T1. The amount of node displacement in NC and the pharynx was insignificant at both T0 and T1. Absolute values for the total resistance at MI, rest, and ME were lower at T1 than at T0. Conclusions: MARPE improves airflow and decreases resistance in UA; therefore, it may be an effective treatment modality for adult patients with moderate OSAS.

We proposed the objective ROC analysis method based on the setting of threshold value for evaluation of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) image. This proposed ROC analysis method uses the quantification computational threshold value to each signal on the SPECT image. The SPECT images for this study were acquired by using Monte Carlo n-particle extended simulation code (MCNPX, Ver. 2.6.0, Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA). The basic SPECT detectors and specific water phantom were realized in the simulation, and we could get the simulation results by the simulation operation. We tried to analyze the reconstructed images using threshold value application based objective ROC method. We can get the accuracy information of reconstructed region in the image. This proposed ROC technique can be helpful when we have to evaluate the weak signal for the NM image. In this study, the proposed threshold value based computational ROC analysis method can provide better objectivity than the conventional ROC analysis method.
