This paper reviews the current state-of-the-art in the numerical evaluation of wind loads on buildings. Important aspects of numerical modeling including (i) turbulence modeling, (ii) inflow boundary conditions, (iii) ground surface roughness, (iv) near wall treatments, and (vi) quantification of wind loads using the techniques of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are summarized. Relative advantages of Large Eddy Simulation (LES) over Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and hybrid RANS-LES over LES are discussed based on physical realism and ease of application for wind load evaluation. Overall LES based simulations seem suitable for wind load evaluation. A need for computational wind load validations in comparison with experimental or field data is emphasized. A comparative study among numerical and experimental wind load evaluation on buildings demonstrated generally good agreements on the mean values, but more work is imperative for accurate peak design wind load evaluations. Particularly more research is needed on transient inlet boundaries and near wall modeling related issues.

Cavitation is one of the most difficult physical phenomena to understand and predict. Many experimental and computational studies have been conducted for better understanding of the phenomenon. Recently, with the rapid development of computing hardware capacity and numerical methods, considerable advancement is observed in prediction of cavitation using computational fluid dynamics. To that end, many cavitation models have been developed and reported. In the present paper, some of the distinguished cavitation models are categorized and reviewed in terms of the computational frame work and formulation of transport equations. Then those characteristics are compared with each other.
Effect of visualization as a tool for the education of fluid dynamics is mainly discussed. Visualized images are much more understandable compared to the explanation using equations and texts. Several examples are presented to clarify this statement. Then, the software system for teaching fluid dynamics using the results by the numerical simulation is discussed. Two important issues on what is needed in the system are given. First, such systems should be capable of animating images. Second, such systems should be interactively used by students. Changing parameters, coefficients, equations, etc. themselves and watching the difference are important for them to understand the nature of physics underlying the equations. The teaching system with visualization is no doubt a good tool for introducing fluid dynamics.
Recently, thanks to the advanced computational power and numerical methods, it is made possible to analyze the flow around moving bodies using computational fluid dynamics techniques. In those simulations, moving mesh techniques should be able to represent both the body motion and boundary deformation, which are frequently encountered in fluid-structure interaction and/or six degree-of-freedom problems. In the present study, the staggered loosely coupling algorithm was used for fluid-structure interaction and the Laplacian operator based technique was used for moving mesh. For the verification of the developed computational method, the flow around a two-dimensional cylinder was simulated and analyzed.

This study was carried out for the purpose of minimizing the area of rapid flow inside the water tank. And the shape of incurrent canal was improved, and then the characteristics of fluid flow occurring inside the water tank was analyzed by using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation method. better multiple hoe screw nozzle incurrent canal was used instead of conventional drop current canal used for the water tank. And according to the results of analyzing the characteristics of fluid flow, in case a screw blade was installed inside the nozzle, fluid flow was sprayed wide. And wide fluid flow was shown inside the cylindrical water tank too. Besides, a tracer simulation was carried out, in case of installing 1 and 2 multiple hoe screw nozzle incurrent canals at the cubic water tank. As a result, MODAL, MODAL index value was close to 1, in case of installing 2 canals. Therefore, it was possible to obtain the results of being close to the characteristics of plug flow.
This paper proposes a method for extending simulating fluid on mobile device, which was only possible on desktop PC. Fluid simulation is done by solving Navier-Stokes equation numerically, and previous research were mainly focused on numerical stability [1], and realism [2]. However, such methods assume rich computational resources, which is not available on mobile devices. On the other hand, rigid-body solver is the mostly used physically-based technique [3], and only simple height field-based method is released for fluid simulation [4]. To overcome these problems, we proposes a modified incompressible fluid dynamics solver for the mobile device, and also we propose a technique for visualizing fluids on the mobile device.

A numerical technique for fluid-structure interaction, which is based on the finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), was developed for application to an industrial chimney equipped with a pendulum tuned mass damper (TMD). In order to solve the structural problem, a one-dimensional beam model (Navier-Bernoulli) was considered and, for the dynamical problem, the standard second-order Newmark method was used. Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible flow are solved in several horizontal planes to determine the pressure in the boundary of the corresponding cross-section of the chimney. Forces per unit length were obtained by integrating the pressure and are introduced in the structure using standard FEM interpolation techniques. For the fluid problem, a fractional step scheme based on a second order pressure splitting has been used. In each fluid plane, the displacements have been taken into account considering an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian approach. The stabilization of convection and diffusion terms is achieved by means of quasi-static orthogonal subscales. For each period of time, the fluid problem was solved and the geometry of the mesh of each fluid plane is updated according to the structure displacements. Using this technique, along-wind and across-wind effects have been properly explained. The method was applied to an industrial chimney in three scenarios (with or without TMD and for different damping values) and for two wind speeds, showing different responses.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) are commonly used techniques to evaluate the flow characteristics in the development stage of blood pumps. CFD technique allows rapid change to pump parameters to optimize the pump performance without having to construct a costly prototype model. These techniques are used in the construction of a bi-ventricular assist device (BVAD) which combines the functions of LVAD and RVAD in a compact unit. The BVAD construction consists of two separate chambers with similar impellers, volutes, inlet and output sections. To achieve the required flow characteristics of an average flow rate of 5 l/min and different pressure heads (left - 100mmHg and right - 20mmHg), the impellers were set at different rotating speeds. From the CFD results, a six-blade impeller design was adopted for the development of the BVAD. It was also observed that the fluid can flow smoothly through the pump with minimum shear stress and area of stagnation which are related to haemolysis and thrombosis. Based on the compatible Reynolds number the flow through the model was calculated for the left and the right pumps. As it was not possible to have both the left and right chambers in the experimental model, the left and right pumps were tested separately.

The small craft including jet-board for leisure are commonly smaller than the general commercial vessels. For the floating vessel, the motion analysis is significantly important component to design the shape. It is, however, hardly predicting its behavior by using conventional boundary element method due to violating small amplitude assumption for potential theory. The computational fluid dynamics method can afford to simulate such small craft, but its grid system was not able to calculate motion, because movable body disturbs the grid system by confliction. The dynamics fluid body interaction model with over-set mesh system can be dealt with movable floating body under irregular ocean wave. In this study, several cases were considered to reveal that DFBI is essential method to predict floating body motion. The single phase simulate was conducted to establish the shape perfection, and then the validated vessel was simulated with ocean waves weather DFBI option on or off. Through the comparison, the results between the cases of DFBI on and off shows significantly difference. It was claimed that the DFBI was necessary not only to calculation body motion, but also to predict accurate drag and lift force on the floating body for small size craft.
Unsteady natural convection of an enclosed fluid has been one of the fundamental thermo-fluid problems, of which dynamic relevance is found in many engineering applications. Together with the inherent coupling between the boundary layers and the interior core, and strong interaction between flow and temperature fields, the unsteadiness poses serious hurdles for analytical and experimental approaches. With the recent development of computers and solution algorithms, computational fluid dynamics has become the prevailing tool to tackle the underlying problems. In this presentation, a few examples of numerical studies are introduced. The usefulness and potential of numerical simulations in investigating unsteady natural convection are elaborated.
