  • In this paper, a complex-valued recursive least squares escalator filter algorithm with reduced computational complexity for complex-valued signal processing applications is presented. The local tap weight of RLS-ESC algorithm is updated by incrementing its old value by an amount equal to the local estimation error times the local gain scalar, and for the gain scalar, the local input autocorrelation is calculated at the previous time. By deriving a new gain scalar that can be calculated by using the current local input autocorrelation, reduced computational complexity is accomplished. Compared with the computational complexity of the complex-valued version of RLS-ESC algorithm, the computational complexity of the proposed method can be reduced by 50% without performance degradation. The reduced computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is even less than that of the LMS-ESC. Simulation results for complex channel equalization in 64QAM modulation schemes demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has superior convergence and constellation performance.

  • In the next generation wireless communication system, the beamforming technique based on a massive antenna is one of core technologies for transmitting and receiving huge amounts of data, efficiently and accurately. For highly performed and highly reliable beamforming, it is required to accurately estimate the Angle of Arrival (AOA) for the desired signal incident to an antenna. Employing the massive antenna with a large number of elements, although the accuracy of the AOA estimation is enhanced, its computational complexity is dramatically increased so much that real-time communication is difficult. In order to improve this problem, AOA estimation algorithms based on the massive antenna with the low computational complexity have been actively studied. In this paper, we compute and analyze the computational complexity of the cascade AOA estimation algorithm based on the Flexible Massive Concentric Circular Array (FMCCA). In addition, its computational complexity is compared to conventional AOA estimation techniques such as the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm with the high resolution and the Only Beamspace MUSIC (OBM) algorithm.

  • In satellite systems, efficient communication and observation require identifying of specific signal arrival points using onboard antenna systems. When utilizing massive array antennas to estimate the angle of arrival (AOA) of signals, traditional high-performance AOA estimation algorithms such as Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) encounter extremely high complexity due to the numerous individual antenna elements. Although, in order to improve this computational complexity problem, the cascade AOA estimation algorithm with CAPON and beamspace-MUSIC was recently proposed, the comparison of the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm across different massive array antenna configurations has not yet been conducted. In this paper, we provide the analyzed results of the computational complexity of the proposed cascade algorithm based on various massive array antennas, and determine an optimal antenna configuration for the efficient AOA estimation in satellite systems.

  • In this paper, we propose the computational complexity reduction methods of delta pitch search that is used in G.723.1 vocoder. In order to decrease the computational complexity in delta pitch search the characteristic of proposed algorithms is as the following. First, scheme to reduce the computational complexity in delta pitch search uses NAMDF. Developed the second scheme is the skipping technique of lags in pitch searching by using the threshold value. By doing so, we can reduce the computational amount of pitch searching more than 64% with negligible quality degradation.

  • Increase in computational cost and exhaustive search can lead to more complexity and computational energy. Thus, there is need for effective and efficient scheme to reduce the complexity to achieve optimal energy utilization. This will improve the energy efficiency and enhance the proficiency in terms of the resources needed to achieve convergence. This paper primarily focuses on the development of hybrid swarm intelligence scheme for reducing the computational complexity in binary optimization. In order to reduce the complexity, both artificial bee colony (ABC) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) have been employed to effectively minimize the exhaustive search and increase convergence. First, a new approach using ABC and PSO has been proposed and developed to solve the binary optimization problem. Second, the scout for good quality food sources is accomplished through the deployment of PSO in order to optimally search and explore the best source. Extensive experimental simulations conducted have demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the ABC approaches for reducing complexity and energy consumption in terms of convergence, search and error minimization performance measures.

  • This paper proposes new frame rate up-conversion algorithms. Adaptive motion estimation based on block complexity information are used to obtain more accurate motion vectors. Because the information on block complexity is extracted from the motion estimation prediction size from the original frame, additional computational complexity is not imparted. In experimental results, the proposed algorithms provide robust frame interpolation performance for whole test sequences. Also, the computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced to a benchmark algorithm.

  • N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a precoding method for sidelobe suppression of OFDM signals and seamlessly connects OFDM symbols up to the high-order derivative for sidelobe suppression, which is suitable for suppressing out-of-band radiation. However, it severely degrades the error rate as it increases the continuous derivative order. Two schemes for orthogonal precoding of N-continuous OFDM have been proposed to achieve an ideal error rate while maintaining sidelobe suppression performance; however, the large size of the precoder matrices in both schemes causes very high computational complexity for precoding and decoding. This paper proposes matrix decomposition of precoder matrices with a large size in the orthogonal precoding schemes in order to reduce computational complexity. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method can drastically reduce computational complexity without any performance degradation.

  • In cognitive radio networks (CRNs), the computational complexity of resource allocation algorithms is a significant problem that must be addressed. However, the high computational complexity of the optimal solution for tackling resource allocation in CRNs makes it inappropriate for use in practical applications. Therefore, this study proposes a power-based pricing algorithm (PPA) primarily to reduce the computational complexity in downlink CRN scenarios while restricting the interference to primary users to permissible levels. A two-stage approach reduces the computational complexity of the proposed mathematical model. Stage 1 assigns subcarriers to the CRN's users, while the utility function in Stage 2 incorporates a pricing method to provide a power algorithm with enhanced reliability. The PPA's performance is simulated and tested for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing-based CRNs. The results confirm that the proposed algorithm's performance is close to that of the optimal algorithm, albeit with lower computational complexity of O(M log(M)).

  • In this paper, we propose a fast video mixing method for reducing the computational complexity in the MCU (Multipoint Control Unit) used in the video conferencing. The conventional mixing method is based on the pixeldomain transcoder, of which computational complexity is linearly increased as the number of participants is increased. Basically the method requires N decoders and one huge encoder to mix the bitstreams from the N participants. To reduce the computational complexity, we propose a hybrid mixing method based on the bitstreamdomain and pixel-domain transcoding methods. The proposed method reduces the computational complexity about 45% at the improved quality, compared with the conventional mixing method based on the pixel-domain transcoders.

  • In the decoding process of interframe wavelet coding, the inverse wavelet transform requires huge computational complexity. However, the decoder may need to be used in various devices such as PDAs, notebooks, PCs or set-top Boxes. Therefore, the decoder's complexity should be adapted to the processor's computational power. A decoder designed in accordance with the processor's computational power would provide optimal services for such devices. So, it is natural that the complexity scalability and the low complexity codec are also listed in the requirements for scalable video coding. In this contribution, we develop a method of controlling and lowering the complexity of the spatial wavelet transform while sustaining almost the same coding efficiency as the conventional spatial wavelet transform. In addition, the proposed method may alleviate the ringing effect for certain video data.
