Experimental Study on the Performance of the Stirling Cryocooler with Nitrogen Refrigerant (질소냉매 스터링 냉동기의 성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The Stirling cryocooler with helium refrigerant has been widely used for the cooling of the infrared detector, and the alternatives of the helium in the Stirling cryocooler are nitrogen and hydrogen gas. In this study, the performance experiment of the small FPFD(Free Piston and Free Piston) type Stirling cooler and the moving coil type, dual acting linear compressor was performed when the nitrogen and helium is used for the working fluid The results show that the nitrogen refrigerant has small cooling capacity compared with the helium, but the performance characteristics of the linear compressor does not greatly changed.

  • In this study, an in-house program to predict steady state operation of micro gas turbines is constructed using MATLAB. The program consists of two parts: design and off-design simulations. The program is fully modular in its structure, and performance of each component (compressor, combustor, turbine, recuperative heat exchanger and pipe elements) is calculated in a separate calculation module using mass and energy balances as well as models for off-design characteristics. The off-design modules of compressor and turbine use performance maps, which are program inputs. The off-design operation of a micro gas turbine under development was predicted by the program. The prediction results were compared with those by commercial software, and the validity of the in-house program was confirmed.

  • The Stirling refrigerators have been widely used for the cooling of the infrared detector and HTS to the cryogenic temperature. The Stirling refrigerator with the rotary compressor are applicable to the cooling device for the compact mobile thermal imaging system, because the refrigerators have the compact structure and light weight. The typical performance factors of the Stirling refrigerator are the cool-down time, cooling capacity at the desired temperature and the input power. And the above performance factors are depends on the thermal insulation characteristics of the Dewar. In this study, the steady thermal load of the Dewar and the performance of the Stirling refrigerator were measured. The results show the dependency of the input power and the charging pressure on the performance of the refrigerator.

Finite Element Modeling for rubber grommet to reduce vibration refrigerator (냉장고 진동 저감을 위한 그로멧의 유한요소모델링)

  • In this study, vibration analysis of a refrigerator was carried out to reduce vibration by considering grommet. When the refrigerator machine room is modeled by finite element method, spring elements are added to constructions of the FEmodel for each component and update. To design the grommet of refrigerator, FEmodel must have vibration characteristics of each components such as baseplate, pipe and compressor it self. The modal analyses are conducted to validate suggested approach when the components of machine room are assembled together. And, in this study, optimal design of grommet is conducted to avoid the resonance at the operating frequency of refrigerator. The experimental and FEM result of suggested design showed good agreement and are presented here.

  • The turbocharger for a vehicle is consisting of a centrifugal compressor and turbine. These compressor and turbine are vibrating and emitting noises through the T/C body, exhaust system (Catalyst, Bellows, Pipe, etc) and Intake system (Hoses, Intercooler pipes, Intercooler) as rotating. A turbocharger cold test bench is constructed to reduce these noises, especially for the purpose of realizing transient operating environment and oil temperature control to simulate the vehicle operating characteristics with intake system and exhaust system. This research laid the groundwork to develop a lower noise level T/C through understanding the mechanism of the noise source of T/C.

  • Stall inception means the phenomena of rotating stall initiation. The initiation mechanism of rotating stall, the existence of stall precursor, the behavior of stall precursor, stall warning scheme and control scheme are the main interests in stall inception research. Compared to the studies on rotating stall which has long history, the stall inception has been studied for about recent 20 years. After the first discovery of stall precursor in about 20 years ago, many studies were reported on stall inception phenomena. The inception pattern of 'mode' and 'spike' were found, and some of its characteristics are known. And now the stall inception has become one of the fascinating fields in turbomachinery. The development stall control scheme which apply the reliable stall warning scheme will play a great role in future compressor and aeroengine. This paper reviews the results and analysis methods on stall inception studies.

  • An expansion device plays an important role in optimizing the heat pumps by controlling refrigerant flow and balancing the system pressures. Conventional expansion devices are being gradually replaced with electronic expansion valves due to increasing focus on comfort, energy conservation, and application of a variable speed compressor. In addition, the amount of refrigerant charge in a heat pump is another primary parameter influencing system performance. In this study, the flow characteristics of the expansion devices are analyzed, and the effects of refrigerant charge amount on the performance of the heat pump and the variation of compressor speed are investigated at various operating conditions. Mass flow rate through capillary tube, short tube orifice, and EEV was strongly dependent on the upstream pressure and subcooling. The heat pump system is very sensitive with a variation of refrigerant charge amount. The performance of it can be optimized by adjusting the flow rate through expansion device to maintain a constant superheat at all test conditions.

  • General Mechanical Structures have various and complex vibration transmission paths. In order to identify the mechanism of vibration transmission. The correct estimation of exciation forces and the exact modeling of transmission paths are required. In this paper, vector synthesis technique is employed to identify the characteristics of vibration input and it's transmission to body structure for the mounting system of a compressor in a refrigerator. Vibration reduction efficiency of each transmission path is evaluated by comparing individual vector components obtained before and after the paths from experimental research. The degree of effect is used to estimate the contribution of vibration input components to total output. And this paper presents a new technique based on simulation studies using vector synthesis dragram, by which the effects of change of the magnitude and phase of transmission paths can be predicted.

  • Compressor is a major noise source of air-conditioner. Especially, its low frequency band noise below 1000Hz is very important because it will not be attenuated by passing through the cover panel and heat exchanger in air-conditioner. The factors affecting the low frequency band noise are studied by geometric similarity along with several experiments, and the low frequency noise is closely related with the discharge holes of muffler as well as the cavity of lower shell. The low frequency band noise is significantly reduced by proposed designs.

  • This paper discusses study of sensorless control of a variable speed switched reluctance motor (SRM) for electric AC compressors on electrical vehicles. A typical SRM drive requires a position sensor such as an encoder or hall sensor to measure the angular rotor position. However, harsh environment in electrical AC compressors for electric vehicles makes it difficult to use the position sensor in their motor drive system. Therefore, a sensorless control scheme for electric compressor motors utilizing magnetic characteristics of SRM with respect to position angle and phase current is proposed. The overall variable speed SRM drive with position sensorless control scheme has been modeled using Matlab/Simulink software and closed loop current control simulation is presented to validate the proposed sensorless drive control.
