  • The authors report a case of symptomatic epidural gas accumulation 2 weeks after the multi-level lumbar surgery, causing postoperative recurrent radiculopathy. The accumulation of epidural gas compressing the dural sac and nerve root was demonstrated by CT and MRI at the distant two levels, L3-4 and L5-S1, where vacuum in disc space was observed preoperatively and both laminectomy and discectomy had been done. However, postoperative air was not identified at L4-5 level where only laminectomy had been done in same surgical field, which suggested the relationship between postoperative epidural gas and the manipulation of disc structure. Conservative treatment and needle aspiration was performed, but not effective to relieve patient's symptoms. The patient underwent revision surgery to remove the gaseous cyst. Her leg pain was improved after the second operation.

  • Subclavian artery aneurysms are quite rare and they are known to be as only 1% of all peripheral aneurysms. Atherosclerotic disease is the most common cause of subclavian artery aneurysms. These aneurysms can cause rupture, thrombosis, embolisms or symptoms by local compression. Surgical operations are generally performed as treatment. We report here on a case of successful surgical treatment for a right proximal subcalvian artery aneurysm, and the surgery was peformed via the medical exclusion method.

  • Our objective of this study was to reduce radio frequency coil (RF) control time at 3 T MRI systems. A compressed method is proposed with a convex optimization and pseudo-inverse method in multi-channel RF coils. After applying the proposed methods, fields are homogenized with less field data. Even with 80% compression, the fields are well homogenized and localized, indicating that mapping requires only 20% of the original data. Detailed values are compared between each compressed result in and outside the region of interest at 3 T.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the liquefaction behaviour and predict deviator stress with matric suction, of unsaturated silty sand. The unsaturated soil tests were conducted using a modified triaxial cell and specimens were prepared using the moisture tamping method. The axis translation technique was used to create the desired matric suctions in the specimen. Undrained triaxial compression tests were carried out at matric suction of 0, 2, 5, 10 and 25 kPa. The specimens were sheared to axial strains of about 20% to obtain steady state conditions. The results showed that liquefaction of silty sand only occurs at matric suction of 0 kPa and 2 kPa. The results also show that at matric suctions of 5, 10 and 25 kPa, the resistance to liquefaction increases. As the suction increases, the undrained effective stress path approached the drained stress path. Also, the predicted and measured maximum deviator stress for unsaturated soils using the effective stress concept showed good agreement as matric suction increases. The deviator stress increase is nonlinear as matric suction increases.

  • In this paper, we propose a fast and low-complexity Motion Estimation (ME) algorithm for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). Motion estimation occupies 77~81% of the amount of computation in HEVC. After all, the main key of codec implementation is to find a fast and low-complexity motion estimation algorithm and architecture. The proposed algorithm uses only 1% of the amount of operations compared to full search algorithm while maintaining compression performance with slight loss of 0.6% (BDBR).

  • Tubular markers for road safety facilities are used to lead the driver's sight line and separate the lanes on the road. Such tubular markers are usually installed on the road and frequently hit by vehicles, they are accordingly requested to assure the product durability. The traditional evaluation method of tubular markers include only quality tests of the material properties. However, most of consuming agencies in charge of road management at fields have proposed problems on long-term performance of the products hit by vehicles under various weather conditions. Therefore, the objectives of this study are to develop the reliability test methods and equipments to simulate the product failures of tubular markers due to vehicle collision and wheel compression and the delamination and discoloration of reflection sheets attached on the surface of the products under high and low temperatures.

  • This 51-year-old man suffered from paraparesis of 1-week history. On preoperative images, spinal cord compression by infiltrative vertebral mass was shown at T3 and T4 level. Several months earlier, he underwent surgical resection of left 2nd to 4th ribs, due to painful growing chest wall mass, which was proved to be hepatocellular carcinoma. All available diagnostic procedure failed to uncover origin of malignancy. Operation was followed by adjuvant irradiation and chemotherapy to the vertebral mass, however he only to die in 3 months after operation. This is an extremely rare case of ectopic hepatocellular carcinoma at thoracic vertebrae which showed very aggressive clinical course. Possible pathogenic process is presented and discussed.

  • In fractral decoding procedure, the reconstructed image is obtained by iteratively applying the contractive transform to an arbitrary initial image. But this method is not suitable for the fast decoding because convergence speed depends on the selection of initial image. Therefore, the initial image to achieve fast decoding should be selected. In this paper, we propose an initial image estimation that can be applied to various decoding methods. The initial image similar to the original image is estimated by using only the compressed data so that the proposed method does not affect the compression ratio. From the simulation, the PSNR of the proposed initial image is 6dB higher han that of ones iterated output image of conventional decoding with Babaraimage. Computations in addition and multiplication are reduced about 96%. On the other hands, if we apply the proposed initial image to other decoding algorithms, the faster convergence speed is expected.

  • The dynamic mechanical behavior of silicone rubber reinforced with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been investigated in this study. The MWCNT-reinforced nanocomposites are tested in compression mode through dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Multiple effects including MWCNT loading, testing frequency, dynamic strain amplitude, and pre-strain level are taken into consideration. Results show that, by adding 5 wt% of MWCNTs, the dynamic stiffness and damping coefficient of the silicone rubber are significantly enhanced. It is further observed that the dynamic mechanical properties of the nanocomposites are sensitive to dynamic strain amplitude but only slightly affected by pre-strains.
