Performance Characteristics of Hypersonic External Compression Inlet Using Isentropic Compression Surface (등엔트로피 압축면을 이용한 극초음속 외부 압축형 흡입구 성능 특성)

  • Most air-breathing aircraft operated in the hypersonic region are equipped with a scramjet engine. In a scramjet engine, a shock wave generated at an inlet acts as a compressor for a general gas turbine engine instead, so total pressure loss caused by the shock wave is considered very important. In this study, to minimize total pressure loss, a method of designing an external compression inlet using isentropic compression surface was proposed, and an external compression inlet with 3-deflection angles and Busemann inlet were designed under the same conditions. After that, through computational analysis, the performance characteristics at off-design conditions were compared. Each inlet shape was truncated according to the length of the 3-ramp external compression inlet, and the boundary layer correction was performed. The isentropic external compression inlet showed superior performance at the design point, but under the off-design conditions, its performance was degraded compared to the 3-ramp external compression inlet.

  • This paper presents a study of buckling of the multi-vaulted cylindrical shell ("Aster"), under an axial compression alone or combined with an external pressure. This shell which was presented in a recent paper is a self-stiffened structure having a satisfactory behaviour and a higher buckling strength under external pressure than a circular cylindrical shell with the same dimensions. The results of this study emphasize the interest of the behaviour of the "Aster" shell under two other types of loading, revealing an acceptable level of strength which is favorable for an expansion of its use in other areas.

  • Engine cycle simulation using a two-zone model was performed to investigate the effect of the engine parameters on NO and soot emissions in a DI diesel engine. The present model was validated against measurements in terms of cylinder pressure, BMEP, NO emission data with a 2902cc turbocharger/intercooler DI diesel engine. Calculations were made for a wide range of the engine parameters, such as injection timing, ignition delay, Intake air pressure, inlet air temperature, compression ratio, EGR. This parametric study indicated that NO and soot emissions were effectively decreased by increasing intake air pressure, decreasing inlet air temperature and increasing compression ratio. By retarding injection timing, increasing ignition delay and applying EGR. NO emission was effectively reduced, but the soot emission was increased.

  • Settlement in the Shallow Foundation are presented. Various practical methods to calculate immediate settlement, consolidation settlement, and secondary compression of the compressive soils under the shallow foundation are summerized. Especially the critical depth for settlement calculation, the contact pressure, the allowable settlement of the shallow foundation are recommended.

An Experimental Study on the Pumping Performance of Molecular Drag Pumps

  • The pumping performance of molecular drag pumps (MDP) has been investigated experimentally. The exporimented MDPs are a disk-type drag pump (DTDP), helical-type drag pump(HTDP) and compound drag pump (CDP), respectively In the case of the DTDP, spiral channels of a rotor are cut on both upper surface and lower surface of a rotating disk, and the corresponding stator is a planar disk. In the case of the HTDP, the rotor has six rectangular grooves. The CDP consists with the DTDP, at lower part, and with the HTDP, at upper part. The experiments are performed in the outlet pressure range of $0.2{\sim}533Pa$. The inlet pressure and compression ratio are measured under the various conditions of outlet pressure and throughputs, and nitrogen is used for the test gas. At the outlet pressure of 0.2Pa, the ultimate pressure has been reached to $1.0{\times}10^{-2}Pa$ for the HTDP, $1.3{\times}10^{-4}Pa$ for the DTDP, and $3.6{\times}10^{-5}Pa$ for the CDP. The maximum compression ratio of the CDP is much higher than those of the DTDP or HTDP. Consequently, the ultimate pressure of the CDP is the lowest one.

  • As a high-speed train enters a tunnel, a compression wave is generated ahead of it due to the piston action of train. The compression waves propagate along the tunnel and reflect at the exit of tunnel. A complex wave phenomenon appears in the tunnel, because of the successive reflections of the pressure waves at the exit and entrance of tunnel. The pressure waves give rise to large pressure transients which impose the fluctuating loads on the running train. It is highly needed that the pressure transients should be predicted to design the train body and to improve the comfortableness of the passengers in the train. In the present study, the pressure transients were calculated numerically for a wide range of train speed and compared with the previous tunnel tests. The calculation results agreed with ones of the tunnel tests, and the mechanism of pressure transients was made clear.

The Effect of Curvature Radius and Material of Diaphragm on the Valve Opening Time in Diaphragm Type S/R Valve (S/R 밸브에서 격막의 곡률반경과 재료가 밸브 개구시간에 미치는 영향)

  • When the pressure at the weak spot established at a certain part of a high pressure vessel or piping system exceeds a design pressure, this weak spot is burst, and the pressurized gas emitted through the weak spot will cause a compression wave system. In this connection, in the present study, an experimental study by using a conventional shock tube facility is performed to estimate the effects of the material of diaphragm, curvature radius and thickness of materials on the valve opening time in diaphragm. Pressure sensor having 500kHz in natural frequency is installed at 35mm downstream of the rupture diaphragm to measure the static pressure history of propagating and being accumulated compression wave. 4 kinds of materials are used as diaphragm that is aluminium, copper, stainless steel and zinc. The diaphragm radii of curvature R are ${\infty}$, 120mm and 60, respectively. And the depth for $90^{\circ}$ groove is 0.04mm. It is found that the smaller the tensile strength and elongation of the rupture diaphragm is, the smaller the radius of curvature of the rupture diaphragm is, and for the same conditions the thinner the thickness of the rupture diaphragm is, the shorter the valve opening time becomes. Also, the tensile strength, elongation and the radius of curvature of the rupture diaphragm for the same conditions are smaller, the maximum pressure rise caused by the coalescences of the compression wave is smaller. Finally the pressure ratio is higher, the valve opening time is shortened and gradient of pressure increment is more steepen.

Effect of Tunnel Entrance Shape of High Speed Train on Aerodynamic Characteristics and Entry Compression Wave (고속전철의 터널입구 형상이 공력특성 및 터널입구 압축파에 미치는 영향)

  • The work presented in this paper concerns the aerodynamic characteristics and compression wave generated in a tunnel when a high speed train enters it. A large number of solutions have been proposed to reduce the amplitude of the pressure gradient in tunnels and some of the most efficient solutions consist of (a) addition ofa blind hood, (b) addition of inclined part at the entrance, and (c) holes in the ceiling of the tunnel. These are numerically studied by using the three-dimensional unsteady compressible Euler equation solver with ALE, CFD code, based on FEM method. Computational results showed that the smaller inclined angle leads to the lower pressure gradient of compression wave front. This study indicated that the most efficient slant angle is in the range from $30^{\circ}$ to $50^{\circ}$. The maximum pressure gradient is reduced by $26.81\%$ for the inclined angle of $30^{\circ}$ as compared to vertical entry. Results also showed that maximum pressure gradient can be reduced by $15.94\%$ in blind hood entry as compared to $30^{\circ}$ inclined tunnel entry. Furthermore, the present analysis showed that inclined slant angle has little effect on aerodynamic drag. Comparison of the pressure gradient between the inclined tunnel hood and the vertical entry with air vent holes indicated that the optimum inclined tunnel hood is much more effective way in reducing pressure gradient and increasing the pressure rise time.

The Effect of Abdominal-Compression Belt on Balance Ability with One Leg Standing

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of abdominal-compression belt in one leg standing on balance in normal adult. Background: With the effects of increased intra-abdominal pressure, the abdominal-compression belt is contributing to a static balance control. However, specific study is still insufficient. Method: Forty subjects were randomly allocated to two groups: control(n=20) and experimental group(n=20), respectively. The experimental group used an abdominal-compression belt, whereas the control group did not that. All subjects were educated using pressure biofeedback unit and ultrasound imaging for exact application by abdominal-compression belt. Main outcome measurement was used a general stability index, fourier harmony index, weight distribution index, and fall index in tetrax balance system. Results: Experimental group improved significantly on general stability, only 2 factors(eyes closed with head turned forward and eyes closed with head turned backward) among fourier harmony index, and fall index, However, weight distribution index did not revealed significant difference. Conclusion: The findings suggest that application of abdominal-compression belt could be effective on improving balance ability in one leg standing of normal adults. Application: The results of the abdominal-compression belt might help to control balance in workers.
