  • In this paper, we propose a new embedded video compression scheme which uses three-dimensional rate-distortion optimization based block coder. After the proposed scheme removes temporal redundancy by applying the motion compensated temporal filtering(MCTF) on input video frames, two dimensional discrete wavelet transform is applied on video frames to remove spatial redundancy. The three-dimensional wavelet coefficients generated in this way are sorted according to their expected rate-distortion slope and encoded by using the three-dimensional block partition coding method. The proposed scheme also uses both the effective color video coding method which maintains embedded features, and the efficient bit-rate control method. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme not only produces embedded bit-streams, but also outperforms existing video compression schemes.

  • A motion compression method by min s-norm composite fuzzy relational equations (dual-MCF) is proposed, where a motion sequence is divided into intra-pictures (I-pictures) and predictive-pictures (P-pictures). The I-pictures and the P-pictures are compressed by using uniform coders and non-uniform coders, respectively. A design method of non-uniform coders is proposed to perform an efficient compression and reconstruction of the P-pictures, based on the dual overlap level of fuzzy sets and a fuzzy equalization. An experiment using 10 P-pictures confirms that the root means square errors of the proposed method is decreased to 82.9% of that of the uniform coders, under the condition that the compression rate is 0.0055. An experiment of motion compression and reconstruction is also presented to confirm the effectiveness of the dual-MCF based on the non-uniform coders.

  • An experimental study was performed to explore characteristics of combustion and exhaust emissions in the compression ignition engine of RCCI (reactivity controlled compression ignition) using diesel-gasoline dual fuel. A dual-fuel reactivity controlled compression ignition concepts is demonstrated as a promising method to achieve high thermal efficiency and low emissions. For investigating combustion characteristics, engine experiments were performed in a light-duty diesel engine over a range of SOIs (start of injection) and gasoline percents. The experimental results showed that cases of diesel-gasoline dual fuel combustion is capable of operating over a middle range of engine loads with lower levels of NOx and soot, acceptable pressure rise rate, low ISFC (indicated specific fuel consumption), and high indicated thermal efficiency.

  • PMMA has been extensively adopted in Nano Imprint Lithography(NIL). PMMA nano-structures experience severe mechanical load and deformation during NIL process, and understanding its mechanical behavior is very important in designing and optimizing NIL process. One of the most promising techniques for characterizing the mechanical behavior of nano structures is nano pillar compression test. In this study, the mechanical behaviors of PMMA pillars during compression test are analyzed using Molecular Dynamics. Two methods for simulation of PMMA nano pillars are proposed. The stress-strain relationship of nano-scale PMMA structure is obtained based on CVFF(Covalent Valence Force Fields) potential and the dependency of the applied strain rate on the stress-strain relationship is analyzed. The obtained stress-strain relationships can be useful in simulating nano-scale PMMA structures using Finite Element Method(FEM) and understanding the experimental results obtained by compression test of PMMA nano pillars.

  • To evaluate transport-induced cladding embrittlement after interim-dry storage, ring compression tests were carried out at room temperature(RT) and 135 ℃. The ring compression test specimens were prepared by simulating the interim-dry storage conditions that include four peak cladding temperatures of 250, 300, 350 and 400 ℃, two tensile hoop stresses of 80 and 100 MPa, two hydrogen contents of 250 and 500 wt.ppm-H and a cooling rate of 0.3 ℃/min. Radial hydride fractions of the ring specimens vary depending on those interim-dry storage conditions. The RT compression tests generated lower offset strains than the 135 ℃ ones. In addition, the RT and 135 ℃ compression tests indicate that a higher peak cladding temperature, a higher tensile hoop stress and the lower hydrogen content generated a lower offset strain. Based on the embrittlement criterion of 2.0% offset strain, an allowable peak temperature during the interim-dry storage may be proposed to be less than 350 ℃ under the tensile hoop stress of 80 MPa at the terminal cool-down temperature of 135 ℃.

  • Since image data has large data amount, proper image compression is necessary to transmit and store the data efficiently. Image compression brings about bit rate reduction but results in some artifacts. This artifacts are blocking artifacts, mosquito noise, which are observed in DCT based compression image, and ringing artifacts, which is perceived around the edges in wavelet based compression image. In this paper, we propose directional postprocessing technique which improved the decoded image quality using the fact that human vision is sensible to ringing artifacts around the edges of image. First we detect the edge direction in each block. Next we perform directional postprocessing according to detected edge direction. Proposed method is that the edge direction is block. Next performed directional postprocessing according to detected edge direction. If the correlation coefficients are equivalent to each directions, postprocessing is not performed. So, time of the postproces ing brings about shorten.

  • In this paper, we present a new approach for the progressive compression of three-dimensional (3D) mesh geometry using redundant frame dictionaries and sparse approximation techniques. We construct the proposed frames from redundant linear combinations of the eigenvectors of a combinatorial mesh Laplacian matrix. We achieve a sparse synthesis of the mesh geometry by selecting atoms from a frame using matching pursuit. Experimental results show that the resulting rate-distortion performance compares favorably with other progressive mesh compression algorithms in the same category, even when a very simple, sub-optimal encoding strategy is used for the transmitted data. The proposed frames also have the desirable property of being able to be applied directly to a manifold mesh having arbitrary topology and connectivity types; thus, no initial remeshing is required and the original mesh connectivity is preserved.

  • SMC(Sheet Molding Compound), a thermoset composite material which consists of unsaturated polyester resin, fiberglass strands, fillers, and various chemical additives for curing agent, has been widely used in fabrication of structural components. The mechanical properties of molded SMS parts are strongly dependent on material flow results during compression molding process, while such flow in molds is affected by material characteristics. For numerical simulation of SMC molding process, estimation of material property of SMC must be accomplished. In this study, flow resistance of SMC was estimated through a simple compression test using a lubricant with grease oil under the constant strain rate condition at various temperatures and the result was compared with other material data available in the literature. The accuracy of the experimentally determined flow resistance was tested by finite element analyses of compression molding of SMC. Simulation results were compared with experimental results under the plane strain condition.

  • This letter proposes a new near-lossless image compression method with only one line buffer cost for a digital camera with Bayer format image. For such format data, it can provide a low average compression rate (4.24bits/pixel) with high-image quality (larger than 46.37dB where the error of every pixel is less than two). The experimental results show that the near-lossless compression method has better performance than JPEG-LS (lossless) with ${\delta}$ = 2 for a Bayer format image.

  • Compression index is one of the important characteristic numbers in soft soil engineering. Since 1940's, many researchers have suggested various practical solutions to define the compression index of clay using other soil properties. But, these results are only can give us an outline of soft soil behavior. In this study, the relationships between pore water pressure dissipation test results and compression index were suggested using comparison results of both tests. This relationships are based on basic concept of consolidation phenomena, essential difference between pore water pressure dissipation test and consolidation test, and disagreements between theoretical time factor and real time factor. To identify proportional factor of proposed equation, Geotechnical investigation results of Kwang-Yang(KY) site and Busan New Port(BN) site were used. The proportional factor was 0.0031 from 20 to 50% of consolidation rate where correlation parameter($R^2$) is 0.9051.
