  • In general, a single gas flow through a converging nozzle is choked when the pressure communications between the downstream and upstream flowfields are broken by the sonic condition of Mach number, M=1. A similar phenomenon may occur In two streams of different stagnation properties flowing side by side in a converging nozzle. In this case, the limiting condition of M=1 for flow choking is no longer applied to such a compound compressible flow. The compound choking phenomenon can be explained by means of a compound sound wave at the nozzle exit. In order to detail the flow characteristics involved in such a compound choking of the two streams, the two-dimensional, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations have been solved using a fully implicit finite volume method and compared with the results of the one-dimensional theoretical analysis. The computational and theoretical results show that the compound sound wave can reasonably explain the compound choking phenomenon of the two streams in the convergent flow channel.

  • In the present article, we investigate numerically turbulent flow of air through compound rectangular channels. Large eddy simulation(LES) is employed for unsteady turbulence modeling. LES gives better predictions for the axial mean velocity distribution than those of other turbulent models. Strong large-scale quasi-periodic flow oscillations are observed in most of the geometries investigated. Such large-scale flow oscillations in compound rectangular channels are similar to the quasi-periodic flow pulsation through the gaps between fuel rod bundle in nuclear reactor. It exists in any longitudinal connecting gap between two flow channels. The frequency of this flow oscillation is determined by the geometry of the gap. The large scale cross motions through the rectangular compound channels induce significant heat transfer enhancement of the compound channel flow.

  • Compound choking frequently occurs at a minimum area of the flow passage, where two or more streams which have different stagnation properties are merged. This phenomenon is especially important in that the flow choking may not be given by Mach number, M=1 at the nozzle throat. In order to obtain a detailed understanding of the flow characteristics involved in the compound flow choking, the two-dimensional, compressible, Wavier-Stokes equations are solved using a fully implicit finite volume method and the predicted solutions are compared with the results of the one-dimensional theoretical analysis. Stagnation pressure and temperature of each stream are changed to investigate the effects on the compound choking. The results show that stagnation pressures of each stream affect Mach number and static pressure distributions downstream of the exit of the convergent nozzle. However, the flow characteristics of the compound choking are not significantly dependent on the total temperature ratio.

  • An experiment has been conducted on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of film coolant injected from a row of five holes with compound angle orientations of 35$^{\circ}$ inclination angle and 45$^{\circ}$ orientation angle. The Reynolds number based on the mainstream velocity and injection hole diameter 3.58${\times}$10$^4$. Three-dimensional velocity, film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient data are presented at three different mass flux ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0. Flow entrainment has been found between the vortices generated by adjacent injectants. The injectant with compound angle orientation entrains not only the mainstream boundary layer flow but also the adjacent injectant. Because of the flow entrainment, the injectant. With compound angle orientation is characterized by a single vortex while two bound vortices are usually observed in the case of simple angle injection. The strength of the secondary flow depends strongly on the mass flux ratio, which shows significant influence on the film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient.

  • Compound flow by confluence of two parallel flows through a convergent channel and its choking phenomenon are calculated by one-dimensional isentropic model and completely mixing model. Optical observations and pressure measurements for subsonic/subsonic compound flows are carried out and compared with the results of one-dimensional calculations. As a result, it is found that inlet conditions of one flow influence the behavior of the other flow as well as the choking condition and present experimental data agree well with the results of one-dimensional calculations.

  • This study investigated compound open channel flow using OpenFOAM Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Large eddy simulations were carried out by solving the filtered continuity and momentum equations numerically. One equation LES and non-uniform grid were applied to capture the anisotropic turbulence and secondary flow near the wall. The results of large eddy simulations of turbulent flow in a compound open channel with deep and shallow flood plain depths are presented. These LESs are validated with experimental data, resulting in a good agreement between measured and calculated data. The role of anisotropic turbulence in generating secondary currents is illustrated.

  • In this study, the design of compound smart materials hydraulic pump that can be applied to a small-medium size UAV having a limited space envelope and weight has been conducted. Compound Smart Material Pump(CSMP) proposed in this paper is composed of a pressurize pump and a flow pump for supplying the high pressure and fluid displacement to overcome the disadvantages of the piezoelectric actuator which has a small strain. Though this compound smart material pump has been designed as small size and lightweight as possible, it can sequentially supply the sufficient large flow rate and pressure required for the brake operation. For the design of CSMP, about 2,700 kg (6,000 lb) class fixed wing manned aircraft was selected. Based on the established requirements, the design of the CSMP have been done by strength, vibration, and fluid flow analysis.

  • Ginsenosides are among the most well-known traditional herbal medicines frequently used for the treatment of cardiovascular symptoms in South Korea. The anti-ischemic effects of compound K (CK), a metabolite of ginsenoside Rb1, on ischemia-induced isolated rat hearts were investigated through the analyses of the changes in the hemodynamics (blood pressure, aortic flow, coronary flow, and cardiac output) and the measurement of the infarct region. The subjects in this study were divided into four groups: the normal control, the CK-alone group, the ischemia-induced group without any treatment, and the ischemia-induced group treated with CK. No significant differences in perfusion pressure, aortic flow, coronary flow, and cardiac output were found between the groups before ischemia was induced. The oxygen and buffer supply was stopped for 30 min to induce ischemia 60 min after reperfusion in the isolated rat hearts, and the CK was administered 5 min before ischemia induction. The CK treatment significantly prevented decreases in perfusion pressure, aortic flow, coronary flow, and cardiac output under ischemic conditions. In addition, the hemodynamics (except for the heart rate) of the group treated with CK significantly recovered 60 min after reperfusion, unlike in the control group. CK significantly limited the infarct. These results suggest that CK treatment has distinct anti-ischemic effects in an exvivo model of an ischemia-reperfusion-induced rat heart.

  • Our objective is to increase the flowability of Polypropylene(PP) compounds and achieve flow mark free surface in injection molded specimen. We have investigated flowabilities of PP compounds which were composed of PP, rubber, talc, and trace amount of additives. Flowability measurement was performed with four types PPs of which molecular weight distributions(MWD) and melt indexes(MI) were different. Rheological properties of the PP compounding materials, such as spiral flow(SF) length, MI, and shear viscosity, were evaluated. When PP with the broad MWD was used, there were remarkable cases where the spiral flow length of low MI PP compound was longer than that of higher MI PP compound. The PP compound having low MI but broad MWD PP has more flowability than the compound with only high MI.
