Ambient ionization can be achieved by generating an electrospray directly from plant tissue ("leaf spray"). The resulting mass spectra are characteristic of ionizable phytochemicals in the plant material. By subtracting the leaf spray spectra recorded from the petals of two hibiscus species H. moscheutos and H. syriacus one gains rapid access to the metabolites that differ most in the two petals. One such compound was identified as the sambubioside of quercitin (or delphinidin) while others are known flavones. Major interest centered on a $C_{19}H_{29}NO_5$ compound that occurs only in the large H. moscheutos bloom. Attempts were made to characterize this compound by mass spectrometry alone as a test of such an approach. This showed that the compound is an alkaloid, assigned to the polyhydroxylated pyrrolidine class, and bound via a $C_3$ hydrocarbon unit to a monoterpene.

In this work, a method is described to investigate the progressive and compound process in the coining and piercing operation for given conditions and parameters, using the FEM simulation and model experiment. The effect of the die shape on the compound process is established, and the die shape depends on the position of coining die and the width of the part coined. It is found that Progressive process is better than compound process, since material's filling into the die is not completed and the higher stress acts on the edge of the punch according to width being increased.

This study is performed to examine the physical and mechanical properties of eco-concrete using soil, natural coarse aggregate, excellent soil compound and polypropylene fiber. The test result shows that mass loss ratio is decreased with increasing the content of coarse aggregate and excellent soil compound. The compressive and flexural strengths are increased with increasing the content of coarse aggregate, excellent soil compound and polypropylene fiber. The coefficient of permeability is decreased with increasing the content of coarse aggregate and excellent soil compound, but it is increased in 0.2% polypropylene fiber content. The lowest coefficient of permeability is showed in $5.066\times 10^{-9}$cm/s. These eco-concrete can be used for farm road.
In order to search the new serotonin bioisoster, 2-(5,6-dimethoxy-l-indenyl)ethyl amine(1) was synthesized. 3,4-Dimethoxybenzaldehyde, as starting material, was condensed with malonic acid in the presence of pyridine and piperidine to form 3,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid(2). Compound 2 was performed catalytic hydrogenation with 10% Pd-C to give propanoic acid derivative 3, which was cyclized by Friedel-Crafts acylation to afford 5,6-dimethoxyindan-l-one(4). Compound 4 was reduced with NaBH$_4$ in ethanol to obtain l-indanol 5, and it was dehydrated to give 5,6-dimethoxy-l-indene(6). This compound was lithiated with 2.5M n-butyllithium and reacted with 1,2-dibromoethane to give 2-(5,6-dimethoxy-l-indenyl)ethyl bromide(7), and which was treated with anhydrous ammonia to synthesize compound 1.

Antifungal and insecticidal activity of Korean traditional medicinal plants was carried out to develop natural material for the development of organic cultural heritage conservation. As a result, Phellodendron amurense fruit was finally selected as a candidate of antifungal and insecticidal natural material. An novel active compound was purified from the ethylacetate fraction of Phellodendron amurense fruits using silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and PTLC. The compound was obtained as yellow oil form; UV ${\lambda}_{max}$(MeOH): 260 nm. The chemical structure of novel compound was determined as (4'-ethyl-2'-methylfuranyl)-6-methoxy-7-methylnona-2E,4E,6Z,8E-tetraenoic acid on the basis of various NMR experiments including $^1H$- and $^{13}C$-NMR, HMQC, HMBC and ESI-mass spectrum.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find a reasonable solution to a current status of drug classification between the drugs of western conventional (allopathic) medicine and Korean medicine. A clear and distinct concept on the drugs of allopathic medicine and Korean medicine based on reasonable concepts and broad consensus is a pressing issue in Korea, and will facilitate the development of herbal medicinal products and pharmaceutical industry. Methods : Considering the issue of drug classification from domestic and international regulations, we reviewed the current Drug Law of Korea and China, Guidance for Industry, Botanical Drug Products of USA, Directive 2004/24/EC of the European parliament and of the council. Results : In Korea, the drug classification of allopathic medicine and Korean medicine is quite vague even though differential licensure system is enforced for the clinicians of allopathic medicine and Korean medicine field. According to the definition in the Drug Law, the scope of Korean medicine drug is so broad that even a drug made of single-compound material, as well as herbal extract of crude mixture, is regarded as a drug of Korean medicine, as long as the material may be separated from medicinal herbs, animal tissues, or mineral resources. Only new compound not found in natural resources are outside of the scope of Korean medicine drug. In USA and EU, medicinal products manufactured from herbs are approved by separate regulations for the herbs with special waivers. In China, the category of new medicine and the definition of allopathic medicine and traditional chinese medicine are clearly specified and classified. Conclusions : As medicines are validated therapeutic materials for efficacy and toxicity, we suggest that generally the concept of conventional medicines is based on a single compound that has been synthesized and individually validated and that of Korean medicines is based on a compound extracted from natural materials or a complex of compounds that has been validated as a whole in its totality.

Recently, various phenolic acid phenethyl ureas (PAPUs) have been synthesized from phenolic acids by Curtius rearrangement for the development of more effective anti-oxidants. In this study, we examined the anti-tumor activity and cellular mechanism of the synthetic compound (E)-1-(3,4-dihydroxyphenethyl)-3-styrylurea (PAPU1) using melanoma B16/F10 and M-3 cells. Results showed that PAPU1 inhibited the cell proliferation and viability, but did not induce cytotoxic effects on primary cultured fibroblasts. PAPU1 induced apoptotic cell death rather than necrosis in melanoma cells, a result clearly proven by the shift of cells into sub-$G_1$ phase of the cell cycle and by the substantial increase in cells positively stained with TUNEL or Annexin V. Collectively, this study revealed that PAPU1 induced apoptosis in a caspase-dependent manner, suggesting a potential role as a cancer chemopreventive agent for melanoma cells.

Compound K (20-O-β-(D-glucopyranosyl)-20(S)-protopanaxadiol) is an active ingredient of ginsenosides. Compound K has been known to produce from biotransformation by β-glucosidase action of human intestinal microbes after oral admistration of ginseng. We have investigated the cytotoxicity of compound K obtained from bio-converted ginseng extract. As a result, compound K showed no significant cytotoxicity in the concentration of 0.001 to 1 ㎍/mL and inhibited the production of TNF-α, MCP-1, IL-6 and NO in RAW 264.7 cells induced by LPS inflamation. In the same concentration, HaCaT cells induced by inflammation with TNF-α and IFN-γ decreased IL-8 production due to compound K treatment. In the brine shrimp lethality assay, the LC50 of compound K was 0.37 mg/mL indicating some toxicity, but the bioconverted product containing 35% compound K showed relatively low toxicity with an LC50 of 0.87 mg/mL. These results suggest that the compound K enriched extract is a potential functional material for acne relief cosmetic products.
Coliphages isolated from Han-River from September 1980 to August 1981 were classified by morphological and physiological characteristics. Effects of soil metrial on the fate of coliphage in nature were investigated. 1. The correlation coefficient between coliphage and E.coli which was host of coliphages in nature was 0.7173 (p=0.004). 2. Coliphage I isolated from Han-River of which DNA molecular weight was $27{\times}10^6$ daltons was identified as $T_1$ phage and coliphage II of which DNA molecular weight $72{\times}10^6$ daltons was classified as $T_5$ phage. 3. Soil material SW was composed of 63.65% silt and 21.92% clay. Clay was consisted of illite, kaolinite and chlorite evenly. Soil material J was composed of 68.92% silt and 11.67% clay. Clay consisted of smectite only. 4. Coliphage was absorbed to soil material J more than soil material SW, and $T_1$ coliphage was absorbed to soil material more than $T_5$ coliphage was. 5. The phage adsorption efficiency to soil material was enhanced at lower pH : the phage adsorption efficiency at pH 4 was 27 time higher than at pH 7. 6. Divalent $(Ca^{2+})\;and\;trivalention\;(Al^{3+})$ enhanced the phage adsorption efficiency to soil material from 4 to 39 and from 17 to 91 times higher than monovalent $ion(Na^+)$, respectively. 7. The concentration of organic compound was inversely related to the phage adsorption efficiency to soil. 8. Adsorption of phage onto soil material, and elution efficiency of elutants was in the order of D.D.W>tap water>river water>seawater. 9. The higher the concentration of organic compound was, the more were adsorbed phages to soil eluted. 10. Coliphages survived longer in sterile soil suspension than in nonsterile soil material suspension.
