  • Knowledge of the distribution and biodiversity of environmental bacteria and the ecosystem that influences them is crucial for predicting an ecosystem. However, bacterial culture methods can only analyze approximately 0.1% of the existing microorganisms, those that are readily cultured under laboratory conditions. By contrast, next-generation sequencing (NGS) has generally been known to obtain more diverse profiling of bacterial composition. We compared the bacterial communities using both a culture-dependent (MALDI-TOF) and culture-independent (NGS) methods. Environmental specimens were obtained from both freshwater and seawater. Water samples were also analyzed by both pyrosequencing and MiSeq sequencing, in order to select one NGS platform which could analyze comparatively more diverse microbiota. Bacterial distribution analyzed with MALDI-TOF showed no difference between the microbiota of freshwater and seawater, whereas the results analyzed with NGS distinguished between the two. The diversity indexes of MiSeq sequencing were higher than for Pyrosequencing. This indicated that MiSeq sequencing is capable of analyzing a comparatively wider diversity of bacteria. The genus of Flavobacterium and Planktophila were identified as being unique to freshwater, whereas EU801223 and OM43 were found in the seawater. Difference between the bacterial composition of the freshwater and seawater environments was identified by MiSeq sequencing analysis.

  • This paper is the third of several companion papers which compare the method of Air-Fuel ratio determination. In the previous works, Eltinge chart was expanded to arbitrary fuel composition as a reference exhaust composition. The compensation of unburned hydrocarbon in Eltinge chart and comparison of Spindt and Eltinge method were also discussed. In addition to Eltinge and Spindt's one, however, there are many methods which calculate Air-Fuel ratio from exhaust emission. Among these methods, carbon balance and oxygen balance are widely used in practice. In some applications, linear formula from statistical method is being used in the field due to its simplicity and convenience. In this paper, these various methods are evaluated and compared with Eltinge results and new linear formula is proposed for the gasoline fuel. The results show that the corrected carbon balance equation has excellent agreement with Eltinge and Spindt's one. On the other hands, the oxygen-balanced formula has a limitation according to the mixture state and AFR. For gasoline fuel, newly proposed linear equation has good compatibility with Eltinge and Spindt up to AFR 17.

  • The influence of three cooking methods (stewing, microwaving and Aluminium (Al) foil-baking) was evaluated on the content of intramuscular lipid and the composition of intramuscular fatty acids of Hyla rabbit. The percentage of intramuscular lipid in cooked-longissimus dorsi (LD) (dry weight %) were in the order mentioned below: microwaving > foil-baking > stewing. All treated samples showed decrease in the proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), whilst increase in the proportion of saturated (SFA) and n-6/n-3 value during processing. All of the cooked samples had the n-6/n-3 ratio within the recommended range (5-10). By the analysis of partial least squares regression (PLSR), the microwaving treatment was better to keep the stability of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), whilst the long-time Al foil-baking did the most serious damage to UFA, especially the PUFA. In addition, the heating method showed greater influence on the samples than the processing time. The shorter processing time was better to retain the intramuscular PUFA of Hyla rabbit, especially the LC-PUFAs (C20-22). Considering all the factors, microwaving showed the superiority in reserving the composition of intramuscular fatty acids of Hyla rabbit.

  • This study compared the nutritional composition and antioxidative activity of different parts of Taraxacum coreanum (aerial parts and roots) according to different drying methods (natural drying and freeze-drying). There were no significant differences in vitamin C content in roots depending on the drying methods. However, vitamin A (P<0.01), E (P<0.001) and C (P<0.001) content of aerial parts, and vitamin A (P<0.001) and E (P<0.05) content of roots were significantly higher after freeze-drying compared to natural drying. For organic acids, the oxalic acid content of the aerial parts and roots were the highest. The total polyphenol and total flavonoid content in extracts from the aerial parts (P<0.01) and roots (P<0.05) were significantly higher after freeze-drying compared to natural drying. In addition, the total polyphenol and flavonoid content, DPPH radical scavenging activity, and antioxidative index from the natural drying and freeze-drying of Taraxacum coreanum extracts were significantly higher in the aerial parts compared to the roots (P<0.05). These results suggest that the nutritional composition and antioxidative activity of Taraxacum coreanum are higher in the aerial parts compared to the roots, and higher after freeze-drying compared to natural drying. Therefore, the aerial parts of Taraxacum coreanum could be suggested as an antioxidative functional food source.

  • The efficiency of thesytem depends upon an accurate extraction capability of index terms in the system of information search or in that of automatic index. Therefore, extraction of accurate index terms is of utmost importance. This report presents the generation methods of composition noun for efficient index term extraction by using words of high frequency appearance, so that the right documents can be found during information search. For the sake of presentation of this method, index terms of composition noun shall be extracted by applying the rule of composition and disintegration to the nouns with high frequency of appearance in the documents, such as those with upper 30%∼40% of frequency ratio. In addition, for he purpose of effecting an inspection of validity in relation to a composition of high frequency nouns such as those with upper 30∼40% of frequency ratio as presented in this report, it proposes an adequate frquency ratio during noun composition. Based upon the proposed application, in this short documents with less than 300 syllables, low frequency omissions were noticed, when composed with nouns in the upper 30% of frequency ratio; whereas the documents with more than 30 syllables, when composed with nouns in he upper 40% of frequency ration, had a considerable reduction of low frequency omissions. Thus, total number of index terms has decreased to 57.7% of these existing and an accurate extraction of index terms with an 85.6% adequacy ratio became possible.

  • We investigated the functional characteristics of commercial wood charcoal in Korea and their application as functional raw materials. The areas of analysis were anatomical features, elementary composition, mineral composition, caloric values, anion and far-infrared ray emission, and moisture absorption capacity. Based on the analyses as above mentioned, it is considered that charcoal can be evaluated as functional raw material. In commercial wood charcoal in Korea, there were highly varied depending on manufacturing methods as black charcoal, white charcoal and mechanical charcoal and manufactures for elementary composition, mineral composition, anion emission, far infrared ray emission. Especially, black charcoal showed lower moisture absorption capacity than white charcoal and mechanical charcoal. For charcoal as functional raw material, selective usage are needed based on the analyses of anatomical features, elementary composition, mineral composition, caloric values, anion and far-infrared ray emission, and moisture absorption capacity. Specific charcoal making methods for improving specific functionality, required as functional raw material, are necessary in further research.

  • Based on the theory of local-world network, the composition self-similarity (CSS) of network traffic is presented for the first time in this paper for the study of DoS detection. We propose the concept of composition distribution graph and design the relative operations. The $(R/S)^d$ algorithm is designed for calculating the Hurst parameter. Based on composition distribution graph and Kullback Leibler (KL) divergence, we propose the composition self-similarity anomaly detection (CSSD) method for the detection of DoS attacks. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared to other entropy based anomaly detection methods, our method is more accurate and with higher sensitivity in the detection of DoS attacks.
