  • The objective of the present work is to characterize design parameters of solid propellant ignitor for composite, double base, and nitramine propellants using arc image furnace. Arc image furnace and fiber optics surface reflectometer were used to measure ignition delay time and reflected optical energy of several compositions of composite, double base and nitramine base rocket propellant at different pressure levels each other. The order of ignitability was double base > composite> nitramine propellants at initial pressure of over 75 psia. The highest ignition energy was needed to ignite nitramine propellant, however, the ignition delay time decreased abruptly as the pressure increased up to the range of $75{\sim}400$ psia. The absorbtion of radiation energy could be increased by the addition of small amount of opacifiers as carbon black, ZrC, WC and burning catalyst.

  • This paper presents analytical expressions for the determination of out of plane thermo-elastic properties for conventional laminated composite plates. The approach follows that commonly accepted for in-plane properties. Results over a variety of lay-ups reveals that it is poor assumption to use transverse tape lamina properties to represent out of plane laminate properties for laminates with more than 10% plies oriented off-axis($90^{\circ}$) from uniaxial or for laminates with angle plies of $15^{\circ}$ or greater.

  • Free-standing multilayer distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) porous silicon dielectric mirrors, prepared by electrochemical etching of crystalline silicon using square wave currents are treated with polystyrene to produce flexible, stable composite materials in which the porous silicon matrix is covered with caffeine-impregnated polystyrene. Optically encoded DBR PSi/polystyrene composite films retain the optical reflectivity. Optical characteristics of DBR PSi/polystyrene composite films are stable and robust for 2 hrs in a pH=7 aqueous buffer solution. The appearance of caffeine and change of DBR peak were simultaneously measured by UV-vis spectrometer and Ocean optics 2000 spectrometer, respectively.

  • The extensional stiffness in quasi-isotropic laminates is uniform in the radial direction, but the bending stiffness varies radially due to the stacking sequence. This paper addresses the directional dependency of the bending stiffness and its radial variation in three types of quasi-isotropic laminate reflectors consisting of unidirectional fiber composite materials (UDM) and randomly distributed composite materials (short fiber, RDM). The extensional stiffness and bending stiffness in optical reflectors using RDM are uniform, while the bending stiffness in those using UDM varies radially from 11% to 26%. Also, the stiffness sensitivity, such as the bend-twist or bend-torsion effect, due to the differences in the stiffness value in the composite, is large. These factors are problematic in the optical field requiring precision surfaces. Utilizing RDM might be one way to eliminate the presence of bending stiffness in composite mirror substrates.

  • The composite $MgF_2$-$TiO_2$ films are fabricated by codeposition from two independent sources. To improve optical and mechanical properties of films, the films are prepared by ion-assisted deposition. Chemical compositions, optical properties and microstructures of the composite films were investigated. The chemical composition rates of Ti:Mg of $MgF_2$-$TiO_2$ composite films are nonlinearly varied according to the relative deposition rate. It is found that the refractive indices of the composite films decrease with increasing $MgF_2$ contents and can be fitted quite well with Drude's formula and that the microstructures of the composite films changes from an amorphous to crystalline with increasing $MgF_2$ mole fractions.

  • We suggest a new method to determine the off-alignment error of the composite film, together with in-plane($R_{in}$) and out-of-plane retardation($R_{th}$) of the compensation film, simultaneously. The composite film consists of a polarizing film and a compensation film for improvement of viewing angle of a liquid crystal display. We regarded the compensation film as o-plate with its optic axis along an arbitrary direction. By using an extended Jones matrix method, the polarization characteristics of the composite film are examined. The calculated Fourier constants, ($\alpha$, $\beta$) curves of the composite film as the azimuth angle is varied at the incident angles of $0^{\circ}$ and $50^{\circ}$, respectively, are used to determine the axis misalignment, the tilt angle and the azimuth angle of the compensation film by adopting the linear regressional analysis technique. Since this method can be applied for the inspection of the composite film even after laminating the polarizing film and the compensation film, it will be useful for simplifying the manufacturing process and reducing the production cost of liquid crystal display panels.

  • We determined the feasibility of a fishing camera system using an optical fiber as the fishing line by testing a power-over-fiber (POF) module and multimode optical fiber. Operation of the remote camera module (RCM) without the battery was preferred because the removal of the charging or battery replacement section enabled a waterproof single-body type design. The average efficiency of the photovoltaic power converter (PPC) in the tested POF module was 32.6% at 820 nm, and thus, a high-power laser of at least 1.27 W was required for operating the developed RCM with an electrical dissipation of 413 mW. Because the optical fiber was wound on a fishing reel, composite loss composed of bending and tensile loss occurred. To mitigate the composite loss, we employed a simple holder that showed an improvement in the composite loss of 0.38 dB to 0.8 dB, which was considerably better than the losses without the holder.

  • Based on the transfer-matrix method (TMM), we report the characteristics of the interface states in one-dimensional (1D) composite structures consisting of two photonic crystals (PCs) composed of binary dielectrics A and B, with unit-cell configurations ABA (PC I) and BAB (PC II). The dependence of the interface states on the number of unit cells N and the boundary factor x are displayed. It is verified that the interface states are independent of N when the PC has inversion symmetry (x = 0.5). Besides, the composite structures support the formation of interface states independent of the PC symmetry, except that the positions of the interface states will be varied within the photonic band gaps. Moreover, the robustness of the interface states against nonuniformities is investigated by adding Gaussian noise to the layer thickness. In the case of inversion symmetry (x = 0.5) the most robust interface states are achieved, while for the other cases (x ≠ 0.5) interface states decay linearly with position inside the band gap. This work could shed light on the development of robust photonic devices.

  • This study was to calculate spot size, focus shift and optical focus by use of OSLO when 3 wavelength, ${\omega}{\upsilon}_1=0.588{\mu}$, ${\omega}{\upsilon}_2=0.486{\mu}$ and ${\omega}{\upsilon}_3=0.656{\mu}$ in composite lens optics system & ocular optical system were respectively here, Entrance Beam Radius(mm) 1 mm, Field angle(deg) 5.7296e-0.5 mm, Image Aperture 0.053055 mm, Exit Aperture 0.903711 mm, Reflective focal length 25.181544 mm, Petzval radius -19.21839 mm, n = 1.523. It was found that a range of spot size was 0.002 mm~0.07 mm when a range of back curvature radius was 1 mm~30 mm, and 0.0005 mm~0.002 mm when of it more than 50 mm. Focus shift, 50 mm a range 3 kinds of lens was small, and it saw that of all tendency was high up to 1 mm~15 mm and up to 25 mm beyond that limits, it was going down and then going up again, optical focus 100 mm lens was best and the value when optimization with this lens was $60{\pm}1mm$.
