PURPOSE. To analyze stress distribution in premolars restored with inlays or onlays using various materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three-dimensional maxillary premolar models of abutments were designed to include the following: 1) inlay with O cavity (O group), 2) inlay with MO cavity (MO group), 3) inlay with MOD cavity (MOD group), and 4) onlay (ONLAY group). A restoration of each inlay or onlay cavity was simulated using gold alloy, e.max ceramic, or composite resin for restoration. To simulate masticatory forces, a total of 140 N static axial force was applied onto the tooth at the occlusal contact areas. A finite element analysis was performed to predict the magnitude and pattern of stresses generated by occlusal loading. RESULTS. Maximum von Mises stress values generated in the abutment teeth of the ONLAY group were ranged from 26.1 to 26.8 MPa, which were significantly lower than those of inlay groups (O group: 260.3-260.7 MPa; MO group: 252.1-262.4 MPa; MOD group: 281.4-298.8 MPa). Maximum von Mises stresses generated with ceramic, gold, and composite restorations were 280.1, 269.9, and 286.6 MPa, respectively, in the MOD group. They were 252.2, 248.0, 255.1 MPa, respectively, in the ONLAY group. CONCLUSION. The onlay design (ONLAY group) protected tooth structures more effectively than inlay designs (O, MO, and MOD groups). However, stress magnitudes in restorations with various dental materials exhibited no significant difference among groups (O, MO, MOD, ONLAY).

Statement of problem. In dentistry, the minimally prepared inlay resin-bonded fixed partial denture (FPD) made of new ceromer / fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) was recently introduced. However, the appropriate dimensions for the long-term success and subsequent failure strength are still unknown. Purpose. The aim of this study was to investigate the most fracture-resistible thickness combination of the ceromer / FRC using a universal testing machine and an AE analyzer. Material and Methods. A metal jig considering the dimensions of premolars and molars was milled and 56-epoxy resin dies, which had a similar elastic modulus to that of dentin, were duplicated. According to manufacturer's instructions, the FRC beams with various thicknesses (2 to 4 mm) were constructed and veneered with the 1 or 2 mm-thick ceromers. The fabricated FPDs were luted with resin cement on the resin dies and stored at room temperature for 72 hours. AE (acoustic emission) sensors were attached to both ends, the specimens were subjected to a compressive load until fracture at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The AE and failure loads were recorded and analyzed statistically. Results. The results showed that the failure strength of the ceromer/FRC inlay FPDs was affected by the total thickness of the connectors rather than the ceromer to FRC ratio or the depth of the pulpal wall. Fracture was initiated from the interface and propagated into the ceromer layer regardless of the change in the ceromer / FRC ratio. Conclusion. Within the limitations of this study, the failure loads showed significant differences only in the case of different connector thicknesses, and no significant differences were found between the same connector thickness groups. The application of AE analysis method in a fiber-reinforced inlay FPD can be used to evaluate the fracture behavior and to analyze the precise fracture point.
This experiment was performed to observe the adhesion pattern and microleakage in the gingival margin according to variation in the resin cement thickness which results from thickness of Die spacer. which is considered to effect the adaptability of the composite resin inlays. Clearfil CR inlays were fabricated on stone models with CR Sep applicated once and Nice fit twice, 4 times, and 6 times each. After 2nd curing within the CRC-100 oven, CR inlays were cemented with CR inlay cement. Dye(2% methylene blue) penetration and adhesion pattern were evaluated after sectioning of gingival margin into :3 pieces. The results were as follows ; 1. The thickness of resin cement showed unevenchanging pattern with that of die spacer, namely, it was increased until 4 times' application of Nice-Fit but was decreased with 6 times' application of that. 2. The degree of dye penetration wasn't affected by cement thickness within a limited value. 3. Most of dye penetration was shown through the interface between cement and enamel rather than the interface between cement and CR inlay. This shows that the affinity of resin cement for CR inlay was superior to the adhesive strength with tooth structure. 4. No gap was found at the interface between enamel and cement but some showed separation between dentin and cement. It is concidered that the contraction force of cement was less than the bond strength with the enamel. 5. Lots of voids were found in the CR inlay and resin cement. There was a pooling tendency of bonding agent and cement in the axiogingival line angle portion. 6. In some specimens, cracks were shown in enamel margin. From this it could be considered that cavity preparation and surface treatment weakened the tooth structure.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate flexure strength of composite resin inlay according to heat treatment and duration in comparasion with visible light-cured resin. In this study, materials were used 1 visible light-cured resin and 3 kinds of composite resin inlays. Control group was visible light cured resin (Photo Clearfil Posterior) and experimental groups were composite resin inlays (Brilliant Dentin, Brilliant Enamel and Clearfil CR Inlay). Experimental groups were divided 3 groups: First group was Brilliant Dentin and second group was Brilliant Enamel and -third group was Clearfil CR Inlay. Used experimental groups were calculated flexural strength according to heat treatment and duration. The following results were obtained: 1. Experimental groups were higher flexural strength than control group. 2. At $100^{\circ}C$ when heat treatment carried out 7 minutes flexural strength elevated third group, second group, first group in turn and when heat treatment carried out 15 minutes flexural strength elevated third group, second group, first group in turn but no difference was showed between first and second group. 3. At $125^{\circ}C$ when heat treatment was carried out 7 minutes flexural strength elevated third group, second group, first group in turn and when heat treatment was carried out 15 minutes flexural strength elevated third group, first group, second group in turn but no difference was showed between first and second group. 4. In spite of heat treatment and duration the third group was highest flexural strength in the others groups.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the surface hardness of composite resins according to heat treatment. storage condition and storage time. In this study. two kinds of composite resin inlays and one kind of conventional posterior composite resin were used as experimental materials. One hundred eighty composite resin specimens were constructed from composite resin inlays and conventional posterior composite resin. The conditions of this study were heat treatment. storage condition and storage time. Hardness readings were taken from the top surface of each samples using the Vickers microhardness tester(MHT-l. Matsuzawa. Japan}. The following results from this study were obtained: 1. Regardless of storage condition. both composite resin inlay and conventional posterior composite resin have a higher surface hardness under heat treatment than not. 2. Composite resins with heat treatment have a higher surface hardness under dry storage than under water immersion. 3. In case of Clearfil Photo Posterior and Brilliant Enamel with heat treatment. there was no significant difference with time. but Clearfil CR Inlay with heat treatment. there was statistical difference after 24 hours. 4. Surface hardness of composite resins with coarse hybrid type was higher than that of composite resin with fine hybrid type.
Recently, a second generation composite resin system(ceromer) was introduced with significantly improved mechanical properties. The purpose of this study was to compare a ceromer with the other restorative materials and to assess its clinical usefulness. In this study, we used four restorative materials : amalgam (BESTALOY$^{(R)}$), indirect composite resin (Clearfil CR Inlay$^{(R)}$), ceromer (Targis$^{(R)}$) and ceramic (Vintage$^{(R)}$). And then we devided into four groups. The materials of each group were as follows : Amalgam group : BESTALOY$^{(R)}$ (Dong Myung Dental Industrial Co.) Composite Resin group : Clearfil CR Inlay$^{(R)}$ (Kuraray) Ceromer group : Targis$^{(R)}$ Dentin (Ivoclar-Vivadent) Ceramic group : Vintage$^{(R)}$ (Shofu Inc.) According to the above classification, we made samples through the polymerization of BESTALOY$^{(R)}$, Clearfil CR Inlay$^{(R)}$ and Targis$^{(R)}$ with separable cylindrical metal mold and firing of Vintage$^{(R)}$ in a investment mold. And then, we measured and compared the value of compressive strength, diametral tensile strength and Vicker's microhardness of each sample. The results were as follows : 1. Amalgam showed the highest value of compressive strength (390.37${\pm}$42.22MPa) and the value of ceromer was somewhere between ceramic and indirect composite resin. There were significant differences among the experimental groups(p<0.001). 2. Indirect composite resin showed the highest value of diametral tensile strength (74.21${\pm}$15.33MPa) and there was no significant difference with ceromer. Ceromer was higher diametral tensile strength than amalgam and ceramic (p<0.001). 3. Ceramic showed the highest value of microhardness (538.44${\pm}$37.38Hv) and the value of ceromer was somewhere between ceramic and indirect composite resin. There were significant differences among the experimental groups (p<0.001).
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a desensitizer on dentinal bond strength in cementation of composite resin inlay. Fifty four molar teeth were exposed the occlusal dentin. Class I inlay cavities were prepared and randomly divided into six groups. Control group: no agent, Group 1 : Isodan, Group 2 : One-step, Group 3 : All-Bond SE, Group 4 : Isodan + One-step, Group 5 : Isodan + All-Bond SE. Desensitizing agent and dentin bonding agents were applied immediately after the completion of the preparations. Impressions were then made. The composite resin inlays (Tescera, Bisco) were fabricated according to the manufacturers' guidelines. Cementation procedures followed a standard protocol by using resin cement (Bis-Cem, Bisco). Specimens were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. All specimens were sectioned to obtained sticks with $1.0{\times}1.0\;mm^2$ cross sectional area. The microtensile bond strength (${\mu}TBS$) was tested at crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. The data was analyzed using one way ANOVA and Tukey's test. Scanning electron microscopy analysis was made to examine the details of the bonding interface, 1. Group 1 showed significantly lower ${\mu}TBS$ than other groups (p<0.05). 2. There was no significant difference between the ${\mu}TBS$ of Group 3 and Group 5. 3. The ${\mu}TBS$ of Group 4 showed significantly lower than that of Group 2 (p<0.05). In conclusion, a desensitizer (Isodan) might have an adverse effect on the bond strength of composite resin inlay to dentin.

Purpose: To evaluate 2D and 3D of occulsal, mesial-occlusal and mesial-occlusal-distal cavity of composite resin inlay. Methods: Abutment tooth 16, 36 of FDI system was selected for the study. Inlay prostheses classified as occlusal cavity (OC group), mesial-occlusal (MOC) and mesial-occlusal-distal cavity (MODC) were prepared using composite resin. Composite resin was injected with composite resin in prepared tooth cavity and then photopolymerized with UV light. Additional thermal polymerization was performed. Marginal gap of composite resin inlays were measured by digital microscope(x160) with silicone replica technique. The data was analyzed from statistical software for Kruskal-Wallis test (${\alpha}=0.05$). 3-dimensional analysis was analyzed through superimposition method. Results: The smallest 2D marginal fit measure of the three groups was $47.0{\pm}21.6{\mu}m$ in the MOC group. The largest 2D marginal was $69.1{\pm}33.8{\mu}m$ in the MODC group. In the trueness of the three groups, the most accurate figure was $14.4{\pm}2.3{\mu}m$ for the MODC group. In Precision, the most accurate figure was $14.5{\pm}4.3{\mu}m$ for the MODC group. Conclusion : In this study, 2D marginal fit of OC, MOC, and MODC cavities fabricated with composite resin was applicable to all clinical applications. In the 3D inner surface accuracy evaluation, the MODC group showed the accuracy results.
FRC/ceromer system provides the clinician with a durable, flexible, and esthetic alternative to conventional porcelain fused to metal crowns. FRC is the matrix which is silica-coated and embedded in a resin matrix. The ceromer material which is a second generation indirect composite resin contains silanized, microhybrid inorganic fillers embedded in a light-curing organic matrix. FRC/ceromer restoration has a several advantages: better shock absorption, less wear of occluding teeth, translucency, color stability, bonding ability to dental hard tissues, and resiliency. It has versatility of use including inlay, onlay, single crown, and esthetic veneers. With adhesive technique, it can be used for single tooth replacement in forms of inlay adhesion bridge. In single tooth missing case, conventional PFM bridge has been used for esthetic restoration. However, this restoration has several disadvantages such as high cost, potential framework distortion during fabrication, and difficulty in repairing fractures. Inlay adhesion bridge with FRC/ceromer would be a good alternative treatment plan. This article describes a cases restored with Targis/Vectris inlay adhesion bridge. Tooth preparation guide, fabrication procedure, and cementation procedure of this system will be dealt. The strength/weakness of this restoration will be mentioned, also. If it has been used appropriately in carefully selected case, it can satisfy not only dentist's demand of sparing dental hard tissue but also patient's desire of seeking a esthetic restorations with a natural appearance.
