For the construction of PC bridge piers the implementation of 1992 seismic provisions, longitudinal steels were practically lap-spliced in the plastic hinge region. Experimental investigation was conducted ductility of evaluate the seismic earthquake-experienced reinforced concrete columns with 2,5 aspect ratio. Six test specimens were mode with test parameters: confinement ratios, lap splices, and retrofitting FRP materials. They were damaged under series of artificial earthquakes that could be compatible in Korean peninsula. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged columns were retested under inelastic reversal cyclic loading simultaneously under a constant axial load, P=0.1f$\_$ck/A$\_$g/. Residual seismic performance of damaged columns was evaluated and compared to that of the corresponding original columns. Test results show that PC bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal steels appeared to fail at low ductility. This was due to the debonding of the lap splice, which resulted from insufficient development of the longitudinal steels. The specimens externally wrapped with composite FRP straps in the potential plastic hinge region indicated significant improvement both in flexural strength and displacement ductility.
Theories for advanced composite structures are too difficult for such design engineers for construction and some simple but accurate enough methods are necessary. The senior author has reported that some laminate orientations have decreasing values of $D_{16}$, $B_{16}$, $D_{26}$ and $B_{26}$ stiffnesses as the ply number increases. For such plates the fiber orientations given above behave as specially orthotropic plates and simple formulas developed by the senior author. Most of the bidge and building slabs on girders have large aspect ratios For such cases frurther simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms(Mx) on the relevant partial differential equationsof equilibrium In this paper, the result of the study on the subject problem is presented.
This paper describes the development and fabrication of a high temperature superconducting motor which consists of HTS rotor and air-core stator. The machine was designed for the rated power of 100hp at 1800 rpm. The HTS field windings are composed of the double-pancake coils wound with AMSC's SUS-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor. These were assembled on the support structure and fixed by a bandage of glass-fiber composite. The cooling system is based on the heat transfer mechanism of the thermosyphon by using GM cryocooler as cooling source. The cold head is in contact with the condenser of a Ne-filled thermosyphon. The rotor assembly was tested independently at the stationary state and combined with stator. Characteristic parameters such as reactances, inductances, and time constants were determined to obtain a consistent overview of the machine operation properties. This motor has met all design parameters by demonstrating HTS field winding, cryogenic refrigeration systems and an air-core armature winding cooled with air. The HTS field winding could be cooled down below 30K. No-load test of open-circuit characteristics(OCC) and short-circuit characteristics(SCC) and load test with resistive load bank were conducted in generator mode. Maximum operating current of field winding at 30K was 120A. From OCC and SCC test results synchronous inductance and synchronous reactance were 2.4mH, 0.49pu, respectively. Efficiency of this HTS machine was 93.3% in full load(100hp) test. This paper will present design, construction, and basic experimental test results of the 100hp HTS machine.

Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites have high specific stiffness and high specific strength. Therefore, they are increasingly being use, instead of conventional metallic materials in the aviation and automobile industries, where there is a strong demand for lightweight materials. In aircraft, the fuselage is exposed to severe conditions of high temperatures and high humidity. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the strength of CFRP composites under real conditions from the viewpoint of aircraft safety. In this study, CFRP specimens were immersed in distilled water at $75^{\circ}C$ for a long time. Then, tensile tests were performed on these specimens, and the fracture characteristics of the fractured surfaces were analyzed using SEM. A fatigue test was performed on specimens immersed for 300 days with R=0.1, and it was confirmed that the fatigue life deteriorated in immersed specimens compared to specimens that were not immersed.
The effects of plaster on the behavior of single-story single-bay masonry-infilled steel frames under in-plane base accelerations have been experimentally investigated by a shake-table. Tested structures were made in a 1/3 scale, with realistic material properties and construction methods. Steel frames with high and low flexural rigidity of beams and columns were considered. Each type of frame was tested with three variants of masonry: (i) non-plastered masonry; (ii) masonry infill with conventional plaster on both sides; and (iii) masonry infill with a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) net reinforced plaster on both sides. Masonry bricks were made of lightweight cellular concrete. Each frame was firstly successively exposed to horizontal base accelerations of an artificial accelerogram, and afterwards, to horizontal base accelerations of a real earthquake. Characteristic displacements, strains and cracks in the masonry were established for each applied excitation. It has been concluded that plaster strengthens the infill and prevents damages in it, which results in more favorable behavior and increased bearing capacity of plastered masonry-infilled frames compared to non-plastered masonry-infilled frames. The load-bearing contribution of the adopted PVC net in the plaster was not noticeable for the tested specimens, probably due to relative small cross section area of fibers in the net. Behavior of masonry-infilled steel frames significantly depends on frame stiffness. Strong frames have smaller displacements than weak frames, which reduces deformations and damages of an infill.

A SCARA type direct drive robot which can be used in the assembly operation was designed and manufactured. Graphite fiber epoxy composite material was used in the fabrication of the robot arm structure in order to improve the speed of the robot arm with a high damping effect. For model-based control and sensitivity analysis of system parameters, the dynamic model of robot arm and drive servo amplifier parameters such as equivalent gains of PWM driver and velocity gains of servo system were estimated from frequency response tests. The complete dynamic model for overall robot system was used in the simulation of the open-loop control. The simulation results agreed reasonably well to the experimental results. The feedforward control using the dynamic models improved the trajectory tracking performance, decreasing the tracking error by factor of three compared with PID control. This study found that the inverse dynamic model of the robot arm including the drive servo system showed better performances than the case of arm dynamic model only.
Low temperature cure prepregs are being developed for use in the preparation of large-structured fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites with good performance. Cure behavior and chemorheology of low temperature cure epoxy resin system, based on epoxy resin, curing agent, and accelerators, were investigated to provide a matrix resin suitable for the prepreg preparation. Characteristics of cure reaction were studied in both dynamic and isothermal conditions by means of differential scanning calorimetry and rheometry. The low temperature cure epoxy resin system suggested in this study as a matrix resin was curable at $80^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, and showed the gel times of 120 and 20 min at 80 and $90^{\circ}C$, respectively. Thermal and mechanical properties of the cured sample were almost the same as high temperature cure counterparts.
This study has observed that the dynamic behavior of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) in low velocity impact varies with impact velocity. MMCs with 15 fiber volume percent were fabricated by using the squeeze casting method. The AC8A was used as the matrix, and the alumina and the carbon were used as reinforcements. The tensile and vibration tests conducted yielded the yielded the tensile stress and elastic modulus of MMCs The low pass filter and instrumented impact test machine was adopted to study dynamic behaviors of MMCs corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact corresponding to impact velocity. Stable impact signals were obtained by using the low pass filter. Impact energy of unreinforced alloy and MM s increased as the impact velocity increased. The increase of crack propagation energy was especially prominent, but the dynamic toughness of each material did not change much. To show the relation between crack initiation energy and dynamic fracture toughness, a simple model was proposed by using the strain energy and stress distribution at notch. The model revealed that crack initiation energy is proportional to the square of dynamic fracture toughness and inversely proportional to elastic modulus.
In recent years, the investigation on the development of fiber reinforced plastic(FRP) Re-Bar has been greatly increased due to the attractive physical and mechanical properties of FRP. The primary reason of such a tendency is in the fact that it does not ordinarily cause durability problems such as those associated with steel reinforcement corrosion. This study is an experimental investigation on the flexural behavior of one-way concrete slabs, which can be used to construct bridge deck, reinforced with GFRP Re-Bar bundle. The tensile tests of GFRP Re-Bar produced by domestic industry and third point bending tests of one-way slab specimens reinforced with GFRP Re-Bar bundle are peformed. For all slab specimens, load-deflection relations are predicted by using the ACI committee 440 and the results are compared with experimental ones. In order to establish the design criteria or guidelines of concrete flexural member reinforced with FRP Re-Bar, it is needed to evaluate the serviceability limit state as well as the strength limit state.
Densification occurs by the inelastic flow of the matrix materials during the consolidation processes at high temperature for MMCs, and the results depend on many process conditions such as applied pressure, temperature and volume fraction of fiber and matrix materials. This is particularly important in titanium matrix composites since material failure may occur by either the applied conditions or microstructural parameters through the processes, and thus a generic model based on micro-mechanical approaches enabling the evolution of density over time to be predicted has been developed. The mode developed is then implemented into FEM so that practical process simulation has been carried out. Further the experimental investigation of the consolidation behavior of SiC/Ti-6Al-4V composites using vacuum hot pressing has been performed, and the results obtained are compared with the model predictions.
