  • An overall feature to simulate composite behavior and to predict closed solution has been performed for the application to the stress analysis in a discontinuous composite solid. To obtain the internal field quantities of composite, the micromechanics analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) were implemented. For the numerical illustration, an aligned axisymmetric single fiber model has been employed to assess field quantities. Further, a micromechanics model to describe the elastic behavior of fiber or whisker reinforced metal matrix composites has been developed and the stress concentrations between reinforcements were investigated using the modified shear lag model with the comparions between reinforcements were investigated using the modified shear lag model with the comparison of finite element analysis (FEA). The rationale is based on the replacement of the matrix between fiber ends with the fictitious fiber to maintain the compatibility of displacement and traction. It was found that the new model gives a good agreement with FEA results in the small fiber aspect ratio regime as well as that in the large fiber aspect ratio regime. It was found that the proposed simulation methodology for stress analysis is applicable to the complicated inhomogeneous solid for the investigation of micromechanical behavior.

  • Carbon fiber has excellent specific strength, corrosion resistance and heat resistance. And p-Aramid fiber has high toughness and heat resistance and high elasticity, and is used in various fields such as industrial protective materials, bulletproof helmets and vests, as well as industrial fields. However, carbon fiber is relatively expensive, and is susceptible to brittle fracture behavior due to its low fracture strain. On the other hand, the aramid fiber tends to decrease in elastic modulus and strength when applied to the epoxy matrix, but it is inexpensive and has higher elongation and fracture toughness than carbon fiber. Thus the twill hybrid carbonaramid fiber reinforced composite laminate composite was investigated for a delamination fracture toughness under Mode I loading by 2 kinds of MBT and MCC deduction. The specimen was fabricated with 20 hybrid fabric plies. The initial crack was made by inserting the teflon tape in the center plane with a0/W=0.5 length. The results show that SERR(Strain Energy Release Rate) as the critical and stable delamination fracture toughness were 0.09 kJ/㎡, 0.386 kJ/㎡ by MBT deduction, and 0.192 kJ/㎡, 0.67 kJ/㎡ by MCC deduction, respectively.

  • Fiber fracture is one of the dominant failure phenomena to determine total mechanical properties in composites. Fiber fracture locations were measured by optical microscopic method and acoustic emission (AE) as functions of matrix toughness and surface treatment by the electrodeposition (ED), and then two methods were compared. Two AE sensors were attached on the epoxy specimen and fiber fracture signals were detected with elapsed time. The interfacial shear stress (IFSS) was measured using tensile fragmentation test and AE system. In ED-treated case, the number of the fiber fracture measured by an optical method and AE was more than that of the untreated case. The signal number measured by AE were rather smaller than the number of fragments measured by optical method, since some fiber fracture signals were lost while AE detection. However, one-to-one correspondence between the x-position location by AE and real break positions by optical method was generally established well. The fiber break source location using AE can be a valuable method to measure IFSS for semi- or nontransparent matrix composites nondestructively (NDT).

  • This study examined the effect that the amorphous metallic fibers had on the static mechanical properties and the impact resistance of cement composites to those of hooked steel fibers. The hooked steel fiber exhibited pull-out from the matrix after the peak flexural stress was attained, while the amorphous metallic fiber was not pulled out from the matrix, but was instead cut off. In terms of impact resistance, the amorphous metallic fiber reinforced cement composite was found to be more effective at resisting cracking than the hooked steel fiber reinforced cement composite. Therefore, amorphous metallic fiber should be used in fiber reinforced cement composite materials, and for structural materials, and for protection panels.

  • Recently, natural fiber reinforced composite is attracting attention and considered as an environmentally friendly material. Usually cellulosic fibers are used to reinforce the composites, but some protein fibers such as silk and wool serve the same purpose. In this paper, we proposed a method of producing artistic composite from artistic fabric by using silk fiber reinforced biodegradable plastic, which is designated as 'silk composite', for reinforcement. In order to expand applications of the silk composite, we performed the compression molding of decorative laminates with woody material, which was selected as a core material, and examined the properties of molded decorative laminates with various content of the silk composite. Since plywood and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) are widely used for decorative laminates, we selected them as core materials. As a result, flexible decorative laminates with high flexural strength were obtained by compounding the silk composite with wood materials.

  • Optical fiber vibrations sensors (OFVSs) and extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) were used in damage monitoring of fiber-metal laminates(FML). The optical fiber vibration sensor and EFPI were applied in order to detect and evaluate the strain, damage and failure of FML. Damages in composites, such as matrix cracks, delamination and fiber breakage may occur as a result of excessive load, fatigue and low-velocity impacts. Tensile test was performed with the measurement of optical signal and acoustic emission (AE). The signals of the optical fiber vibration sensor due to damages were quantitatively evaluated by wavelet transform. EFPI was less sensible to the damage signals compared with the optical fiber vibration sensor. It was found that damage information of comparable in quality to acoustic emission data could be obtained from the optical fiber vibration sensor signals.

  • Cylindrical composite lattice structures are manufactured by filament winding process. The fiber volume fraction non-uniformity and resin rich layers that can occur in the manufacturing process affect the stiffness and strength of the structure. Through the cross-section examination of the hoop and helical ribs, which are major elements of the composite lattice structure, we observed the fiber volume fraction non-uniformity and resin rich layers. Based on the results of the cross-section examination, the stiffness of the ribs was analyzed through the experimental and theoretical approaches. The results show that the fiber volume fraction non-uniformity and resin rich layers have an obvious influence on the rib stiffness of composite lattice structure.

  • Fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites are applied to transport industries to lightweight of body, and applications will be expanded gradually. In this study, the impregnation and mechanical properties of continuous glass fiber (GF) reinforced polycarbonate (PC) composites were evaluated with different molecular weights of PC. The continuous GF reinforced PC composite were prepared by using GF fabric and PC film via continuous compression molding method. The melting flow index and tensile strength of PC matrix were evaluated with different molecular weights. Mechanical properties (tensile, flexural, and compressive) and pore rate of GF/PC composite were evaluated with different molecular weights of PC. The fracture behavior was analyzed to fracture surface of GF/PC composite using FE-SEM images. As these results, it was condition of representing the best mechanical property that the GF/PC composite was prepared by using PC of 20,000 g/mol as matrix.

  • In this study, the mechanical properties of a carbon fiber/polypropylene composite were evaluated according to the carbon fiber surface treatment. Carbon fiber surface treatments such as silane coupling agents and plasma treatment were performed to enhance the interfacial strength between carbon fibers and polypropylene. The treated carbon fiber surface was characterized by XPS, SEM, and single-filament tensile test. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of the composite with respect to the surface treatment was determined by a short beam shear test. The test results showed that the ILSS of the plasma-treated specimen increased with the treatment time. The ILSS of the specimen treated with a silane coupling agent after plasma treatment increased by 48.7% compared to that of the untreated specimen.
