The braking hose in the automotive hydraulic braking system exhibits the complicated anisotropic large deformation while its movable end is moving along the cyclic path according to the steering and bump/rebound motions of vehicle. The complicated large deformation may cause not only the interference with other adjacent automotive parts but also the durability problem resulting in the fatal microcraking. In this regard, the design of high-durable braking hose with the interference-free layout becomes a hot issue in the automotive industry. However, since it has been traditionally relied on the cost-/time-consuming trial and error experiments, the cost- and time-effective optimum design method that can replace the experiment is highly desirable. Meanwhile, the hose deformed configuration and fatigue life are different for different hose cyclic paths, so that their characteristic investigation becomes an important preliminary research subject. As a preliminary step for developing the optimum design methodology, we in this study investigate the hose deformed configuration and the fatigue life for four representative hose cyclic paths.

This paper deals with the torsional buckling behavior of plain weave GFRP composite cylindrical shells having comparatively small length-to-diameter ratio. Boundary conditions corresponding to clamped ends and simply supported ends are considered. Torsional buckling loads and circumferential mode numbers according to the variation of shell length-to-radius ratio are conformed. To verify the availability of the theoretical results, comparison with the theoretical and experimental results are made.

This paper presents shape design, surface construction, and cutting path generation for the surface of marine ship propeller blades. A propeller blade should be designed to satisfy performance constraints that include operational speed which impacts rotations per minutes, stresses related to deliverable horst power, and the major length of the marine ship which impacts the blade size and shape characteristics. Primary decision variables that affect efficiency in the design of a marine ship propeller blade are the blade diameter and the expanded area ratio. The blade design resulting from these performance constraints typically consists of sculptured surfaces requiring four or five axis contoured machining. In this approach a standard blade geometry description consisting of blade sections with offset nominal points recorded in an offset table is used. From this table the composite Bezier surface geometry of the blade is created. The control vertices of the Hazier surface patches are determined using a chord length fitting procedure from tile offset table data. Cutter contact points and path intervals are calculated to minimize travel distance and production time while maintaining a cusp height within tolerance limits. Long path intervals typically generate short tool paths at the expense of increased however cusp height. Likewise, a minimal tool path results in a shorter production time. Cutting errors including gouging and under-cut, which are common errors in machining sculptured surfaces, are also identified for both convex and concave surfaces. Propeller blade geometry is conducive to gouging. The result is a minimal error free cutting path for machining propeller blades for marine ships.

The bucking and postbuckling behavior of composite laminated long cylinders under lateral pressure are investigated by the nonlinear finite element method. A long cylinder of 3-D shell problem is modelled as 2-D plane strain problem for analysis. And for the finite element analysis, eight nodes quadratic element is utilized. Arc-length method is adopted for the iteration and load-increment along postbuckling equilibrium path. The composite laminated cylinders in study are composed of cross-plied uniaxially reinforced shells. As a prsult, buckling load and postbuckling behavior are discussed.

The main aim of the present paper is to present the results of a full-scale experimental investigation to study the structural behaviour of composite steel beams. The composite beam was made of cold-formed steel section shapes filled with reinforced concrete. First a comprehensive description of the experimental results in terms of: deflections, deformations, slippage and stress levels on critical steps of the load path is presented. The experimental results were then compared to theoretical values obtained by the use of an analytical model based on ultimate limit state stress blocks. Finally, a practical application of the use of this structural solution is depicted.

A new composite control method for a carriage balancing single inverted pendulum system is proposed and applied to swing up the pendulum and to stabilize it under the state constraint. The target inverted pendulum system has an extremely limited length of the cart(below 16cm). The proposed swing-up controller comprises a sliding mode control algorithm and an optimal control algorithm based on two regions: the region near the inverted unstable equilibrium position and the rest of the state space including the downward stable equilibrium position. The sliding mode controller uses a switching control action to converge along the specified path(hyperplane) derived from energy equation from a state around the path to desired state(standing position). An optimal control method is also used to guarantee the stability at unstable equilibrium position. Compared with the reported controllers, it is simpler and easier to implement. Experimental results are given to show the effectiveness of this controller.

We propose a new method to evaluate the network reliability which greatly reduces the intermediate steps toward calculations of maximum capacity flow by excluding unnecessary simple paths contained in the set of failure simple paths. By using signed simple paths and signed flow, we show that our method is more efficient than that of Lee and Park (2001a) in the number of generated composite paths and in the procedure for obtaining minimal success composite paths. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the use and the efficiency of the method.
Modification of C/C composite bipolar plate for improving electrical conductivity was carried out by addition of electroconductive carbon black (EC-CB). Carbon black was carefully mixed to methanol-containing phenolic resin, impregnated into 2D-carbon fabrics, hot pressed and then carbonized to obtain composite plate. Inclusion of electro-conductive carbon black enhanced the electrical conductivity of the C/C composites by increasing the conduction path. Addition of 10 vol% carbon black increased the electrical conductivity from 5.5/${\Omega}cm$ to 32/${\Omega}cm$ and reduced the crack formation by filling effect, resulting in the increase of flexural properties of composite plate. However, at carbon black content over 10 vol%, flexural properties decreased by delaminating role of excess carbon black at the interface in C/C composites.

Since carbon fiber epoxy composite materials have excellent properties for structures due to their high specific strength, high specific modulus, high damping and low thermal expansion, the hollow shafts made of carbon fiber epoxy composites have been widely used for power transmission shafts for motor vehicles , spindles of machine tools, motor base, bearing mount for tool up and manufacturing. The molded composite machine elements are not usually accurate enough for mechanical machine elements, which require turning drilling , cutting and grinding. The experiment are surface grinding wheel GC60 to the carbon fiber epoxy composite specimen with respect to staking angle [0]nT , [45]nT, [90]nT on the CNC grinding machine. In this paper, the surface grinding characteristics of composite plate, which are surveyed experimentally and analytically with respect to the grinding force, surface roughness and wheel loading according to the variable depth of cut, wheel velocity and table feed rate are investigated.

Cast Nafion-based composite membranes containing different amounts of organic, nanorod-shaped polyrotaxane were prepared and characterized, with the aim of improving the properties of polymer electrolyte membranes for direct methanol fuel cell applications. Polyrotaxane was prepared using the inclusion-complex reaction between ${\alpha}$-cyclodextrin and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) of different molecular weights. The addition of polyrotaxane to Nafion changed the morphology and reduced the crystallinity. The conductivity of the composite membranes increased with increasing polyrotaxane content up to 5 wt%, but then decreased at higher polyrotaxane contents. Well-dispersed, organic polyrotaxane inside the membrane can provide a tortuous path for the transport of methanol, as the methanol permeability depends on the aspect ratio of polyrotaxane, which is controlled by the molecular weight of PEG. All of the Nafion-based, polyrotaxane composite membranes showed a higher selectivity parameter than the commercial Nafion films did.
