In an experimental and analytical study on the structural behavior of slender circular steel-concrete composite columns, eleven specimens were tested to investigate the effects of three ways to apply a load to a column. The load was applied eccentrically to the concrete section, to the steel section or to the entire section. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models were established and verified with the experimental results. The analytical models were also used to study how the behavior of the column was influenced by the bond strength between the steel tube and the concrete core and the by confinement of the concrete core offered by the steel tube. The results obtained from the tests and the finite element analyses showed that the behavior of the column was greatly influenced by the method used to apply a load to the column section. When relying on just the natural bond, full composite action was achieved only when the load was applied to the entire section of the column. Furthermore, because of the slenderness effects the columns did not exhibit the beneficial effects of composite behavior in terms of increased concrete strength due to the confinement.

This paper describes the effects on SUS tube of power optical fiber composite cable on underground transmission lines. The effects on grounding, air gap between SUS tube and metal sheath, contact resistance between outer semi-conducting layer and metal sheath and grounding of SUS tube application or not are variously analysed using EMTP in normal operating condition as well as single line to ground fault. From these results, in this paper, the scheme for protecting the electrically abnormal phenomena will be established on power-optical fiber composite cable of underground transmission lines. This paper can contribute to specification of grounding reference of SUS tube of optical fiber composite power cable system.

This paper proposes methods to incorporate station related aging failures in composite system reliability assessment. Aging failures of station components, such as circuit breakers and bus bars, are a major concern in composite power system planning and operation as an increasing number of station components approach the wear-out phase. This paper presents probabilistic models for circuit breakers involving aging failures and relevant evaluation techniques to examine the effects of station related aging outages. The technique developed to incorporate station related aging failures are illustrated by application to a small composite test system. The paper illustrates the effects of circuit breaker aging outages on bulk system reliability evaluation and examines the relative effects of variations in component age. System sensitivity analysis is illustrated by varying selected component parameters. The results show the implications of including component aging failure considerations in the overall analysis of a composite system.
The design of composite space trusses is a demanding task that involves taking several decisions on the truss depth, number of panels, member configuration, number of chord layers and concrete slab thickness and grade. The focus in this paper is on the design of top concrete slabs of composite space trusses, and in particular their thickness. Several effects must be considered in the process of designing the slab before an optimum thickness can be chosen. These effects include the inplane forces arising from shear interaction with the steel sub-truss and the flexural. and sheer effects of direct lateral slab loading. They also include a constructional consideration that the thickness must allow for sufficient cover and adequate space for placing the reinforcement. The work presented in this paper shows that the structural requirements on the concrete slab thickness are in many cases insignificant compared with the constructional requirements.
Experimental studies on the behaviors of box-shape steel reinforced concrete (SRC) composite beams were conducted. Seven 1:3 scale model composite beams were tested to failure. Each of the beams was simply supported at the ends and two concentrated loads were applied at the one-third span and two-thirds span respectively. Experimental results indicate that the flexural strength can be enhanced when the ratio of flexural reinforcements and flange thickness of the shape steel are increased; the shear strength is enhanced with increase of web thickness of the shape steel. Insignificant effects of concrete in the box-shape steel are found on improving the flexural strength and shear strength of the box-shape SRC composite beams, thus concrete inside the box-shape steel can be saved, and the weight of the SRC beams can be decreased. Shear studs can strengthen the connection and co-work effects between the shape steel and the concrete and enhance the shear strength, but stud design for the composite beams should be further improved. Formulas for flexural and shear strength of the composite beams are proposed, and the calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental results. In general, the box-shape SRC composite beam is a kind of ductile member, and suitable for extensive engineering application.

To fully understand shear mechanisms and composite effects of circular concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, systematic numerical investigations were conducted in this paper by improved finite element models. The triaxial plastic-damage constitutive model of the concrete and the interactions between the concrete and steel tube were considered. Afterwards, the critical and upper bound shear span ratios of the circular CFST column under lateral shear loading were determined. The composite effects between the two materials were analyzed by comparing the shear resistance with plain concrete column and hollow steel tube. In addition, a method that predicts the shear bearing capacity of a circular CFST column was proposed. The confining effects on the concrete core and the restraining effects on the steel tube were considered in this method. The proposed formula can predict more accurate results than the methods in different codes and references.

A decoupled thermo-~lezoelectric-mechanical model of composite laminates with surface bonded piezoelectric actuators, subjected to externally applied load, temperature change load, electric field load is developed. The governing differential equations are obtained by applying the principle of free energy and variational techniques. A higher order zigzag theory displacement field is employed to accurately capture the transverse shear and normal effects in laminated composite plates of arbitrary thickness.

Composite materials are drawing attention as the leading fabrics for casual wear. One reason for this is the shift in fashion trend to more casual apparel. Espectations of further acceleration in this area are so high that woven fabric movement are taking more and more of a new turn away from conventional materials made of fine denier filament to wool-like fabrics by mellange effects.

Thermally induced vibration response of solar array is investigated. The solar array model consists of composite thin walled beam and solar blanket, spreader bar. The composite thin walled beam incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constituent materials. The solar blanket is a membrane subjected to uniform tension in the z direction. The spreader bar is a rigid member. A coupled thermal structure analysis that includes the effects of structural deformations on heating and temperature gradient is investigated. A stability criterion given in parameters for establishes the conditions for thermal flutter.

The structural characteristics of concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer tubes were studied. The concept of concrete-filled composite columns was introduced to overcome the corrosion problems associated with steel and concrete piles under severe environments. Other benefits of composite columns include low maintenance cost, high earthquake resistance, and long expected endurance period. Several experiments were conducted; 1) compression test for short-length composite columns, 2) uniaxial compression tests on a total of 7 columns with various slenderness ratios. Short-length columns give higher strength and ductility revealing high confinement action in concrete. Failure strengths, failure patterns, confinement effects, and stress-strains relations were analyzed for slender columns. Current study will show the feasibility of concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer composite columns in corrosive environments, and will provide an experimental database for columns that are externally reinforced by multidirectional fibers.
