동시경화 강철-복합재료 원형 단일 겹치기 조인트의 최적설계 (Optimum Design of Co-cured Steel-Composite Tubular Single Lap Joints)

  • In this paper, a failure model for co-cured steel-composite tubular single lap joints has been proposed incorporating the nonlinear mechanical behavior of steel adherends and different failure mode s such as steel adherend failure and composite adherend failure. The characteristics of the co-cured steel-composite tubular single lap joint were investigated with respect to the test temperature, the stacking sequence of composite adherend, the thickness ratio of steel adherend to composite adherend, and the scarf ratio of steel adherend. Thus, the optimum design method for the co-cured steel-composite tubular single lap joint was suggested.

  • Since the performance of joints usually determines the structural efficiency of composite structures, an extensive knowledge of the behavior of adhesive joints and the related effect on joint strength is essential for design purposes. In this study, the torque capacity of adhesive joints was predicted using the combined thermal and mechanical analyses when the adherend was a composite tube. A finite element analysis was performed to evaluate residual thermal stresses developed in the joint, and mechanical s stresses in the adhesive were calculated including both the nonlinear adhesive behavior and the behavior of composite tubes. Three different joint failure modes were considered to predict joint failure: interfacial failure, adhesive bulk failure, and adherend failure. The influence of the composite adherend stacking angle on the residual thermal stresses was investigated, and how the residual thermal stresses affect the joint strength was also discussed. Finally, the predicted results were compared with experimental results available in literature.

  • The co-cured Joining method, which is regarded as an adhesively bonded Joining method, is an efficient joining technique because both curing and bonding processes for the composite structures can be achieved simultaneously. It requires neither surface treatment onto the composite adherend nor an additional adhesive joining process because the excess resin, which is extracted from composite materials during consolidation, accomplishes the co-cured Joining process. Since the adhesive of the co-cured joint is the same material as the resin of the composite adherend, the analysis and design of the co-cured joint for composite structures are simpler than those of an adhesively bonded joint, which uses an additional adhesive. In this paper, effects of the manufacturing parameters, namely surface roughness, stacking sequence of the composite adherend, and manufacturing pressure in the autoclave during curing process, on the tensile load bearing capacity of the co-cured single lap joint will be experimentally investigated.

  • The use of the co-cured joining method for composite structures is attractive due to several benefits. However, since the design stress level in cyclic loads is often smaller than the joint strength obtained from the static tensile load test, it is important to establish proper fatigue design criteria. Although some researchers have reported on co-cured joints, there are only a few papers published on the fatigue characteristics of co-cured joints. In this paper, the effect of bond parameters on the fatigue characteristics of a steel-composite co-cured double lap joint under cyclic tensile loads was experimentally investigated. We considered the surface roughness of the steel adherend and the stacking sequence of the composite adherend as bond parameters. A fatigue failure mechanism of the co-cured double lap joint was explained systematically by investigating the surfaces of failed specimens.

탄소 복합재-알루미늄 단일겹침 접착 체결부의 강도에 관한 인자연구 (A Parametric Study on the Strength of Single-Lap Bonded Joints of Carbon Composite and Aluminum)

  • 본 논문에서는 탄소 복합재와 알루미늄으로 구성된 이종재료 단일겹침 접착 체결부에서, 파손하중에 영향을 미치는 주요인자들의 효과를 실험적으로 연구하였다. 실험을 위해 접착압력 4가지(2, 3, 4, 6기압), 겹침길이 6가지(15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 mm), 모재 두께 2가지(1.58, 3.01 mm)에 대한 시편 총 66개를 제작하였다. 실험 결과 접착제 FM73에 대해 제작사에서 제시한 접착압력은 약 3기압이었지만 본 연구에서 사용한 이종재료 접착의 경우, 최소 4기압 이상의 접착압력이 필요함을 확인하였다. 겹침길이를 증가시킬 경우 파손하중이 증가하지만 접착부의 폭과 길이의 비가 1을 넘어갈 경우 접착강도 즉 단위 접착면적당의 파손하중의 증가는 크지 않았다. 모재의 두께도 접착부 파손하중 및 강도에 큰 영향을 미쳤으며 모재의 두께가 약 2배로 증가할 때 접착강도는 $12{\sim}32%$까지 증가하였다. 접착부의 파손은 대부분 복합재 모재의 층간분리 형태로 발생하였으며, 접착압력이 높아질수록, 접착길이가 길어질수록 층간분리가 발생하는 위치가 적층판 내부로 깊게 확대되는 경향이 있다.

Shear Strength of an Aluminum Alloy Bonded with a DP-460 Adhesive: Single Lap-shear Joints

  • Single lap-shear joints (SLJ) specimens with and without partial round fillets were fabricated to measure the average shear strength of adhesives. The effects of the length of the adherend on the SLJ specimens were also investigated. An epoxy adhesive was used to bond aluminum alloy. Tensile tests were performed on the adhesive bulk specimens to measure the mechanical properties. The finite element analysis (FEA) method was used to measure the adhesive stress distributions, i.e., the peel and shear stresses, on the bonded part. The experimental results revealed that the specimen consisting short length of adherend and without the partial round fillets exhibited the smallest average shear strength of adhesive among the investigated specimens. FEA revealed that the low average shear strength for the specimen with a short adherend length was caused by high stress concentrations on the adhesive at the edge of the bonded part.

끝단형상에 따른 복합소재 단일겹치기 체결부의 응력집중 저감에 관한 연구 (End-Shape Effect for Stress Concentration Reduction of Composite Single-Lap Bonded Joint)

  • 본 연구에서는 복합소재 단일겹치기 조인트의 접착부재 형상 및 필렛 유무에 따른 응력집중 완화 효과를 평가하였다. 이를 위해 6가지 서로 다른 끝단부 형상에 대해 비선형 유한요소 해석을 수행하였다. 또한, 복합재 접착부재와 접착제의 다양한 강성비에 따른 6가지 모델의 최대 전단 및 수직응력의 변화를 고찰하였다. 접착부재가 순방향 테이퍼를 갖는 모델의 경우에는 가장 높은 응력값을 보여 조인트의 접합강도가 가장 취약할 것으로 예상되었다. 이에 반해, 접착부재가 역방향 테이퍼를 갖고 필렛이 존재할 경우 가장 낮은 응력값을 보였다. 접착부재와 접착제의 강성변화에 따른 최대응력 변화를 고찰한 결과 접착부재의 강성은 클수록, 접착제 강성은 낮을수록 응력집중은 완화되었다.

단면형상에 따른 단일겹치기 이음의 피로 및 정적 토크 전달특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Effect of the Cross Sectional Shapes on the Static and Fatigue Torque Transmission Capabilities of Adhesive Single Lap Joints)

  • In this paper, the effects of the adhesive thickness and adherend roughness on the static and fatigue strengths of the adhesively bonded circular single lap joints has been investigated by an experimental method. The stacking sequence effect of the composite adherend on the static and fatigue strength and the fracture patterns of the adhesive failure were also observed. Since the circular single lap joint fails catastrophically beyond the static strength of fatigue limit, the tubular polygonal adhesively bonded joints such as triangular, tetragonal, pentagonal, hexagonal as well as elliptical joints were manufactured in order to give partial mechanical characteristics to the adhesively bonded tubular joints. These joints were tested both in static and fatigue modes. From the experimental investigations, it was found that the fatigue strength of the circular adhesively bonded joints was much dependent on the arithmetical average surface roughness of the adherends and the polygonal adhesively bonded joints had better fatigue strength characteristics than the circular adhesively bonded joints.

  • 본 논문에서는 항공기 구조용 탄소 복합재 단일겹침 접착 체결부에서, 파손하중에 영향을 미치는 주요인자들의 효과를 실험으로 연구하였다. 실험을 위해 제작공정 4가지, 겹침 길이 5가지, 모재 두께 4가지에 대한 시편 총 335개를 제작하였다. 예상대로 겹침길이가 감소할수록, 모재두께가 증가할수록 파손강도가 높아지는 것을 확인하였다. 그러나 제작공정의 측면에서는, 접착제가 없는 일체성형 시편과 이차접착 시편의 강도가 동시접착이나 접착제를 사용한 일체성형 시편에서보다 높은 파손강도를 보이는 흥미로운 사실을 발견하였다. 특히 이차접착 시편의 강도가 일체성형 시편의 강도와 유사하거나 더 높은 현상을 발견하였는데, 이는 접착제의 강도가 모재의 층간강도보다 높거나 최소한 비슷한 수준임을 의미하는 것으로 볼 수 있다.

  • The adhesive bonded single-lap joint is due to its intrinsic load eccentricity problem, severe peel stresses concentration occur at both end of the joint. In this paper, new lap-joint is designed to avoid the singular peel stress, and to compare the stresses of the middle adhesive layer between the single-lap joint and the wavy-lap joint. Two adherend lay-up, i.e., [90/0/90/0]$_{2s}$ and [0/90/0/90]$_{2s}$ were consider in the study.
