Magnesium alloy shows strong anisotropy and asymmetric behavior in tension and compression curve, especially at room temperature. These characteristics limit the application of finite element method (FEM) which is based on conventional continuum mechanics. To accurately predict the material behavior of magnesium alloy at microstructural level, a methodology of fully coupled multiscale simulation is presented and a crystal plasticity model as a constitutive equation in the simulation of metal forming process is introduced in this study. The existing constitutive equation for rigid plastic FEM is modified to accommodate deviatoric stress component and its derivatives with respect to strain rate components. Viscoplastic self-consistent (VPSC) polycrystal model was selected as a constitutive model because it was regarded as the most robust model compared to Taylor model or Sachs model. Stiffness matrix and load vector were derived based on the new approach and implemented into $DEFORM^{TM}-3D$ via a user subroutine handling stiffness matrix at an elemental level. The application to extrusion and rolling process of pure magnesium is presented in this study to assess the validity of the proposed multiscale process.
Jacket-type offshore structures are always exposed to severe environmental conditions such as salt, high speed of current, wave, and wind compared with other onshore structures. In spite of the importance of maintaining the structural integrity for an offshore structure, there are few cases to apply a structural health monitoring (SHM) system in practice. The impedance-based SHM is a kind of local SHM techniques and to date, numerous techniques and algorithms have been proposed for local SHM of real-scale structures. However, it still requires a significant challenge for practical applications to compensate unknown environmental effects and to extract only damage features from impedance signals. In this study, the impedance-based SHM was carried out on a 1/20-scaled model of an Uldolmok current power plant structure in Korea under changes in temperature and transverse loadings. Principal component analysis (PCA)-based approach was applied with a conventional damage index to eliminate environmental changes by removing principal components sensitive to them. Experimental results showed that the proposed approach is an effective tool for long-term SHM under significant environmental changes.

This paper presents a practical approach to evaluate the reliability indices of electric distribution systems. The use of reliability evaluation is placed with framework of distribution system planning and operation. In this paper, the reliability model is based on an analytical method, connecting component failure to load point outage in each section. Five cases are reported in the paper to study the effect of varying failure rates and repair times on real distribution systems. Simulations are preformed by the developed reliability evaluation program.
Based on Trifuilac's empirical model to transform earthquake acceleration time history in the time domain into Fourier amplitude spectrum in the frequency domail an earthquake scaling technique for simulating the earthquake record of certain magnitude as the required magnitude earthquake was suggested. Also, using the earthquake record of magni dude(M) 5.8, the simulated earthquake of magnitude(M) 8.0 was established and its application to dynamic testing system was proposed. The earthquake scaling technique could be considered by several terms : earthquake magnitude(M), earthquake intensity(MMI), epicentral distance, recording site conditions, component direction and confidence level required by the analysis. Albo, it had an application to the various earthquake records. The simulated earthquake in this study was established by two orthogonal horizontal components of earthquake acceleration-time history. The simulated earthquake shaking could be applied to the dynamic pile load test for the model tension pile and the model compressive open -ended piles driven into the pressure chamber. In the static pile load test, behavior of two piles was very different and after model tension pile experienced 2 or 3 successive slips of the pile relative to the soil, it was failed completely. During the simulated earthquake shaking, dynamic behavior and pile capacity degradation of two piles were very different.
Microgrids offer several reliability benefits, such as the improvement of load-point reliability and the opportunity for reliability-differentiated services. The primary goal of this work is to investigate the impacts of operating condition on the reliability index for microgrid system. It relies on a component failure rate model which quantifies the relationship between component failure rate and state variables. Some parameters involved are characterized by subjective uncertainty. Thus, fuzzy numbers are introduced to represent such parameters, and an optimization model based on Fuzzy Chance Constrained Programming (FCCP) is established for reliability index calculation. In addition, we present a hybrid algorithm which combines scenario enumeration and fuzzy simulation as a solution tool. The simulations in a microgrid test system show that reliability indices without considering operating condition can often prove to be optimistic. We also investigate two groups of situations, which include the different penetration levels of microsource and different confidence levels. The results support the necessity of considering operating condition for achieving accurate reliability evaluation.
Transporting agricultural products and the other material by the two-wheel-tractor (power-tiler)and trailer system may be one of its most widely used farming functions. The safety and hitching load for all the previaling performing conditions may be the general concern over the operation of the tiller-trailer system. In this study, a mathematical model to determine the static and dynamic forces excerting on the hitch point were developed . Based on the analysis of the model and the field measurements. the limiting hitching load and critical slope were analyzed. The results of the study are summarized as follows ; 1) The limit angle of slope land for the safety steering that two-wheel tractor-single axle trailer system was able to transport agricultural products was the direct angle (${\gamma}$) = 8 ; the cross angle$\beta$) 15 ; and it was decreased in accordance with the increase of carrying load ($W_4). 2) The critical velocity for safe operation in case of running on downward hill road was about 1.08m/sec. 3) The limiting carrying load for the safe steering was W$_4$=600kg. The degree of the safe steering for different braking methods was given in order as follows ; Simulataneous braking the tractor and trailer , braking the trailer only, and braking tractor only. 4) Among the three components of impact loads excerting on the hitch point, the component in the lateral direction ($P_{Vy}$) was near zero in spite of increase of hitching load ($W_4) , while the components in the other two mutually perpedicular directions ($P_{Vx}$ and ($P_{Vz}$) ) had larger values in horizontal plane than those in the slope lands. 5) Moment of forces on the lateral direction (M$y$) had the largest value among the three components of impact moment acting on the hitch point, however all the components were sharply increased in accordance with the increase of hitching loads ($W_4. Three components of the moment were the negative values.
To research the dynamic response of the high-rise structure under the rocking ground motion, which we believed that the effect cannot be ignored, especially accompanied by vertical ground motion. Theoretical analysis and shaking table seismic simulation tests were used to study the response of a high-rise structure to excitation of a H-V-R ground motion that included horizontal, vertical, and rocking components. The use of a wavelet analysis filtering technique to extract the rocking component from data for the primary horizontal component in the first part, based on the principle of horizontal pendulum seismogram and the use of a wavelet analysis filtering technique. The dynamic equation of motion for a high-rise structure under H-V-R ground motion was developed in the second part, with extra P-△ effect due to ground rocking displacement was included in the external load excitation terms of the equation of motion, and the influence of the vertical component on the high-rise structure P-△ effect was also included. Shaking table tests were performed for H-V-R ground motion using a scale model of a high-rise TV tower structure in the third part, while the results of the shaking table tests and theoretical calculation were compared in the last part, and the following conclusions were made. The results of the shaking table test were consistent with the theoretical calculation results, which verified the accuracy of the theoretical analysis. The rocking component of ground motion significantly increased the displacement of the structure and caused an asymmetric displacement of the structure. Thus, the seismic design of an engineering structure should consider the additional P-△ effect due to the rocking component. Moreover, introducing the vertical component caused the geometric stiffness of the structure to change with time, and the influence of the rocking component on the structure was amplified due to this effect.

This paper aims to evaluate the conservatism in the design of APR1400 (Advanced Pressurized water Reactor 1400 designed by KHNP) reactor internals component, the LSS (Lower Support Structure). Re-engineering of the LSS is done based on the system design condition data and applicable ASME code that was used for the original APR1400 design. Systems engineering approach is applied to design the LSS of APR1400 without refering APR1400 LSS dimensional parameters and tries to verify important design parameters of APR1400 LSS as well as the validity of the re-engineering design process as independent verification method of reactor component design. Systems engineering approach applied in this study following V-model approach. The re-engineered LSS design showed more than enough conservatism for static loading case. The maximum deflection of LSS is under 1mm (calculated value is 0.25mm) from 4000 mm diameter of LSS. Hence the deflection can be ignored in other reactor internals for structural integrity assessment. Especially the effect of LSS deflection on fuel assembly can be minimized and which is one of the main requirements of LSS design. It also showed that the maximum stress intensity is 2.36MPa for the allowable stress intensity of 60.1 MPa. The stress resulted from the static load is also very small compared to the maximum allowable stress intensity, hence there is more than enough conservatism in the LSS design.
When railway vehicles run by towers of long span bridges, the railway vehicles might experience a sudden load-off and load-on phenomenon in crosswind conditions. To ensure the running safety of the railway vehicles and the running comfort of the passengers, some studies were carried out to investigate the impacts of sudden changes of aerodynamic loads on moving railway vehicles. In the present study, the aerodynamic coefficients which were measured in wind tunnel tests using a moving train model are converted into the aerodynamic coefficients in the actual scale. The three-component aerodynamic loads are calculated based on the aerodynamic coefficients with consideration of the vehicle movement. A three-dimensional railway vehicle model is set up using the multibody dynamic theory, and the aerodynamic loads are treated as the inputs of excitation varied with time for kinetic simulations of the railway vehicle. Thus the dynamic responses of the railway vehicle passing by the bridge tower can be obtained from the kinetic simulations in the time domain. The effects of the mean wind speeds and the rail track positions on the running performance of the railway vehicle are discussed. The three-component aerodynamic loads on the railway vehicle are found to experience significant sudden changes when the vehicle passes by the bridge tower. Correspondingly, such sudden changes of aerodynamic loads have a large impact on the dynamic performance of the running railway vehicle. The dynamic responses of the railway vehicle have great fluctuations and significant sudden changes, which is adverse to the running safety and comfort of the railway vehicle passing by the bridge tower in crosswind conditions.
The focus of this paper is to develop an analytical approach based on an efficient shear deformation theory with stretching effect for bending stress analysis of cross-ply laminated composite plates subjected to transverse parabolic load and line load by using a new kinematic model, in which the axial displacements involve an undetermined integral component in order to reduce the number of unknowns and a sinusoidal function in terms of the thickness coordinate to include the effect of transverse shear deformation. The present theory contains only five unknowns and satisfies the zero shear stress conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using any shear correction factors. The governing differential equations and its boundary conditions are derived by employing the static version of principle of virtual work. Closed-form solutions for simply supported cross-ply laminated plates are obtained applying Navier's solution technique, and the numerical case studies are compared with the theoretical results to verify the utility of the proposed model. Lastly, it can be seen that the present outlined theory is more accurate and useful than some higher-order shear deformation theories developed previously to study the static flexure of laminated composite plates.
