  • A series of tests in an ice tank was carried out using a model-scale ship to investigate the ice loading process. The ship model Uikku was mounted on a rigid carriage and towed through a level ice field in the ice tank of the Marine Technology Group at Aalto University. The carriage speed and ice thickness were varied. In this paper, ice loading process was described and the corresponding ice forces on the horizontal plane were analysed. A new method is proposed to decompose different ice force components from the total ice forces measured in the model tests. This analysis method is beneficial to understanding contributions of each force component and modelling of ice loading on hulls. The analysed experimental results could be used for comparison with further numerical simulations.

  • EG/AD/S type model ice was originally selected as the primary model ice material for the MOERI ice tank in Korea. The existence of a sugar component in the EG/AD/S mixture may cause a serious maintenance problem. In order to understand the influence of sugar in the original model ice, a series of tests with EG/AD/S and EG/AD model ices were performed, and their material properties compared. Because the target strength of model ice in the full-scale MOERI ice tank is expensive and difficult to control, tests were performed under cold room conditions using a miniature ice tank. This paper describes the material properties of EG/AD/S and EG/AD model ices, such as flexural strength, compressive strength and elastic modulus. In order to obtain the desired strength and stiffness levels for the model ice, a warm-up process was introduced.

  • In spite of unparalleled combination of essential material properties for brake linings and clutch facings, replacement for asbestos is seriously called for since it is a health hazard. Once asbestos is replaced with other material then composition and properties of brake pad changes. In certain cases hardness of the material may be high enough to affect the rotor material. In this study, hardness of the brake pad has been controlled using suitable reinforcement materials like glass, carbon and Kevlar pulp. Brake pad formulations were made using CNSL (cashew net shell liquid) modified phenolic resin as a binder, graphite or cashew dust as a friction modifier and barium sulphate, talc and wollastonite as fillers. Influence of each component on the hardness value has been studied and a proper formulation has been arrived at to obtain hardness values around 35 on Scleroscopic scale. Friction and wear properties of the respective brake pad materials have been measured on a dynamometer and their performance was evaluated.

  • A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is well known as a measurement and analysis equipment in nano technology, being widely used as a crucial one in measuring objects or analyzing chemical components. It is equipped with an electron optical system that consists of an electron beam source, electromagnetic lenses, and a detector. The present work concerns numerical analysis for the electron optical system so as to facilitate design of each component. Through the numerical analysis, we investigate trajectories of electron beams emitted from a nano-scale field emission tip, and compare the result with that of experimental observations. Effects of various components such as electromagnetic lenses and an aperture are also discussed.

  • The childhood reading and physical environments are an important factor for shaping personality and values established. Therefore, We have to provide a quality environment for correct reading habits to children. the purpose of this study is to provide a basic interior data through the analysis of case study. for this purpose this study has analyzed of 5 children's reading room of public libraries built in Seoul since 2000. especially the research which it analyzed these reading room of forms of space, furniture, color, finish material, lighting. the results of this study are follows : Chairs and desks were not considered of children's scale or uniformly made. compositions of convenient facilities has insufficient component. finish material and lighting plan is similar to adults reading room plan. To give correct reading habits and interest to children, considered space design is necessary.

  • A five-level VSI(Voltage Source Inverter) is introduced as a SVC(Static Vu Compensator) like a large scale power source. The problems in using SVC are that the power device can easily be destroyed by voltage unbalance and accurate reactive power control is difficult because of voltage variation. A asymmetrical PAM(Pulse Amplitude Modulation) switching pattern is proposed to solve this problem and analyze both fundamental component and harmonic current in the system. Through experimental results of 3.5 kVA experimental test system, It is confirmed that DC capacitor voltage can be controlled by asymmetrical PAM switching pattern control.

  • In order to analyze the dynamic characteristics of ground impedance in large grounding system for lightning and surge protections, a novel method for measuring the ground impedance as a function of frequency was proposed. The experiments were carried out in the grounding system composed of ground rods and mesh grids. The test current was injected by the variable frequency inverter whose frequency is linearly controlled in the range of $5{\sim}500$kHz. The ground impedance and frequency response of the grounding system were mainly caused by the inductive current flowing through grounding conductors over the frequency of 2002. In the combined grounding system of rods and mesh grids, inductive component of ground impedance was significantly decreased. It was fumed out that the grounding system is effective for the surge protection.

  • The coherent flamelet model(CFM) is applied to symmetric counterflow turbulent premixed flames. The flame source term is set proportional to the turbulence intensity to reproduce the experimental correlation of Abdel-Gayed et al. for the turbulent burning velocity. Flame quenching by the turbulent rate of strain is modeled by an additional multiplication factor to the flame source term. A modified form of CFM is employed to consider coexistence of burned and unburned premixture with ambient air. The predicted flame position and turbulent flow field coincide well with the experimental data of Kostiuk et al., although there is some discrepancy in the radial rms velocity component and integral length scale near the symmetric plane.

  • In this paper, we propose an intelligent method to surveil moving objects and to judge an unusual-behavior by using network cameras. To surveil moving objects, the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) algorithm is used to characterize the feature information of objects. To judge unusual-behaviors, the virtual human skeleton is used to extract the feature points of a human in input images. In this procedure, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) improves the accuracy of the feature vector and the fuzzy classifier provides the judgement principle of unusual-behaviors. Finally, the experiment results show the effectiveness and the feasibility of the proposed method.
