A hybrid system combining renewable technologies with diesel generators is a promising solution for rural electrification. Myanmar has many renewable energy resources, and many regions that cannot be supplied with electricity from the main grid. Therefore, in this study, we select a village in Myanmar, which is located far away from the substation, and evaluate the economic feasibility of a hybrid system for the village considering the specific local conditions and resource availability. We consider a hybrid system composed of a photovoltaic source, diesel generator, battery energy storage system, and converter. The load profiles of the household data from the village, and the solar radiation profiles are determined. The advantages of the hybrid system, in terms of cost, reliability, and environmental effects are analyzed through simulations using commercial software. The simulation results show that, for the selected village in Myanmar, a hybrid system with battery energy storage can reduce the cost and greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining reliability. We also obtain an optimized design in terms of the component size for the selected hybrid system with battery energy storage.

In complex and large-scale industries, properly designed fault detection and identification (FDI) systems considerably improve safety, reliability and availability of target processes. In thermal power plants (TPPs), generating units operate under very dangerous conditions; system failures can cause severe loss of life and property. In this paper, we propose a bagged auto-associative kernel regression (AAKR)-based FDI approach for steam boilers in TPPs. AAKR estimates new query vectors by online local modeling, and is suitable for TPPs operating under various load levels. By combining the bagging method, more stable and reliable estimations can be achieved, since the effects of random fluctuations decrease because of ensemble averaging. To validate performance, the proposed method and comparison methods (i.e., a clustering-based method and principal component analysis) are applied to failure data due to water wall tube leakage gathered from a 250 MW coal-fired TPP. Experimental results show that the proposed method fulfills reasonable false alarm rates and, at the same time, achieves better fault detection performance than the comparison methods. After performing fault detection, contribution analysis is carried out to identify fault variables; this helps operators to confirm the types of faults and efficiently take preventive actions.
The need for network security is being increasing due to the development of information communication and internet technology, In this paper, firewall models, operating system models and other network component models are constructed. Each model Is defined by basic or compound model using MODSIM III. In this simulation environment with representative attacks, the following attacks are generated, SYN flooding and Smurf attack as an attack type of denial of service. The simulation is performed with the models that exploited various security policies against these attacks. In addition, the results of the simulation show that the analysis of security performance according to various security policies, and the analysis of correlation between availability and confidentiality according to security empowerment.

The safety of nuclear power plants has received much attention; this safety largely depends on the continuous availability of electrical energy source during all modes of nuclear power plant operation. A station blackout (SBO) describes the loss of the off-site electric power, the failure of the emergency diesel generators, and the unavailability of the alternate AC (AAC) power. Consequently, all systems that are AC powered such as the safety injection, shutdown cooling, component cooling water, and essential service water systems are unavailable. The aim of this study is to investigate the deficiencies of the existing alternatives for coping with an extended SBO for APR1400 design. The method is analyzing the existing deficiencies and proposing an optimal solution for the NPP design during the extended SBO. This study, established a new passive system, called passive decay heat removal system (PDHRS), using systems engineering approach.

There have been many considerations to develop new content services that integrate a variety of contents databases being already constructed and then produce new content services which are more valuable than existing services in many applications such as Internet portal, EC, and CRM. By doing the above thing, the burden of searching databases to access interesting databases and service applications can be reduced and the database availability of users is also enhanced through a single view integrating multiple contents database. This paper presents implementation details of the query processing system that is a core component of the database integration system, which can construct a virtual database that integrates databases being managed by multiple heterogeneous database systems using XML data model and support a quay facility on the integrated database.

The aviation gas turbine is composed of many expensive and highly precise parts and operated in high pressure and temperature gas. When breakdown or performance deterioration occurs due to the hostile environment and component degradation, it severely influences the aircraft operation. Recently to minimize this problem the third generation of predictive maintenance known as condition based maintenance has been developed. This method not only monitors the engine condition and diagnoses the engine faults but also gives proper maintenance advice. Therefore it can maximize the availability and minimize the maintenance cost. The advanced gas turbine health monitoring method is classified into model based diagnosis (such as observers, parity equations, parameter estimation and Gas Path Analysis (GPA)) and soft computing diagnosis (such as expert system, fuzzy logic, Neural Networks (NNs) and Genetic Algorithms (GA)). The overview shows an introduction, advantages, and disadvantages of each advanced engine health monitoring method. In addition, some practical gas turbine health monitoring application examples using the GPA methods and the artificial intelligent methods including fuzzy logic, NNs and GA developed by the author are presented.
Nutrient availability is a critical component of agroecosystems, and is relevant to both above- and below- ground interactions. The principal objective of this study was to determine how the cessation of fertilization affects the communities of weeds and soil organisms in a corn/wheat field. Changes in dominant weed species, substrate-induced respiration, and the population density of nematodes and microarthropods were evaluated. Microbial substrate-induced respiration (SIR) and the population density of microarthropods decreased following the cessation of fertilization and were partly correlated with the aboveground weed biomass. The cessation of organic fertilizer application but continuing application of inorganic fertilizer reduced the population density of nematodes. In response to the cessation of fertilization, weed communities were dominated by species with little dependency on fertilization. Amaranthus retroflexus was identified as the most dominant species in the corn field; however, it was replaced by Digitaria ciliaris after the cessation of fertilization. In the wheat field, the cessation of fertilization led to a rapid reduction in the biomass of most weeds, except for Vicia angustifolia, supposedly as the result of symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Additionally, the fact that weed biomass was partially correlated with SIR or the population density of microarthropods may reflect a mutual feedback between soil organisms and weeds. The results indicate that the cessation of fertilization alters communities of weeds and soil organisms through changes in weed biomass and interactions with symbiotic microorganisms.
Common-cause failure (CCF) events can significantly impact the availability of safety systems of nuclear power plants. For this reason, the International Common Cause Data Exchange (ICDE) project was initiated by several countries in 1994. Since 1997 it has been operated within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)/Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) framework and has successfully been operated over six consecutive terms (the current term being 2015-2017). The ICDE project allows multiple countries to collaborate and exchange CCF data to enhance the quality of risk analyses, which include CCF modeling. As CCF events are typically rare, most countries do not experience enough CCF events to perform meaningful analyses. Data combined from several countries, however, have yielded sufficient data for more rigorous analyses. The ICDE project has meanwhile published 11 reports on the collection and analysis of CCF events of specific component types (centrifugal pumps, emergency diesel generators, motor operated valves, safety and relief valves, check valves, circuit breakers, level measurement, control rod drive assemblies, and heat exchangers) and two topical reports. This paper presents recent activities and lessons learnt from the data collection and the results of topical analysis on emergency diesel generator CCF impacting entire exposed population.
