Various silanes, amino silane, vinyl silane, TESPD, and ZS (TESPD/zinc soap complex), are added into chlorinated isobutylene-isoprene copolymer (CIIR)/hard clay/carbon black (CB) compound and they are investigated with respect to the vulcanization characteristics, the processability, and the mechanical properties. In hard clay/CB filled system, only ZS silane added compound shows both lower Mooney viscosity and extrusion torque while vinyl silane added compound showed only a lower extrusion torque. All the ZS added compounds showed the lowest viscosity among them. The silane added compounds showed an increased modulus. In 'fatigue to failure' count test, the ZS added compound showed superior counts compared to other silane (amino, vinyl, TESPD) added compounds. The mechanical properties were significantly increased when the S2 and ZS were added into CIIR/hard clay/CB compound. The ZS added compounds showed a significant improvement on elongation modulus.

Viscosities of $LaCl_3-NaCl$ binary melts were measured by the capillary method over the range of their liquidus temperatures to about 1200K. The cell constant were determined by using pure water. The results obtained are summerized as follows: Viscosities were decreased with the content of NaCl for all over the composition range of binary melts. Composition - viscosity relation for the binary melts show a non-linear from the additivity line and the deviations shows a maximum at about 60 mol% NaCl. This suggests the existence of the complex ion of $LaCl_4^-$ in the melt. Activation energy for viscous flow of the binary melts decrease monotonously with the increasing content of NaCl.

The steady and dynamic shear rheological properties of traditional kochujang fermented at three different temperatures (20${^circ}C$, 25${^circ}C$ and 30${^circ}C$) were studied. Flow of kochujang samples showed time dependence, which was quantitatively described by the Weltman model, Kochujang samples were highly shear thinning fluids (n=0.25~0.27) with large magnitudes of Casson yield stresses (1.09~1.21 kPa). Consistency index (K) and apparent viscosity (${\eta}_{a,20}$) increased with increase in fermentation temperature of kochujang. Storage (G') and loss (G") moduli increased with increase in frequency (ω), while complex viscosity (${\eta}^{\ast}$) decreased. Based on dynamic shear data, kochujang samples exhibit structural properties similar to weak gels. The complex and steady shear viscosities at different fermentation temperatures followed the Cox-Merz superposition rule with the application of the shift factor (a=0.011~0.016).
A topological theory has been introduced to evaluate the degree of complexation and the viscosity of polymer complexes by extending the theory of Iliopoulos and Audebert for aqueous polymer solutions. The previous theory of Iliopoulos and Audebert has offered only a semiquantitative theoretical model for polymer complex systems, whereas our present work gives a general theoretical model applicable to all the polymer complex systems. Their theories considered only the physical property term caused by the displacement of complexed points between polymer solute chains, while our theory deals with all the physical effects, caused by the displacement of complexed points entangled points in polymer solute chains. There have been predicted the characteristics of physical properties from the expression. It is exposed that the predictive values show good agreement with the experimental data for polymer complexes.
The curing characteristics of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) as a curing agent were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheometrics mechanical spectrometry (RMS), and dielectric analysis (DEA). The isothermal curing kinetics measured by DSC were well represented with the generalized auto-catalytic reaction model. With the temperature sweep, the inverse relationship between complex viscosity measured by RMS and ionic conductivity obtained from DEA was established indicating that the mobility of free ions represented by the ionic conductivity in DEA measurement and the chain segment motion as revealed by the complex viscosity measured from RMS are equivalent. From isothermal curing measurements at several different temperatures, the ionic conductivity contribution was shown to be dominant in the dielectric loss factor at the early stage of cure. The contribution of the dipole relaxation in dielectric loss factor became larger as the curing further proceeded. The critical degrees of cure, at which the dipolar contribution in the dielectric loss factor starts to appear, increases as isothermal curing temperature is increased. The dielectric relaxation time at the same degree of cure was shorter for a sample cured at higher curing temperature.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of monomer and filler compositions on the rheological properties related to the handling characteristics of resin composites. Methods. Resin matrices that Bis-GMA as base monomer was blended with TEGDMA as diluent at various ratio were mixed with the Barium glass (0.7 um and 1.0 um), 0.04 um fumed silica and 0.5 um round silica. All used fillers were silane treated. In order to vary the viscosity of experimental composites, the type and content of incorporated fillers were changed, Using a rheometer, a steady shear test and a dynamic oscillatory shear test were used to evaluate the viscosity ($\eta$) of resin matrix, and the storage shear modulus (G'), the loss shear modulus (G"), the loss tangent ($tan{\delta}$) and the complex viscosity (${\eta}^*$) ofthe composites as a function of frequency ${\omega}{\;}={\;}0.1-100{\;}rad/s$. To investigate the effect of temperature on the viscosity of composites, a temperature sweep test was also undertaken. Results. Resin matrices were Newtonian fluid regardless of diluent concentration and all experimental composites exhibited pseudoplastic behavior with increasing shear rate. The viscosity of composites was exponentially increased with increasing filler volume%. In the same filler volume, the smaller the fillers were used, the higher the viscosities were. The effect of filler size on the viscosity was increased with increasing filler content. Increasing filler content reduced $tan{\delta}$ by increasing the G' further than the G". The viscosity of composites was decreased exponentially with increasing temperature.
The objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between steady shear flow (nonlinear behavior) and dynamic viscoelastic (linear behavior) properties for concentrated polymer solutions. Using both an Advanced Rheometic Expansion System(ARES) and a Rheometics Fluids Spectrometer (RFS II), the steady shear flow viscosity and the dynamic viscoelastic properties of concentrated poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO), polyisobutylene(PIB), and polyacrylamide(PAAm) solutions have been measured over a wide range of shear rates and angular frequencies. The validity of some previously proposed relationships was compared with experimentally measured data. In addition, the effect of solution concentration on the applicability of the Cox-Merz rule was examined by comparing the steady flow viscosity and the magnitude of the complex viscosity Finally, the applicability of the Cox-Merz rule was theoretically discussed by introducing a nonlinear strain measure. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) Among the previously proposed relationships dealt with in this study, the Cox-Merz rule implying the equivalence between the steady flow viscosity and the magnitude of the complex viscosity has the best validity. (2) For polymer solutions with relatively lower concentration, the steady flow viscosity is higher than the complex viscosity. However, such a relation between the two viscosities is reversed for highly concentrated polymer solutions. (3) A nonlinear strain measure is decreased with increasing stran magnitude, after reaching the maximum value in small strain range. This behavior is different from the theoretical prediction demonstrating the shape of a damped oscillatory function. (4) The applicability of the Cox-Merz rule is influenced by the $\beta$ value, which indicates the slope of a nonlinear stain measure (namely, the degree of nonlinearity) at large shear deformations. The Cox-Merz rule shows better applicability as the $\beta$ value becomes smaller.
The role of viscosity index improver's(Ⅶ) additives for modem engine lubrication is complex. Under the condition of atmosphere or low shear rate, the characteristics of Ⅶ added lubricant is verified and quoted frequently for mathematical model of lubricant behavior. However, recent research shows that added lubricant has the characteristics of shear thinning at high shear rate condition although it performs well enough over the whole range of working temperature. At high shear rate, they show significant decrease of apparent viscosity irrespective of temperature. Many experimental researches verify that Ⅶ added lubricant shows boundary film layer formation on the solid surface as well as shear thinning effect by its polymeric molecular characteristics. The intend of our research is to verify the effects of Ⅶ from the viewpoint of continuum mechanics, because conventional Reynolds'equation with only pressure-viscosity relation cannot fully predict the lubricant behavior under the Ⅶ added condition. In these aspects, Reynolds'equation of Newtonian fluid model lacks the reflection of real fluid behavior and there is no way to explain the non-linear characteristics of Ⅶ added lubricant. In this research, we mathematically modeled the Ⅶ added lubricant behaviors which are the characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid behavior at high shear rate and boundary film formation on the solid surface. The consideration of elastic deformation in the contact region is also included in our computation and finally the converged film pressure and the film thickness with elastic deformation are obtained. The results are compared with those of Newtonian fluid model.
The two-fluid model is widely used to describe two-phase flows in complex systems such as nuclear reactors. Although the two-phase flow was successfully simulated, the standard two-fluid model suffers from an ill-posed nature. There are several remedies for the ill-posedness of the one-dimensional (1D) two-fluid model; among those, artificial viscosity is the focus of this study. Some previous works added artificial diffusion terms to both mass and momentum equations to render the two-fluid model well-posed and demonstrated that this method provided a numerically converging model. However, they did not consider mass conservation, which is crucial for analyzing a closed reactor system. In fact, the total mass is not conserved in the previous models. This study improves the artificial viscosity model such that the 1D incompressible two-fluid model is well-posed, and the total mass is conserved. The water faucet and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability flows were simulated to test the effect of the proposed artificial viscosity model. The results indicate that the proposed artificial viscosity model effectively remedies the ill-posedness of the two-fluid model while maintaining a negligible total mass error.
Poly(lactic acid)(PLA) has been modified by electron radiation in the presence of 5 phr glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to enhance the melt strength of PLA. The modified PLA was prepared by varying the dose of irradiation and was characterized by observing the thermal properties, the melt viscoelastic properties and the gel fraction. The irradiated PLA with 300 kGy in the presence of 5 phr GMA showed drastically improved complex viscosity and storage modulus properties: a complex viscosity of about 210 times higher and a storage modulus of 14500 times higher than those of virgin PLA when measured at a frequency of 0.1 rad/s. Gel fraction study revealed that a branching reaction was more dominant than a crosslinking reaction when the PLA was irradiated with less than 200 kGy.
