  • The effect of solvents on the stabilities of the $C_6H_6{\cdot}I_2$ complex and the $C_6H_6{\cdot}ICl$ complex has been investigated through ultraviolet spectrophotometric measurements. The equilibrium constants obtained at room temperature for the formation of $C_6H_6{\cdot}I_2$ complex are 0.090, 0.216 and 0.328$ lmole^{-1}$ in chloroform, cyclohexane and n-hexane, respectively. The corresponding equilibrium constants at room temperature for $C_6H_6{\cdot}ICl$ complex are 0.125, 0.676 and 0.689 $lmole^{-1}.$ These results indicate that the stabilities of the two complexes increase with decreasing dielectric constants of the solvents used, the increase in stability being more rapid in the $C_6H_6{\cdot}ICl$ complex than in the $C_6H_6{\cdot}I_2$ complex. This may support the conclusion that the dative ionic structures, $C_6H_6^+{\cdots}I_2^-$ and/or ($C_6H_6I)^+{\cdots}Cl^-,$ play important roles on the reasonance stabilization of both the $C_6H_6{\cdot}I_2$ complex and the $C_6H_6{\cdot}ICl$ complex, the roles being more important in the latter complex than in the former complex.

  • Topoisomerase I (Topo I) participates in the DNA replication, transcription, and repair. Binding of Topo I inhibitor to the Topo I-DNA cleavage complex forms stabilized ternary complex which blocks DNA religation and ultimately causes cell death. Camptothecin (CPT) and its derivatives have been among the most effective anticancer drugs by inhibition of topo I. However, efforts to synthesize non-CPT drugs have been actively going on because the CPT derivatives have several limitations such as poor solubility, short half-life, and side effects. As an indenoisoquinoline, NSC314622 is not as potent as CPT, but its chemical stability and slower reversibility of the cleavage complex made it a good lead compound. Recently, a series of indenoisoquinoline analogues were synthesized with substituted dimethoxy or methylenedioxy on the aromatic ring and alkylamino on the lactam nitrogen. Some of them showed quite good Topo I inhibitory activity. Using the computer docking program, Surflex-Dock, indenoisoquinoline analogues were docked into the human Topo I-DNA cleavable complex. The docking results showed that the compounds with activity better than NSC314622 intercalated between the -1 and +1 base pairs at the cleavage site, but those with little or no activities did not appear to intercalate. These results could be useful to design new Topo I inhibitors improved than CPT.

  • The Cu cation binding sites of $[Cu(I){\cdot}d(CpG){\cdot}d(CpG)-2H]^{-1}$ complex have been investigated to explain the $[Cu{\cdot}DNA]$ biological activity caused by the Cu association to DNA. The structure of $[Cu(I){\cdot}d(CpG){\cdot}d(CpG)-2H]^{-1}$ complex was investigated by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). The fragmentation patterns of $[Cu(I){\cdot}d(CpG){\cdot}d(CpG)-2H]^{-1}$ complex were analyzed by MS/MS spectra. In the MS/MS spectra of $[Cu(I){\cdot}d(CpG){\cdot}d(CpG)-2H]^{-1}$ complex, three fragment ions were observed with the loss of d(CpG), {d(CpG) + Cyt}, and {d(CpG) + Cyt + dR}. The Cu cation binds to d(CpG) mainly by substituting the $H^+$ of phosphate group. Simultaneously, the Cu cation prefers to bind to a guanine base rather than a cytosine base. Five possible geometries were considered in the attempt to optimize the $[Cu(I){\cdot}d(CpG){\cdot}d(CpG)-2H]^{-1}$ complex structure. The ab initio calculations were performed at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level.

  • The solubility of i-butyl bromide in nitrobenzene have been measured at 19, 25 and $40^{\circ}C$ in the presence and absence of gallium bromide. In the presence of gallium bromide, 1 : 1 complex, $i-C_4H_9Br{\cdot}GaBr_3$ is formed in the solution. The instability constant K of the complex formation was evaluated from the following equilibrium equation. $i-C_4H_9Br{\cdot}GaBr_3{\rightleftharpoons}C_4H_9Br + 1/2Ga_2Br_6.$ From these result, it seems that the stabilities of the complex formation, gallium bromide with alkyl bromide, are directly related with those of the carbonium ions of alkyl bromide.

  • A tetradentate ligand of 2-phenyl-4,6-di(pyridin-2-yl)pyrimidine (L) has been synthesized and its complexes with $ZnI_2$ and CuI have been obtained by hydrothermal method. single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that ligand L coordinates with Zn(II) ions to form a simple four-coordinate di-nuclear complex, while the complexation of L with Cu(I) constructs a one-dimensional chain polymer. The existence of $I^-$ ion hampers the L to assemble grid-type complexes with Zn(II) and Cu(I). Fluorescence spectra show that the L emits blue fluorescence while its Cu(I) polymer decrease the fluorescence intensity and Zn(II) complex quenches the fluorescence.

  • In order to determine the relationships between the lea(-burning disease and the light harvesting chlorophyll-protein (LHCP) complex in Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer, we investigated the chlorophyll-protein (CP) complex of the thylakoid membrane and its characteristics. In P. ginseng four Cp-complex bands determined by non-denaturing SDS-PAGE were identified CP I'(containing reaction center of photosystem I and LHCP I antennae), CP I (reaction center of photosystem I) LHCP II** (oligoform of LHCP II), and LHCP II (photosystem II antennae, CP 26 and CP 29) by Bassis and Dunahay's procedures. Under our experimental condition, the CP I band was only observed in P. ginseng and the band intensity of LHCP II** in P ginseng was higher than in spinach and soybean. There were differences in the absorption and fluorescence spectra and chlorophyll a/b ratio of the CP-complex bands between P. ginseng and other Plants. The Polypeptidr content of P. ginseng thylakoid was lower than in spinach and soybean thylakoid, and the Polypeptide profiles of P. ginseng was low band intensity, especially about 29-35 kD, 55 kD, and 60 kD, compared to spinach and soybean. The inhibitory effects of 2,5-dimethylfuran, specific singlet oxygen ($^1O_2$) quencher, showed that singlet oxygen destroyed 60% of chl.a, 90% of chl.b and 70% of carotenoid in bleaching P. ginseng with leaf-burning disease.

  • The formation of a charge transfer complex between various amines and organic halogen compounds was closely investigated. A mixture of amine (piperidine, pyridine, diethylamine, ethylamine, triethylamine and triethanolamine) and organic halides(carbon tetrachloride and chloroform) was checked for its UV absorption spectrum in presence of n-hexane solvent. A red shift was observed. The formation of charge transfer complex was observed in the case of triethylamine and diethylamine, whereas the formation of contact complex was distinct in case of piperidine. The relation between the nucleophilicity of amines and their tendency of forming charge transfer complex was discussed.

  • The reaction of $AgClO_{4}$ with acyclic potential tridentate N,N,N',N',N''-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (pmdeta) has given colorless crystals suitable for X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure ($P2_{1}$/n, a = 14.413(1) $\AA$, b = 25.270(2) $\AA$, c = 16.130(1) $\AA$, b = $103.012(1){^{\circ}}$, V = 5723.7(8) A$\AA^{3}$, Z = 4, R = 0.0349) has been solved and refined. Three silver(I) ions connect four pmdeta ligands to produce discrete complex of $[Ag_3(pmdeta)_4](ClO_4)_3$. A pmdeta ligand is bridged to three silver(I) ions, and three other pmdeta ligands are chelated to each silver(I) center in a tridentate mode. Thus, the product is a rare tri-nuclear silver(I) complex with two different chemical environments. $^{13}C$ NMR and $MAS\;^{13}$C NMR indicate that the tri-nuclear silver(I) complex is not rigid in solution. The contact angles and thermal analyses of the complex are measured and discussed.

  • Let ${\gamma}{\equiv}\left{{\gamma}_{ij}\right}(0{\leq}i+j{\leq}2n)$ be a collection of complex numbers with ${\gamma}_{00}>0$ and ${\gamma}_{ji}={\bar{\gamma}}_{ij}$. The truncated complex moment problem for ${\gamma}$ entails finding a positive Borel measure ${\mu}$ supported in the complex plane ${\mathbb{C}}$ such that ${\gamma}_{ij}={\int}{\bar{z}}^{i}z^jd{\mu}(z)(0{\leq}i+j{\leq}2n)$. We solve this truncated moment problem with data in a circle and discuss the behavior of data in an extended moment matrix.
