  • Aerobic night-soil treatment effluent containing high concentration of ammonia nitrogen was treated to remove nitrogen using Bardenpho process with Methanol addition. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of complete nitrogen removal at three different HRTs such as 6.25d, 5d, and 3.75d, respectively. At each HRT, the nitrogen removal efficiencies are 92%, 99% and 97% and the required amount of methanol are 3.05gMeOH/gN, 2.75gMeOH/gN, and 3.38gMeOH/gN, respectively. Specific nitrification rates are decreased proportional to HRT and are $0.022gNH_4^+-N/g\;MLVSS{\cdot}day$, $0.0332gNH_4^+-N/g\;MLVSS{\cdot}day$ and $0.051gNH_4^+-N/g\;MLVSS{\cdot}day$ and specific denitification rate are decreased proportional to HRT and are $0.0210g\;N/gMLVSS{\cdot}day$, $0.0330g\;N/gMLVSS{\cdot}day$ and $0.0525g\;N/gMLVSS{\cdot}day$, respectively.

  • This study represents that a removal efficiency of organic matters in wastewater is activated by a sludge process using new mixed microbial population. In case of mixed microorganisms, removal rates of suspended solid (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were over 90 percent under experimental condition, and removal efficiency of organic matters, sludge density index (SDI) and capillary suction time (CST) in mixed population were higher than that in not-mixed microorganism, while total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total phosphorus (T-P) which indicate a degree of eutrophication were removed easily in both case. From these results, we may propose that an application of the mixed microbial population is useful to treat domestic wastewater including a great deal of organic matters.

  • This study investigated the purification process of groundwater contaminated with zinc and arsenic using a permeable reactive barrier with a zero-valent iron/pumice mixture. We determined the removal rates of the contaminants for 30 days. In this study, column reactor filled with the zero-valent iron/pumice reactive mixture was used. Experimental results showed that the mixture exhibited an almost complete removal of the zinc and arsenic ions. Arsenic was removed via co-precipitation and adsorption processes while zinc ions were asorbed in active sites. The purification process of water from the metal ionscontinued for 30 days with constant hydraulic conductivity because of the enhanced porosity of the pumice and interparticle distance between the zero-valent iron and pumice. Contaminants removal rates and the remediation mechanism for each reactive system are described in this paper.

  • Treatment and reuse of industrial wastewater is becoming a major goal due to water scarcity. This may be carried out using membrane separation technology in general and reverse osmosis (RO) in particular. In the current study, polyamide (FT-30) membrane was employed for treatment of wastewater obtained from Faraman industrial zone based in Kermanshah (Iran). The effects of operating conditions such as transmembrane pressure, cross flow velocity, temperature and time on water flux and rejection of impurities including COD by the membrane were elucidated. The aim was an improvement in membrane performance. The results indicate that most of the chemical substances are removed from the wastewater. In particular COD removal was increased from 64 to around 100% as temperature increased from 15 to $45^{\circ}C$. The complete COD removal was obtained at transmembrane pressure of 20 bars and cross flow velocity of 1.5 m/s. The treated wastewater may be reused for various applications including makeup water for cooling towers.

  • Impacted mandibular third molar removal is the most common procedure performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. An array of alternative procedures have been suggested, like operculectomy in cases of pericoronitis and coronectomy in certain cases. However, these procedures pose several disadvantages, and we propose a relatively non-invasive 'straight lift technique'. This technique is specifically useful in straightening abnormally positioned mesioangular third molars as a substitute of complete removal. This can improve tooth function, eliminate the need for surgical intervention, and reduce the risk of complications associated with third molar removal.

  • Persulfate (PS) activated with nanosized zero-valent iron (NZVI) was tested as a reagent to remove phenol from groundwater. Batch degradation experiments indicated that NZVI/PS molar ratios between 1 : 2 and 1 : 5 were appropriate for complete removal of phenol, and that the time required for complete removal varied with different PS and NZVI dosages. Chloride ions up to 100 mM enhanced the phenol oxidation rate, and nitrate of any concentration up to 100 mM did not significantly affect the oxidation rate. NZVI showed greater performance than ferrous iron did as an activator for PS. A by-product was formed along with phenol degradation but subsequently was completely degraded, which showed the potential to attain mineralization with the NZVI/PS system. Tests with radical quenchers indicated that sulfate radicals were a predominant radical. The results of this study suggest that NZVI is a promising activator of PS for treating contaminated groundwater.

  • Objective: Congenital dermal sinus is a rare congenital disease that results from the failure of the neuroectoderm to separate from the surface ectoderm during the process of neurulation, where there is communication between the skin and the deeper structures. Their pathogenesis, clinical course and treatment strategy are well known. We analyze our series and compare our results with other series. Methods: Twenty patients were diagnosed as congenital dermal sinus and confirmed pathologically from October 1986 to July 2003 at our hospital. We studied the patients' clinical manifestations, radiological findings and pathological profiles. Results: Seven cases were located in the suboccipital area and 13 cases were located in the spinal area. Interestingly, 4 of 13 spinal lesion cutaneous openings were located lower than the 3rd sacral body level. 8 of 20 lesions were terminated at neural structures, 4 of 20 lesions were terminated at the intradural portion and others terminated at the extradural portion. Nine anomalies were combined with the dermal sinus, including 4 lipomas, 2 Currarino's triad, 1 encephalocele, 1 myelomeningocele and 1 diastematomyelia. Eleven patients had dermoid tumors. Conclusion: Congenital Dermal Sinus must be surgically removed immediately if they are diagnosed. The surgical procedure of congenital dermal sinus is complete removal, but in some cases, complete removal is impossible. In those cases, we removed all epithelial tissues. We consider sacrococcygeal dimple almost invariably have no connection with intraspinal structures. But, if other cutaneous manifestations are combined with cutaneous pits, it can communicate with the sacrococcygeal dimple.

  • Angiography is the gold standard for the diagnosis and complete resection of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). The absence of residual AVM after surgery is commonly believed to reduce the risk of future hemorrhage. However, AVMs can recur after proven complete angiographic resection can occur, albeit rarely, especially in the pediatric population. We report a rare case of a recurrent AVM two years after complete resection in an adult patient. This case report shows that AVMs in adults can recur despite their rarity and despite postoperative angiography confirming complete removal. Moreover, in this case, the recurrent AVM involved a new feeding vessel that was not involved with the initial lesion.

  • Given a distribution of pebbles on the vertices of a connected graph G, a pebbling move is defined as the removal of two pebbles from some vertex and the placement of one of those pebbles at an adjacent vertex. The t-pebbling number, $f_t(G)$, of a connected graph G, is the smallest positive integer such that from every placement of $f_t(G)$ pebbles, t pebbles can be moved to any specified vertex by a sequence of pebbling moves. A graph G has the 2t-pebbling property if for any distribution with more than $2f_t(G)$ - q pebbles, where q is the number of vertices with at least one pebble, it is possible, using the sequence of pebbling moves, to put 2t pebbles on any vertex. In this paper, we determine the t-pebbling number for the middle graph of a complete binary tree $M(B_h)$ and we show that the middle graph of a complete binary tree $M(B_h)$ satisfies the 2t-pebbling property.
