  • A new business venture faces intense competition in a dynamic environment. To survive, new business ventures and established companies both need to generate creativity and significant new ventures to be highly competitive and have high levels of performance. In this study, we examined new business ventures that determined their competitiveness and performance generated from entrepreneurial creativity and mediated by ambidextrous innovation. This research used survey data collected from 143 Indonesian's new business shipping agencies, which was collected using an online survey and analyzed through structural equation modeling. The results showed that entrepreneurial creativity in new business ventures is positively associated with competitive advantage but not significant to create a competitive advantage. In contrast, entrepreneurial creativity is positively associated with firm performance. This result indicates that efforts to generate entrepreneurial creativity are not sufficient to create a competitive advantage despite having a significant influence on firm performance. However, entrepreneurial creativity is significantly and positively associated with firm performance and competitive advantage when mediated by ambidextrous innovation. The findings of this study suggest that the competitive advantage of a new business venture in facing intense competition in a dynamic environment condition can be overcome by generating strategic action in the form of entrepreneurial creativity and ambidextrous innovation.

  • Purpose: Based on the resource-based view and the competitive advantage theory, the study views marketing capabilities (product, pricing, delivery/inventory, and promotional support) as sources of competitive advantage (differentiation advantage and low-cost advantage) and examines their impacts on competitive advantage, which in turn, will influence non-business and business performance. Research design, data and methodology: Data were collected from 149 representatives of franchising companies in South Korea and analyzed with SmartPLS 3.3.7. Results: First, promotional support and product have a significant impact on differentiation advantage. Second, pricing and promotional support have a significant impact on low-cost advantage. Third, differentiation advantage has an influence on non-financial and financial business performance. Fourth, low-cost advantage has an impact on non-financial performance but has no significant direct impact on financial performance. Fifth, non-financial performance is related to financial performance. Finally, the result of IPMA shows that importance and performance values of exogeneous variables are different depending on firm size. Conclusions: The findings suggest that franchisors should focus on different marketing capabilities depending on their strategic focus and objectives. Finally, the findings based on an IPMA suggest that small companies perceive low-cost advantage as important, while their counterparts do not. Several theoretical and managerial implications are offered.

This research was conducted on the SMTOs located in three major cities for a tourism destination, meeting, and exhibition in East Java, Indonesia. 175 directors or managers of SMTOs were sampled using the purposive sampling technique. Data was obtained from directors or managers using a structured questionnaire. The empirical data was then analyzed by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). This study showed that market sensing capability positively and significantly affects innovation. Furthermore, competitive advantage was positively and significantly affected by market sensing capability. Although results showed that IT competence positively and significantly affects innovation, in contrast, it did not positively and significantly affect competitive advantage. These research findings suggest that market sensing capability and innovation have a substantial role in creating a competitive advantage for SMTOs facing the Revolution Industry 4.0 and a dynamic environment. Thus, innovation for SMTOs can be achieved by optimizing the role of market sensing capability and IT competency. However, this study also suggests that the capability or competence will not have any impact on competitive advantage if neither is optimized.
