  • This paper deals with the issue of motion control of a single rod cylinder-load system using simple adaptive control (SAC) method. Prior to controller design, the experiment of open-loop response has been performed. Based on it, design parameters of transfer function are obtained and used for controller design. The effect of parallel feedforward compensator has been investigated by computer simulation, suppressing the oscillatory motion. Through experiments it is conformed that the SAC method gives good tracking performance compared to the PD control method.

  • In this study, we propose a control algorithm to reduce the unbalanced characteristics of a three-phase system power caused by the unbalanced load of the AC electric railway. Then, we verify its performance through the design of a power compensator and experiments applying it. Like electric railway systems, a Scott transformer is applied, and the load and single-phase back-to-back converters are connected to the M-phase and T-phase outputs. The back-to-back converter monitors the difference in active power between the unbalanced loads in real-time and compensates for the power by using bidirectional characteristics. The active power is performed through PI control in the synchronous coordinate system, and DC link overall voltage and voltage balancing control are controlled jointly by M-phase and T-phase converters to improve the responsiveness of the system. To verify the performance of the proposed power compensation device, an experiment was performed under the condition that M-phase 5 kW and T-phase 1 kW unbalanced load. As a result of the experiment, the unbalance rate of the three-phase current after the operation of the power compensator decreases by 58.66% from 65.04% to 6.38%, and the excellent performance of the power compensator proposed in this study is verified.

  • A robust minimum-time control (RMTC) strategy is addressed and it is extended to the dual-stage servo design. Rather than conventional switching type sub-optimal controls, it is a reference following control approach where the predetermined minimum-time trajectory (MTT) is tracked by the perturbation compensator based feedback controller. First, the minimum-time trajectory for a mass-damper system is derived. Then, the perturbation compensator to achieve robust tracking performance in spite of model uncertainty and external disturbance is suggested. The RMTC is also applied to the dual-stage positioner which consists of coarse actuator and fine one. To best utilize the actuation redundancy of the dual-stage mechanism, a null-motion controller to actively regulate the relative motion between the two stages is formulated. The performance of RMTC is validated through simulation and experiment.

  • The proposed inertial measurement unit (IMU) is composed of accelerometers only. It can determine a vehicle's position and attitude, which is the Gyro-free INS. The Gyro-free INS error is deeply affected by the sensor bias, scale factor and misalignment. However, these parameters can be obtained in the laboratory. After these misalignments are corrected, the Gyro-free strap-down INS could be more accurate. This paper presents a compensator design for the strap-down six-accelerometer INS to correct misalignment. A calibration experiment is taken to get the error parameters. A simulation results show that it will decrease the INS error to enhance the performance after compensation.

  • This paper describes controller design and simulation-model development of a dynamic voltage compensator using series and shunt inverters. The control system was designed using PI controller and vector relationship between the supply voltage and load voltage. A simulation model with EMTP was developed to analyze performance of the controller and the whole system. The simulation and experiment results confirm that the dynamic compensator can restore the load voltage under the fault of the distribution system, such as single-line-ground fault, three-line-to-ground fault, and line-to-line fault.

  • This paper describes the design and fabrication of magnetic levitation kits for use in the hands on experiments of automatic control, digital control and microprocessor applications in the division of mechatronics in Samcheok university. The kits are developed inspired by MIT's design, but it is designed on the digital basis, whereas MIT's is designed on the analog basis. As a result, the kits can be monitored and controlled on the analog and digital control techniques. Furthermore, the cost of kit components is comparable or lower to that of MIT design. And the kits can be controlled with magnetic hall sensors and/or infrared sensors, which provides more versatile experience on the use of sensors and signal filtering to the students. The design is fabricated and tested by authors and will be provided to the students as lab projects. The kits will be intentionally presented with a device that is poorly instrumented and poorly compensated. And the students are expected to analyze sensor signal and controller performance, and then, perform compensator design and signal filtering.

  • Dual-stage servo system for super-high density HDD has the chances of being composed of the coarse actuator(VCM) for track-seeking control and the fine actuator(microactuator) for-following control in near future. This paper presents the concept design of dual-stage servo system and the track-following control using an electrostatic microactuator for super-high density HDD. The electrostatic microactuator is designed and fabricated by MEMS(micro-electro-mechanical system) process. Both the nonlinear plant(voltage/displacement-to-electrostatic force) and the linear plant(electrostatic force-to-displacement) of the microactuator are established. Inverse function of the nonlinear plant is employed for a feedforward nonlinear compensator design. And feedforward control effect of this compensator is shown by time-domain experiments. A track-following feedback controller is designed using the feedback nonlinear compensator which is derived from the feedforward nonlinear compensator. The track-following control experiment is done to show the control efficiency of the proposed control system. And, excellent track-following control performance(2.21kHz servo-bandwidth, 7.51dB gain margin, $50.98^{\circ}$phase margin) is achieved by the proposed control system.

  • The electrodynamic loudspeakers should have a wide dynamic range to reproduce various sound levels. When the input signal is small, the radiated sound from the loudspeaker is not so much distorted. However, for large input signal with low frequency component the radiated sound is significantly distorted due to the nonlinearities of the loudspeaker. The suspension, damping, and magnetic flux of loudspeaker are the main sources of the nonlinearity. Such electromechanical parameters related to harmonic distortion have been represented by a polynomial model for diaphragm displacement, while each of the polynomial coefficient is evaluated by using the principle of harmonic balance experimentally. Based on the polynomial model, we designed a compensator for nonlinear harmonic distortion of direct radiator loudspeaker. Than observer is used to estimate the displacement of the loudspeaker diaphragm, which is rather difficult to measure directly in the conventional setting. The usefulness of the designed compensator is demonstrated by numerical simulations. Simulation results show about 30db decrease at the second and third higher harmonic distortions. We carry out an experiment on speaker to verify designed controller and nonlinear observer.
