In order to achieve the purpose of the study, data was collected from 126 care providers in long-term care facilities in Chungbuk and Kangwon province. Data were collected with self-administrated questionnaires and analyzed by hierarchical multiple regression. Findings of this study is as follows. Firstly, attitude towards terminal care was positively affected by compassion satisfaction. Secondly, the attitude towards terminal care was negatively affected by compassion fatigue. Thirdly, the attitude towards terminal care was negatively affected by burnout. In conclusion, these findings provide strong empirical evidence for the importance of compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction and burnout in explaining attitude towards terminal care among care providers in long-term care facilities. Therefore, strategies to decrease compassion fatigue and burnout and improve compassion satisfaction are needed to improve the attitude towards terminal care among care providers in long-term care facilities.

  • Purpose. The purposed of this study was done to identify correlates and variables predicting burnout among hospital nurses. Methods. The participants were 172 nurses working in hospital nurses in D and P, K cities. Data on compassion fatigue and burnout were collected via questionnaire between May 2011 and July 2011. Data analysis was done with PASW 18.0 program and included one-way ANOVA, independent t-test, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Result. Compassion fatigue of participants in this study were shown to have high levels (compassion fatigue: M=58.34/115, SD=12.85). Burnout of participants in this study were shown to have poor levels (burnout: M=30.73/85, SD=6.84). The burnout by nurses was positively to compassion fatigue(r=.482, p<.000). The variables predicting burnout were compassion fatigue, total period of nursing job, nursing part and job period of present part. These factors accounted for 31%((F=20.39, p<.000) of the variance of burnout in hospital nurses. Conclusion. The results of this study indicate that it is necessary to reduce compassion fatigue and to encourage compassion satisfaction among hospital nurses.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a program to help emergency nurses overcome compassion fatigue, and to analyze the effects of the program. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. There were 14 participants in the experimental group and 18 subjects in the control group. The program was comprised of five, weekly 80-minute sessions including understanding and assessment of compassion fatigue, enhancing positive affect, balancing work-life, planning self care, training in relaxation techniques and cognitive restructuring, and getting social support. Research variables were ego-resiliency, compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue of the ProQOL 5, and salivary cortisol. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, independent t-test, and paired t-test. Results: The first hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for ego resiliency between the experimental group and the control group". was not supported. The second hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for compassion satisfaction between the experimental group and the control group" was supported (t=2.15, p=.046). The third hypothesis, "There will be a difference in scores for compassion fatigue between the experimental group and the control group" was not supported. Conclusion: The first program for emergency nurses to overcome compassion fatigue in Korea was effective in increasing emergency nurses' compassion satisfaction and decreasing salivary cortisol level in the experimental group. Therefore, this program for overcoming compassion fatigue is useful to increase emergency nurses' compassion satisfaction. However replication studies of short-term intensive program reflecting emergency nurses' opinion are needed.

Methods: For the research, this study collected data from August 4 to September 26 with 133 nurses who worked at emergency rooms at 3 general hospitals in Gyeonggi-do with 500 beds, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient with the SPSS 21.0 program. Results: Correlation analysis between nursing performance, compassion fatigue, and job stress demonstrated that the job stress had a significant positive correlation with compassion fatigue and nursing performance. On the other hand, there was no statistically significant correlation between compassion fatigue and nursing performance. Conclusion: The study results showed that the emergency room nurse experienced job stress due to intensive compassion fatigue and nursing performance. Thus, it is necessary to develop intervention programs to reduce job stress in emergency room nurses by alleviating compassion stress and having moderate level of nursing performance.

  • Purpose: This study is a descriptive research study to identify the relationship between the experience of verbal abuse, compassion fatigue, and work engagement among nurses in the emergency unit. Methods: Study subjects were 107 nurses working in a university hospital in Gyeonggi-Do. The instruments used were a verbal abuse checklist, a subscale of the Professional Quality of Life Scale used to measure compassion fatigue, and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS version 22.0 program for independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results: Emergency nurses experienced more verbal abuse and compassion fatigue than nurses in other departments, and the level of work engagement was low. There was a positive correlation between experience of verbal abuse and compassion fatigue and a negative correlation between both of these variables and work engagement. Particularly, verbal abuse appeared in the order of nurses, patients & caregivers, and doctors. This means there were serious problems with communication with nurses. Conclusion: In order to reduce verbal abuse, it is necessary to establish a communication culture of mutual respect between nurses, medical staff, patients & caregivers. Moreover, a compassion fatigue management program is needed to reduce emotional fatigue.
