In this paper, to quantitatively evaluate the degree of rehabilitation for the disabled of unilateral lower extremity, we compared the EMG pattern of normal and simulated abnormal gait. The EMG signal was measured at a rate of 1 kHz on the quadriceps and biceps femoris, the pressure sensor was attached to the sole in order to distinguish the gait cycle. Integrated EMG (IEMG) was obtained by the gait cycle, and classified four patterns that were the normal gait pattern, amplitude decrease pattern, reversed pattern, and irregular pattern. For comparison of the patterns, a curve fitting was performed using the trigonometric functions. The result of curve fitting, the method using a variable A that corresponds to the amplitude of the regression curve was able to distinguish the reverse pattern and remaining pattern. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) representing coincidence of the pattern of the regression curve and EMG was confirmed the biggest value at the normal gait. Therefore, the degree of normal gait can be confirmed using the coefficient of determination. This results show that it is possible to quantitatively confirm the degree of unilateral lower extremity disabled rehabilitation, and it will be contributed to the study of efficient rehabilitation methods by objective analysis.
In the rehabilitation robotic arm systems for the disabled with spinal code injury, EMG signals are used in the control of the robotic arm. EMG signals are corrupted by many kinds of noises such as ECG signal, power noise and contact noise of electrode. Noise rejection improves the performance of the EMG pattern classification. In this paper, a variable bandwidth filter (VBF) and wavelet transform are used for the noise rejection of EMG signals and the comparison of SNR is given. Also, some statistical characteristics of features are investigated.
EMG pattern recognition is essential for the control of a multifunction myoelectric hand. The main goal of this study is to develop an efficient feature projection method for EMC pattern recognition. To this end, we propose a linear supervised feature projection that utilizes linear discriminant analysis (LDA). We first perform wavelet packet transform (WPT) to extract the feature vector from four channel EMC signals. For dimensionality reduction and clustering of the WPT features, the LDA incorporates class information into the learning procedure, and finds a linear matrix to maximize the class separability for the projected features. Finally, the multilayer perceptron classifies the LDA-reduced features into nine hand motions. To evaluate the performance of LDA for the WPT features, we compare LDA with three other feature projection methods. From a visualization and quantitative comparison, we show that LDA has better performance for the class separability, and the LDA-projected features improve the classification accuracy with a short processing time. We implemented a real-time pattern recognition system for a multifunction myoelectric hand. In experiment, we show that the proposed method achieves 97.2% recognition accuracy, and that all processes, including the generation of control commands for myoelectric hand, are completed within 97 msec. These results confirm that our method is applicable to real-time EMG pattern recognition far myoelectric hand control.
Spectrum analysis of surface electromyogram (FMG) signals is an effective approach to the study of localized muscular fatigue during isometric contraction. Many investigators have con firmed the frequency of the EMG signals being lowered during sustained contaction. In this study, the cyclic loading tasks were performed, and a comparison was made for the median power frequency shift pattern of the EMG signals with the sustained contraction of the same load. The median power frequency shift of the EMG signals for the cyclic loading task was found to be a part of that for the sustained contraction. Based on this result, a new muscle fatigue index was computed by normalizing the duration of the sustained contraction. A fatigue index was obtained as a function of exertion level and the work/rest schedule. With the proposed fatigue index, it is possible to evaluate or predict the degree of muscular fatigue for a physically demanding task.
The purpose of this study was to standardize and classify the coordination pattern among the left and right masseter and anterior temporal muscles, in terms of integrated EMG values per stroke during gum chewing in normal subjects. In this study, 20 normal subjects were selected to chew a piece of gum and integrated EMG from middle portion of the masseter and anterior temporal muscles on both sides were recorded 20 times during each of the right and left chewing respectively. And the Bioelectric Processor Model EM2 (Myo-tronies Research, Inc., U.S.A.) with the surface electrodes was used to record the EMG activity during all experimental procedures. The results were as follows; 1. In all subjects, the chewing side masseter muscle was predominantly active among the four muscles examined. 2. The integrated EMG value of the middle of masseter muscle was significantly predominant than those of the anterior temporal muscle (p<0.0001) on the chewing side, but no significant predominant was observed on the nonchewing side (p<0.98). 3. In comparison with same muscles on the chewing and nonchewing side, low correlation coefficient was found between the middle of masseter muscles (R=0.317), but high correlation coefficient was found between the anterior temporal muscles (R=0.738). Between two muscles on the same side, there were significant correlation in the chewing (R=0.557) and nonchewing side (R=0.625). 4. In the coordination patterns among four muscles examined, distinct individual differences were found, but in an identical subject one fixed pattern appeared with significant reproducibility.
The aim of this study was to compare the electromyographic (EMG) activity levels of the scapular upward rotators [upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius (LT), and serratus anterior (SA)] and other scapular muscles [posterior deltoid (PD), levator scapulae (LS), and infraspinatus (IS)] during isometric lower trapezius exercises. Twenty males with no medical history of shoulder pain or upper extremity disorders were recruited for this study. EMG activity was recorded from the UT, LT, SA, PD, LS, and IS while subjects performed three different exercises: Prone arm lift (PAL), Backward rocking diagonal arm lift (BRDAL), Modified Prone Cobra (MPC). One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine any significant differences among the three exercises. A lower relative activation of UT, LT, and SA was seen with the MPC than with the other exercises (p<.05). The relatively lower activation of the UT identified, the MPC exercise as the preferred choice for preferential strengthening the LT (p<.05). However, a higher activation in the PD, LS, and IS occurred with the MPC than with the other exercises (p>.05). The recruitment pattern of synergist varied depending on the exercise posture. These findings suggest that exercise posture is an important factor in the selection of strengthening exercise for weak muscle.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of leg muscle activation by applying proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) arm patterns to unilateral upper extremities under the condition of both open and closed kinetic chains in a seated position. Methods: Twenty-two healthy subjects participated in this study. Four PNF patterns were applied to each subject's unilateral upper extremity. EMG data were collected from the vastus medialis, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius. The measured EMG data were digitized and processed to root mean square (RMS) and expressed as percentage maximal voluntary isometric contraction (%MVIC). The data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures to determine the statistical significance. Results: The results of this study were summarized as follows: Firstly, in comparison to muscle activation of the biceps femoris, there was a significant increase in the D2 flexion pattern when it was compared with D2 extension pattern and when it was compared with D1 flexion pattern (p<.05). Secondly, there was a significant increase in the muscle activation of the vastus medialis and tibialis anterior with a closed kinetic chain rather than an open kinetic chain (p<.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, in order to increase muscle activation of the biceps femoris, the D2 flexion pattern can be applied, regardless of kinetic chain. In addition, in order to increase muscle activation of the vastus medialis and tibialis anterior, four arm patterns can be applied with a closed kinetic chain.
Purpose: The present study aims to investigate the effects of a diagonal exercise pattern on selective activation of the upper extremity muscles using both normalization and isolation methods. Methods: In total, 17 asymptomatic subjects participated in this study. During the two diagonal patterns of exercise (diagonals 1 and 2), muscular activities of the upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius (LT), serratus anterior (SA), anterior deltoid (AD), and infraspinatus (IS) were measured. The collected data were analyzed in two ways, according to the dominance of muscle activities (%Isolation) and according to normalized activities (%MVIC). Results: There were significant differences in LT, SA, AD, and IS between %MVIC and %Isolation (p<0.05), and the diagonal 1 pattern of exercise showed significantly more LT activities compared with the diagonal 2 pattern (p<0.05). Further, except for LT, there were no significant differences in muscle activities between the diagonal 1 and 2 exercises. Conclusion: The present study suggests that a diagonal pattern of exercise is advantageous for strengthening shoulder muscles, but caution is needed when applying to patients requiring selective strengthening. Regarding both the concentric and eccentric phases of exercise, there was no significant difference in muscular activation, except in LT, between the two diagonal patterns of exercises.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) applied to the unilateral upper extremity on the muscle activation of contralateral lower extremity. Twenty-two healthy subjects (mean age of 23.7 years) participated in this study. Method : PNF patterns applied on the unilateral upper extremity in all subjects were the flexion/abduction/external rotation and lifting pattern. The hold and appoximation techniques for the irradiation were applied to end range of both patterns. Muscle activations in four patterns were measured in vastus medialis, tibialis anterior, rectus femoris, and gastrocnemius medial muscles of contralateral lower extremity using surface EMG system. Each EMG value in individual muscle was normalized for maximal voluntary contraction. The data were analyzed by one factor analysis of variance with repeated measure test. Result : There were significant differences in the between-subject effect (muscles) and within-subject effect (patterns) in comparison of muscle activation by application of PNF patterns (p<.05). The irradiation led to higher activation in the flexion/abduction/external rotation pattern than that of lifting pattern in all muscles (p<.05). The approximation techniques revealed more activations than these of hold technique in all muscles (p<.05). Conclusion : These results suggest that the application of PNF patterns to the unilateral upper extremity affect on the muscle activation of contralateral lower extremity and increase according to the intensity of resistance. This mechanism of contralateral effect might provide a help to the development of treatment method for the affected side and functional improvement for the patients who have damages of central nervous system or musculoskeletal problems by orthopedic injury.
This study was performed to investigate the factor that might affect mandibualr body rotation. For the study, 115 patients with temporomandibular disorders and 35 dental students without angy signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders were randomly selected as the patient group and the contreol group, respectively. Preferred chewing side, Angle' classification, lateral guidance pattern, and affected side were clinically recorded, and the amount of Mandibular body rotational torque movement was measured in wide opening and closure, in right and left excursion with vertical and lateral distance in frontal plane, right and left rotational angel in horizontal and in frontal plane. Masticatory muscle activity of anteriorocclusal contact pattern on maximal hard biting were also observed synchronously with BioEMG and T-Scan , respectively. The observed items were muscle activity of anterior temporalis and superficial masseter, and tooth contact status related to contact number, force, duration, and occlusal unbalance between right and left arch. The data collected were analyzed by SAS statistical program. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Mean value of vertical distance in frontal plane in wide opening and closure was more in control subjects than in patients, but there was no difference for rotational angle. In right excursion, rotational angles were greater in patient group than in control group. 2. Comparison among the subjects by preferred chewing side did not reveal any significant difference, but comparison among patients by affected side showed more rotational amount in bilaterally affected patients than in unilaterally affected patients. 3. Comparison among the subjects by Angle's classification or lateral guidance pattern revealed no difference. There was also no difference between preferred chewing side and contralateral side, and between affected side and contralateral side. 4. Positive correlation in madibular rotational torque movements were observed among vertical distance, total horizontal rotation angle, electromyographic activity of anterior temporalis, tooth contact number, and tooth contact force but total frontal rotation angle almost did not show any correlation with other variables except vertical distance.
