  • A large quantity of purified water sludge is generated in modern cities around the world. Dewatering is essential to reduce the volumes transported off-site for disposal. Traditionally employed methods such as solar drying methods are time-consuming. There are urgent demands for developing alternatives to dewater the sludge in a less time-consuming manner. In this paper, siphon method is proposed to dewater the high-water-content sludge with plastic drainage plate installed horizontally. A group of comparative tests are conducted to preliminarily investigate the dewatering behavior of the purified water sludge with siphon and solar drying methods, respectively. On the basis of the test results, the availability and effectiveness of the new method is verified. It may provide an innovative solution to treat the purified water sludge more effectively.

  • LiDAR systems provide dense and accurate topographic information. A pre-requisite to achieving the potential accuracy of LiDAR is having a proper system calibration, which aims at estimating all the systematic errors in the system measurements and the mounting parameters relating the different components. This paper presents a rigorous and two approximate methods for LiDAR system calibration. The rigorous approach makes use of the LiDAR equation and the system raw measurements. The approximate approaches utilize simplified LiDAR equations using some assumptions, which allow for less strict requirements regarding the raw measurements. The first presented approximate method, denoted as quasi-rigorous, assumes that we are dealing with a vertical platform (i.e., small pitch and roll angles). This method requires time-tagged point cloud and trajectory position data. The second approximate method, denoted as simplified, assumes that we are dealing with parallel strips, vertical platform, and minor terrain elevation variations compared to the flying height above ground. Such method can be performed using the LiDAR point cloud only. Experimental results using a real dataset, whose characteristics deviate to some extent from the utilized assumptions in the approximate methods, are presented to provide a comparative analysis of the outcome from the introduced methods.

  • Due to the decrease in coastal productivity and deterioration in the quality of ecosystem which result from the excessive overfishing of fisheries resources and the environmental pollution, fisheries resources in the Korean waters hit the dangerous level in respect of quantity and quality. In order to manage sustainable and effective fisheries resources, it is necessary to suggest the potential yield (PY) for clarifying available fisheries resources in the Korean waters. So far, however, there have been few studies on the estimation methods for PY in Korea. In addition, there have been no studies on the comparative analysis of the estimation methods and the substantial estimation methods for PY targeted for large marine ecosystem (LME) For the reasonable management of fisheries resources, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive study on the estimation methods for the PY which combines population dynamics and ecosystem dynamics. To reflect the research need, this study conducts a comparative analysis of estimation methods for the PY in the Korean waters of the East Sea to understand the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and suggests the estimation method which considered both population dynamics and ecosystem dynamics to supplement shortcomings of each method. In this study, the maximum entropy (ME) model of the holistic production method (HPM) is considered to be the most reasonable estimation method due to the high reliability of the estimated parameters. The results of this study are expected to be used as significant basic data to provide indicators and reference points for sustainable and reasonable management of fisheries resources.

  • Background: Noise-induced hearing loss is a well-known occupational disease that affects many fish harvesters from many fisheries worldwide, whose risk factor is prolonged exposure to hazardous noise levels. To date, academic research activities and regulatory bodies have not provided any comparative analysis among the existing methods to assess noise exposure levels of fish harvesters. This paper provides a comparison of four relevant assessment methods of noise exposure, examining the results of a measurement campaign performed onboard small fishing vessels from Newfoundland and Labrador. Methods: We traveled onboard 11 vessels engaged in multiple fisheries from Newfoundland and Labrador and performed extensive noise exposure surveys using the simplified International Maritime Organization method, the full-day measurement method, and the two methods provided by ISO 9612:2009, the task-based method and job-based method (JBM). Results: The results showed that the four methods yield similar values when the noise components are dominated by the engine and auxiliaries (steady-state sources); when noise components are dominated by the fishing gear, task-based method and the simplified International Maritime Organization method estimates are less accurate than JBM, using full-day measurements as baseline. Conclusion: The JBM better assesses noise exposure in small-scale fisheries, where noise exposure has significant variance and uncertainties on the exposure levels are higher.

  • Background: Xylazole (Xyl) is a veterinary anesthetic that is structurally and functionally similar to xylazine. However, the effects of Xyl in vitro remain unknown. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the anesthetic mechanism of Xyl using fetal rat nerve cells treated with Xyl. Methods: Fetal rat nerve cells cultured for seven days were treated with 10, 20, 30, and 40 ㎍/ mL Xyl for 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min. Variations of amino acid neurotransmitters (AANTs), Nitric oxide-Cyclic GMP (NO-cGMP) signaling pathway, and ATPase were evaluated. Results: Xyl decreased the levels of cGMP and NO in nerve cells. Furthermore, Xyl affected the AANT content and Na+-K+-ATPase and Ca2+-Mg2+-ATPase activity in nerve cells. These findings suggested that Xyl inhibited the NO-cGMP signaling pathway in nerve cells in vitro. Conclusions: This study provided new evidence that the anesthetic and analgesic effects of Xyl are related to the inhibition of the NO-cGMP signaling pathway.
