A System Dynamics View of Safety Management in Small Construction Companies

  • Due to unique characteristics of small construction companies, safety management is comprised of complex problems (e.g., resources constraints, a lack of formalized management structures, low level of management safety commitment etc.). In order to understand causal interdependencies between safety factors at different system levels (regulation, organization, technical and individual), this paper aims to develop a system dynamics (SD) model of safety management in small construction companies. The purpose of the SD model is to better understand why small construction companies have low level of safety performance. A causal loop diagram (CLD) was developed based on literature, with an attempt to map causal relationships between variables. The CLD was then converted into stock and flow diagram for simulation. Various tests were conducted to build confidence in the model's ability to represent the reality. A number of policies were analyzed by changing the value of parameters. The value of a system dynamics approach to safety management in small construction companies is its ability to address joint effects of multiple safety risk factors on safety performance with a systems thinking perspective. By taking into account feedback loops and non-linear relationships, such a system dynamics model provides insights into the complex causes of relatively poor safety performance of small construction companies and improvement strategies.

  • 본 연구에서는 국내 중소 제조기업을 대상으로 스마트팩토리의 구축요인에 따른 활용 정도를 분석하였다. 연구결과 첫째, 스마트팩토리를 기존의 목표와 취지에 맞게 활용하기 위해서 스마트팩토리 도입에 따른 중소 제조기업의 구축요인에 대한 사전에 기업의 특성에 맞는 전략적 검토가 필요하다는 점을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 조직 내 구성원들이 스마트팩토리에 대해 어떻게 받아들이고 수용하느냐 따라 활용의 정도는 차이가 있다는 점을 실증분석을 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 중소 제조기업 뿐 만 아니라 많은 기업은 조직 내 구성원들이 스마트팩토리에 따른 변화의 불안감을 갖지 않고, 적극적 참여를 유도하고 이를 통해 스마트팩토리 활용도를 높이기 위해 중요성을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • Recently, as the importance of IT management is increasing, many companies have adopted ITSM(IT Service Management) as a solution to various IT management issues. In addition, some advanced companies are using 6 Sigma technique in their implementation of ITSM. The main purpose of this study is to analyze critical success factors of 6 Sigma in applying to the implementation of ITSM. For a case company, which is known to be successful in applying 6 sigma in its implementation of ITSM, six critical success factors were analyzed. The factors include leadership of CEO, capability and level of 6 Sigma belts, management of accurate data, building organizational systems, training and education, and evaluation and incentive. The results of the study are expected to be used as an useful information for companies to apply 6 Sigma in the implementation of ITSM.

  • Wide use of smart and high performing mobile device makes consumers use diverse distribution channels, composed of online and offline channel. Smart companies are trying to deploy omni channel. In order to successfully integrate these diverse channels, it is necessary to understand consumers' preference of channel choice. Thus, this study was focused on the influencing factors of channel preference such as price sensitivity, consumer innovativeness, time pressure, and need-for-touch. And this study compared these influencing factors between Korea and China, and drew meaningful message for e-commerce companies and offline distribution companies.

공급체인관리시스템 도입에 영향을 주는 요인 (Factors Affecting the Adoption of Supply Chain Management Systems)

  • This study examined the factors that make Korean companies adopt supply chain management systems. By adding a group of inter-organizational factors, we extended an innovation-theory-based research model to study the information technology adoption. Sixty three questionnaires from 700 leading companies in Korea were collected and analyzed. Independent variables of the research included environmental, organizational, innovation, and relational characteristics. We found that supply chain management systems in Korean companies are at the initial stage of the adoption, in general. This research also found that company's environmental characteristics have insignificant relationship with the adoption of supply chain management systems. In addition, organizational characteristics (the support of top management, the size of organization, and the information technology infrastructure), innovation characteristics of the supply chain, and the power exercised over the supply chain played important roles in adopting supply chain management systems.

기업환경과 제휴성공요인에 대한 섬유업체들의 인식 (Perceptions of Textile Companies on Business Environments and Alliance Success Factors)

  • The purposes of this study were to examine the alliance success factors (ASF) and the business environments (BE) from the textile companies' viewpoint, to examine the differences in ASF and BE by firm characteristics, and to examine the relationships between BE and ASF. BE included the degree of market competition and the firm's competitive advantage, and firm characteristics included type of business, the number of employees, and length of business operation. Data were obtained from 155 textile companies in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions in Korea via a questionnaire survey. Four factors including relationship capital, organizational support, alliance management, and alliance performance were extracted from ASF, and resources, product development, and marketing were extracted from the firm's competitive advantage. There were differences in product development by the number of employees and in the degree of market competition by type of business. The degree of market competition had significant relationships with all of ASF while the firm's competitive advantage differed in the relationships.

한국상장기업 정보기술의 인력집중도 결정요인 (Determinants of Information Technology Personnel Size in Korean Listed Companies:A Cross-Sectional Analysis)

  • In this study, we empirically examine cross-sectional determinants of IT personnel size of Korean listed companies from year 2004 to year 2009. Also, cross-sectional determinants of IT personnel size involved in managing internal control over financial reporting (hereafter, "ICFR") were examined. IT personnel or IT workers are recognized as critical intangible resources comprising firm's IT capability. Although IT personnel are regarded as important resources, there are not much information about factors explaining the size of firms' IT personnel. Fortunately, the Korean governmant regulates that every listed companies should dislclose the number of IT workers and ICFR-related IT personnel in their annual reports. This study utilizes the mandatorily disclosed IT personnel data to analyze cross-sectional determinants of korean listed companies' IT personnel size. Empirical results show that profitability, uncertainty, leverage, industry types are statistically significant factors associated with the size of IT personnel.

국내 기업의 통신망 특성 분석 및 기술 요소에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics and Technical Components of Enterprise Networks in Korea)

  • This paper proposes analyses of characteristics and the technical components of Korean enterprise network. Based on a survey from professionals of Korean companies, we present statistical summaries of building blocks of hardware and software of the networks implemented in Korean companies. We also perform statistical analyses to find the relationships among the technical components and to extract major technical factors that differentiate enterprise networks by the business types and the size of the companies. We conclude that some of the technical factors are closely correlated and some of them are found to differentiate networks by the business types and the size of the companies.

  • Recently, in the shipping companies have been employing prudently in order to prevent from sea accidents occurred by human factors. Also the students of merchant marine universities are choosing prudently the shipping companies when taking a job. But many qualitative and quantitative factors are considered in decision making for the employment. FSM(Fuzzy Structural Modeling) has been widely used in modeling the system composed of such qualitative and quantitative factor. In this paper, a case study is discussed for the analysis of the consciousness of the employment of shipping companies using FSM. Also this paper proposed the planes for educating and recruitment guiding the student in maritime university.

  • Recently, from the viewpoint of TQM, the criticism and new approaches toward Japanese TQC have made much progress in Japan. It shows that these new approaches to quality are what are needed these days. In this connection, this paper aims at the study of a reform of Japanese TQC. This paper consists of the following two steps. First, several success factors of TQM in Japanese companies were selected through the study of literature. Second, actual approaches to or recognition of TQM in those companies were examined through the AHP analysis. The results of this paper are as follows: First, quality improvement and cost-down efforts within a factory have been emphasized. On the other hand, the development of strategic quality management is weak. Second, the development of creativity by individual autonomous teamwork is more needed than the development of creativity by group consciousness in companies. Third, the reform of upper-class management must be carried out by powerful leadership of top management.
