The plate loading test(PLT) and the field density test are mainly used on the construction of embankments to control the compaction of a limited layer thickness. These two test methods are very time consuming and inefficient, but they are still commonly used as the methods of quality control for soil compaction. In the last 3 decades, many devices such as geogauge, light falling weight deflectometer(LFWD) and dynamic cone penetrometer(DCP) etc., have been introduced into the engineering market with the objective of acquiring in situ stiffness properties of the compacted soil layers. Recently, a new type of sensor, called compactometer, which in mounted on the drum of a roller and measures impact forces continuously with GPS, called as Continuous Compaction Control(CCC), has come into use in many countries such as America, Germany, Japan and so on. The main objective of this paper is to assess the potential use of these new devices as quality control and assurance devices for compacted soil layers. Based on this study, compactometer and the LFWD results werestrongly correlated with the result obtained from the PLT and the field density test.

The use of Compaction Grouting evolved in the 1950's to correct structural settlement of buildings. Over the almost 50 years, the technology has developed and is currently used in wide range of applications. Compaction Grouting, the injection of a very stiff, 'zero-slump' mortar grout under relatively high pressure, displaces and compacts soils. It can effectively repair natural or man-made soil strength deficiencies in variety of soil formations. Major uses of Compaction Grouting include densifying loose soils or fill voids caused by sinkholes, poorly compacted fills, broken utilities, improper dewatering, or soft ground tunneling excavation. Other application include preventing liquefaction, re-leveling settled structures, and using compaction grout bulbs as structural elements of minipiles or underpinning. The technique replaced slurry injection, or 'pressure grouting', as the preferred method of densification grouting. There are several reasons for the increased use of Compaction Grouting which can be summarized in one word: CONTROL. The low slump grout and injection processes are usually designed to keep the grout in a homogeneous mass at the point of injection, while acceptable in some limited applications, tends to quickly get out of control. Hydraulic soil fracturing can cause extensive grout travel, often well beyond the desired treatment zone. So, on the basis of the two case history constructed in recent year, a study has been peformed to analyze the basic mechanism of the Compaction Grouting and verify the effectiveness of the ground improvement using some test methods.

The soil samples used in this study were prepared with the residual granite soils passed through the #4 sieve and obtained from Pocheon in Gyeonggi-Ki do. Specifically, five types of samples were prepared. Sample A which is a natural state soil was classified as SM according to the uses. Samples of B, C, D, and E were prepared by mixing Sample A with bentonite and were classified as SC according to the uses. The plasticity indexes of samples B, C, D, and E were 15, 25, 30, and 40, respectively. The specimens, whose dimensions are 100mm by 127.5mm, were prepared by A method of ASTM D 698 with the Proctor mold. In experiments, the loading with the 1%/min was applied. Four different disk diameters, 13mm, 26mm, 38mm, and 52mm were used in the Improved Unconfined Penetration (IUP) tests. To compare the tensile strengths, the split tensile tests were also conducted on the same specimens used for the IUP tests. To find out the effects of moisture contents, plasticity Index of specimens on the tensile strength, six different water contents were used for making a specimen.
In this study the foundation methods which our ancestors, through a historical age as early as three kingdom's period, adopted for their civil structures and buildings have been reviewed by investigating the discovered relics. It is shown that they already, from about 2000 years ago, had applied various foundation techniques considering the structure types and the foundation soil conditions. The ancient foundation methods are categorized as artificially laid alternating soil and boulder layers under heavy structures, compacted soil base under wide loaded area, stone column under pillars of buildings, stacked long stone footing for special buildings such as palace buildings, and piling for bridges, They are analyzed with respect to current foundation techniques.
The constructions of engineering structures such as airports, highways and railway on clayey soils may create many problems. The economic losses and damages caused by these soils have led researchers to do many studies using different chemical additives for the stabilization of them. Lime is a popular additive used to stabilize the clayey soils. When the base course is stabilized by mixing with an additive, inevitable delays may occur during compaction due to reasons like insufficient workers, breakdown of compaction equipment, etc. The main purpose of this study is to research the effect of compaction delay time (7 days) on the strength, compaction, and dynamic properties of a clay soil stabilized with lime content of 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15% by dry weight of soil. Compaction characteristics of these mixes were determined immediately after mixing, and after 7 days from the end of mixing process. Within this context, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) under the various curing periods (uncured, 7 and 28 days) and dynamic triaxial tests were performed on the compacted specimens. The results of UCS and dynamic triaxial tests showed that delayed compaction on the strength of the lime-stabilized clay soil were significantly effective. Especially with the lime content of 9%, the increase in the shear modulus (G) and UCS of 28 days curing were more prominent after 7 days mellowing period. Because of the complex forms of hysteresis loops caused by the lime additive, the damping ratio (D) values differed from the trends presented in the literature and showed a scattered relationship.
Geotechnical materials such as silt, fine sand, or coarse granular soils may be unstable under undrained shearing or during rainfall infiltration starting an unsaturated state. Some researches are available describing the instability of coarse granular soils in drained or undrained conditions. However, there is a need to investigate the instability mechanism of unsaturated silty soil considering the effect of degree of compaction and net confining stress under partially and fully drained conditions. The specimens in the current study are compacted at 65%, 75%, & 85% degree of compaction, confined at pressures of 60, 80 & 120 kPa, and tested in partially and fully drained conditions. The tests have been performed in two steps. In Step-I, the specimens were sheared in constant water content conditions (a type of partially drained test) to the maximum shear stress. In Step-II, shearing was carried in constant suction conditions (a type of fully undrained test) by keeping shear stress constant. At the start of Step-II, PWP was increased in steps to decrease matric suction (which was then kept constant) and start water infiltration. The test results showed that soil instability is affected much by variation in the degree of compaction and confining stresses. It is also observed that loose and medium dense soils are vulnerable to pre-failure instability i.e., instability occurs before reaching the failure state, whereas, instability in dense soils instigates together with the failure i.e., failure line (FL) and instability line (IL) are found to be unique.
In this study, it conducted a compaction quality control test in 29 domestic construction sites and investigated the relationship between classical method (Cyclic Plate bearing test) and LFWD test with subgrade materials which consist in sandy soil and gravelly soil. According to the test results, the most of soil types were mostly satisfied with specification criterion and gravelly soils were easily satisfied with values over 3 times greater than specification criterion. In term of the correlation relation of soil modulus with the two compaction quality control test methods, it is shown that the sandy soil types were a good correlation, while gravelly soil types with a high stiffness materials were indicated less correlation. After the compensation for stress condition, a linear regression for elastic modulus were higher correlation.
Soil compaction is one of the major problems facing modern agriculture. Overuse of machinery, intensive cropping, short crop rotations, intensive grazing and inappropriate soil management leads to compaction. This study was carried out evaluate of the effects soil texture and different compaction levels within the soil profile on the soybean root growth and productivity. The soybean plants were grown in $21cm{\o}{\times}30cm$ cylinder pots using three different soil textures (clay, fine loamy and coarse loamy) compacted at different compaction levels (1.25, 1.50, 1.75, and 2.00 MPa). Results revealed that soybean development is more sensitive on penetration resistance, irrespective of soil type. Soybean yield and root weight density significantly decreases with increasing levels of soil compaction in both clayey and fine loamy soils, but not in coarse loamy soil. The highest root weight density was recorded in coarse loamy soils, followed by fine loamy and clay soils, in descending order. The root growth by soil compaction levels started to decline from 1.16, 1.28 and 1.60 MPa for clay, fine loamy and coarse loamy soils. Soybean production in the field experiment decreased about 30% at compacted sub-soils compared to undisturbed soils.
Piles are widely used in structural foundations of engineering projects. However, the deformation of the soil around the pile caused by driving process has an adverse effect on adjacent existing underground buildings. Many previous studies have addressed related problems in sand and saturated clay. Nevertheless, the failure mechanism of pile driving in unsaturated soil remains scarcely reported, and this issue needs to be studied. In this study, a modeling test system based on particle image velocimetry (PIV) was developed for studying deformation characteristics of pile driving in unsaturated silt with different water contents. Meanwhile, a series of direct shear tests and soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) tests also were conducted. The test results show that the displacement field shows an apparent squeezing effect under the pile end. The installation pressure and displacement field characteristics are sensitive to the water content. The installation pressure is the largest and the total displacement field is the smallest, for specimens compacted at water content of 11.5%. These observations can be reasonably interpreted according to the relevant unsaturated silt theory derived from SWCC tests and direct shear tests. The variation characteristics of the soil displacement field reflect the macroscopic mechanical properties of the soil around the pile.
In this paper, a method reasonably predicting soil water characteristic curve of domestic weathered granite soils was suggested, based on the test results obtained through experiments. In other words, a method to estimate the parameters of Fredlund and Xing's equation using an ANN (artificial neural network) was proposed. The particle size distribution, compacted water content and void ratio were used as input data in the ANN model for predicting the parameters, since it was found that these basic soil properties affect the parameters obtained from the test results and the fitting results of SWCC. The network model proposed in this study to obtain the parameters of Fredlund and Xing's SWCC equation produced reliable predictions, and the precision of the prediction results from the proposed method was high, in comparison with the prediction results of other methods.
