  • Sensorless brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive systems are often subjected to inaccurate commutation signals and can produce high current peaks and conduction consumption. To achieve accurate commutation, a fast commutation shift regulation method for sensorless BLDC motor drive systems considering the influence of the inductance freewheeling process is presented to compensate inaccurate commutation signals. The regulation method is effective in both steady speed and variable speed operations. In the proposed method, the commutation error is gained from the line-voltage difference integral in a 60 electrical-degree conduction period and the outgoing phase current before commutation. In addition, the detection precision of the commutation error is improved due to the consideration of the freewheeling period. The commutation error is directly obtained, which avoids successive optimization and accelerates the convergence rate of the proposed method. Moreover, the commutation error features a positive or negative sign, which can be utilized as an indicator of advanced or delayed commutation. Finally, experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method. The results obtained show that the proposed method can accurately regulate commutation signals.

  • A novel torque sharing function (TSF) is presented. To improve efficiency and to reduce torque ripple in commutation region, only a phase torque under commutation is regulated to produce a uniform torque. And the torque developed by the other phase remains with the previous state under a current limit of the motor and drive. If the minimum change of a phase torque reference can not satisfy the total reference torque, two-phase changing mode is used. Since a phase torque is constant and the other phase torque is changed at each rotor position, total torque error can be reduced within a phase torque error limit. And the total torque error is dependent on the change of phase torque. To consider non-linear torque characteristics and to suppress a tail current at the end of commutation region, the incoming phase current is changed to torque increasing direction, but the outgoing phase current is changed to torque decreasing direction. So, the torque sharing of the outgoing phase and incoming phase can be smoothly changed with a minimum current cross over. The proposed control scheme is verified by some computer simulations and experimental results.

  • This paper presents a design method of programmable low pass filter(PLPF) which reduce an estimation error of a zero crossing point(ZCP) for a high speed brushless DC(BLDC) motor drive. BLDC motor sensorless drive is possible by estimation of ZCP. The ZCP estimated by detecting a change of back-EMF polarity has the estimation error because noises exist on the measured back-EMF. Therefore a calculated commutation timing using the ZCP is inaccurate. And the inexact commutation timing leads to ripples of 3-phase current and degradation of drive performance. This paper proposes the design method of the PLPF to overcome these problems. First, a speed calculated a inaccurate period of the ZCP is analyzed in the frequency domain. Then, the PLPF that has varying cut-off frequency according to change of the speed is designed on the frequency analysis result. The proposed method is verified by the experiment.

  • Torque pulsation mechanism and highly nonlinear magnetic characterization of switched reluctance motors(SRM) lead to unfavorable torque ripple and limit the variety of applications in industry. In this paper, a modification method proposed for torque ripple minimization of SRM based on conventional torque sharing functions(TSF) to improve maximum speed of torque ripple-free operation considering converter limitations. Due to increasing phase inductance in outgoing phase during the commutation region, reference current tracking can be deteriorated especially when the speed increased. Moreover, phase torque production in incoming phase may not be reached to the reference value near the turn-on angle in which the incremental inductance would be dramatically decreased. Torque error for outgoing phase can cause increasing the resultant motor torque while it would be negative for incoming phase and yields reducing the motor torque. In this paper, a modification method is proposed in which phase torque tracking error for each phase under the commutation added to the other phase so that the resultant torque remained in constant level. This yields to extend constant torque region and reduce peak phase current when the speed increased. Simulation and experimental results for four phase 4 KW, 8/6 SRM validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • This paper presents zero crossing point(ZCP) estimation methods considering discretization error for a high speed brushless DC(BLDC) motor drive. The ZCP is estimated by detecting the change of back-EMF polarity for the BLDC sensorless drive, and the discretization error exist on the estimated ZCP. The discretization error of the ZCP is a cause of the delay of a commutation timing of current and increment of a current ripple factor. Besides a delay of a ZCP estimation brings on the limitation of a speed range for the BLDC sensorless drive. The compensation method based on the error analysis with probability theory for reducing the effects of the discretization error of the ZCP is proposed. Also a ZCP estimation method according to the Back-EMF patterns is proposed to widen the speed range for the BLDC sensorless drive. The proposed methods are verified by the experiment.

  • This paper proposes a robust optimal nonlinear control with an observer to reject the offset errors of position tracking for surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors. We provide the control method to reject offset errors and load torque for designing field oriented control (FOC) based the alternating current (AC) frame. The proposed method consists of a torque generator, a commutation scheme, an electrical controller, and a load torque observer. The mechanical controller is designed to compensate for load torque and the offset error and generate the desired torque. The commutation scheme is proposed to create the desired currents for the desired torque. The electrical controller is developed to guarantee the desired currents. The observer is designed to estimate both the velocity and the load torque. In order to obtain the robustness to parameter uncertainties and a gain tuning guide, the linear quadratic regulator method is applied to the proposed method. The closed-loop stability is proven. A detailed process for the FOC design and an analysis of the control methods based on the AC frame are presented. The performance of the proposed method was validated via experiments. The proposed method obtains the FOC based on the AC frame. Furthermore, the position tracking performance of the proposed method is superior to that of the conventional method.

  • To improve the performances of Sawyer motors and to regulate yaw rotation, various feedback control methods have been developed. Almost all of these methods require information on the position, velocity or full state of the motor. Therefore, in this paper, a nonlinear observer is designed to estimate the full state of the four forcers in a Sawyer motor. The proposed method estimates the full state using only positional feedback. Generally, Sawyer motors are operated within a yaw magnitude of several degrees; outside of this range, Sawyer motors step out. Therefore, this observer design assumes that the yaw is within ${\pm}90^\b{o}$. The convergence of the estimation error is proven using the Lyapunov method. The proposed observer guarantees that the estimation error globally exponentially converges to zero for all arbitrary initial conditions. Furthermore, since the proposed observer does not require any transformation, it may result in a reduction in the commutation delay. The simulation results show the performance of the proposed observer.

  • This pper describes a digital sensorless drive of permanent magnet brushless DC motors. In order to detect in real time the rotor positions of which Emf becomes zero, terminal voltages are sampled during PWM duty cycle. This method generates detection error in indirect sensed position, which is the harmonic component of PWM frequency. In this paper, the drive adopted Butterworth low pass filter for rejection of the sensing error and for accurate estimation of commutation time. Analytical design process of the digital filter is proposed and the experimental results show that the performance of the proposed sensorless drive is superior to that of the sensorless drives without filterint.

  • Auxiliary air compressor(ACM) applied to railroad cars is a device which controls amount of compressed air in order that pantographs can be mounted correctly on the roof of an electric train. Existing ACMs consist of dc motors and brushes wear out due to friction with a commutator. Therefore, continuous maintenance is required. However, three phase BLDC motors have higher power density compared to dc motors and the machine maintenance is not needed because electric commutation is possible. The three phase generally uses hall sensors to get position information and this enables the accurate control. This paper suggests an algorithm that compensates the errors occurred when the hall sensors have a breakdown for stable operation.
