  • Objective: The aim of this study was to develop the adaptive device for severe physical disabilities using smart device in the driving simulator and its performance evaluation. Development of appropriate driving adaptive device for the people with serious physical limitation could contribute to maintain their community mobility. Background: There is lack of adaptive driving devices for the people with disabilities in Korea. However, if smart device systems like iPod and iPhone are used for driving a car, the people with serious physical limitations can improve their community mobility. Method: Both gyroscope and accelerometer from iPod were used to measure the tilted angle of the smart device for driving. Customized Labview program was also used to control three axis motors for steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals. Thirteen subjects were involved in the experiment for performance evaluation of smart device in simulator. Five subjects had driver licenses. Another four subjects did not have driver licenses. Others were people with disabilities. Results: Average driving score of the normal group with driver license in the simulator increased 46.6% compared with the normal group without driver license and increased 30.4% compared with the disabled group(p<0.01). There was no significant difference in the average driving score between normal group without driver license and disabled group(p>0.05). Conclusion: The normal group with driver license showed significantly higher driving score than other groups. The normal group without driver license and disabled group could improve their driving skills with training in simulator. Application: If follow-up studies would be continued and applied in adapted vehicle for on road environment, many people with more severe disabilities could drive and improve the quality of life.

  • The study aims to find regional characteristics of Olle and Olle-Dam the old town of Jeju city, "Mu-geun-sung," through researches of the status of the spatial structure in the area. The research was mainly conducted through literature survey and field survey. Literature survey was conducted for the typification of alleys and stone walls. Field surveys were conducted to reveal the location, length, and materials of the stone walls on alleys. As a result, this study can grasp the spatial characteristics of the alleys and the typological characteristics of the stone walls in the old urban areas of Jeju City. The unit alley located in the old city area of Jeju was severely damaged. Also, the stone walls could reveal that there are few areas where the original shape is preserved. The management of the community has not been properly carried out in the use of alleys. In addition, there is concern about the damage caused by securing a road in the future. On the other hand, many of the damaged stone walls had basically the original shape. There were many stone walls that retained their original shape in the old alley. For this reason, there is a high possibility that the alleys and stone walls located in the old urban areas of Jeju are utilized as assets of the area. Based on the results of the above study, community recovery using old alleys of Jeju is required.

  • To find out the major factors affecting the pedestrian satisfaction, the quantitative evaluation on the walking environment were carried out using questionnaire with the 5-point Likert scale in the selected 6 community roads in Seoul. Data were analyzed using descriptive, correlation, and regression analysis. One of main findings reported that pedestrians are not satisfied yet with pedestrian environment(Mean=2.88, S.D.=1.12). The correlation analysis reported 'Safe to walk' (R=.640,p=.001), 'Feel like walking' (r=.603, p=.001), 'Enjoyable to walk'(R=.601,p=.001), and 'Adequate for walking & dialogue'(R=.586,p=.001), are top four factors that positively correlate with overall pedestrian satisfaction. Results indicate that safety should be considered in priorities but amenity development be thought to be important in pedestrian improvement projects. And a broad public participation in decision-making is needed for the effectiveness of the project.

  • Necessarily traffic policies have been biased in car than pedestrian, so pedestrian's environment is getting worse. Result of this situation our accident rate is high as 36.4%, compared to OECD member countries with average rate of 17.8%(in 2009). Increasing interest for pedestrians environment improvement, and it make an effort to build environment to guarantee walk and safety of pedestrians. Analysis on the binary logistic regression(BLR) was used. The dependent variable is occurring from the road width of less than 9m accident, and independent variable extracted can be obtained from the traffic accident data. Traffic accident on roads having width of less than 9 meters affecting variables is when the driver is straight, when the driver is female, when the pedestrian is walk driveway, and so on. To prevent it, efforts is demanded to protect handicapped, to build safe pedestrians environment using C-ITS and to decrease speed of going straight vehicle on roads having width of less than 9 meters.

  • Recently, as an enonomic importance of the Eurasian Continent raises, the necessity of east-west connecting ancient transport roads research is increasing. Although domestic research of eastern-western international exchange in the Eurasia is not yet very active, the studies of history, archaeology, art history, folklore, costume history have been advanced steadily. An attention for the exchange through steppe route originated from the interest in Korean folk and Korean culture and the research range is extending to Xiungnu, Kurgan culture as a direct investigation on the remains of Mongolia and Kazakhstan has been achieved constantly. The art history has been leading the research of exchange which is based on desert and oasis. The field research of Iran, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, etc progressed in various routes, and the research on diverse topics including Silla's golden culture, transmission of glass, and the Buddhism is improving. Research on the maritime silk road is weaker, compared to other parts. Buddhist and Hindu temples of Southeast Asia attracted some interest to people, but the research should focus on the restoration of sea route and consideration of its meaning. Research of this part is expected to be more activative, as domestic researchers investigate Don Son culture and Sa Huynh culture of Vietnam by themselves. From now on, we should focus on topics that are not directly connected to Korean history, and Korean culture. Because it is also our duty to study and conserve the culture of entire human community.

  • This study aims to investigate how easy pedestrians get around within/through the "Apartment Complexes (AC), " a common style of high-rise multi-family housing in Korea. Over the past six decades, the AC has been the most conventional way to provide standardized housing efficiently to address the problems of the shortage of housing and the substandard housing, due to the explosion of urban population with the rapid industrialization. The AC is a huge chunk of homeogenous multi-family housing, mostly condos with decent infrastructure, including parks, pedestrian passages, schools, ect. Both in the new town development and urban renewal programs have utilized the advantages of the AC. Since the design principals of AC tend to adopt the "protective design" to prevent cars and pedestrians coming outside from passing it, it has been criticised for dissecting the continuity of socioeconomic context in neighborhoods. The neo-traditional planning urbanists, including Jane Jacobs, emphasize that smaller blocks and grid road newtworks are the key in improving social, cultural, and economic vitality of the neighborhoods, because these design concepts allow more pedestrians and different types of people to be mixed in a neighborhood. In this study, we first adopted objective measures for pedestrian accessibility and pedestrian efficiency. These measures were used to calculate the lengths of shortest paths from residential buildings to the edges of AC. We tested the difference in shortest paths between the current pedestrian networks of AC and hypothetical grid networks on the AC, and the relative difference is considered as the pedestrian efficiency, using the network analysis function of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Python programming. We found from the randomly selected 30 ACs that the existing non-grid road networks in ACs are worse than the hypothesized grid networks, in terms of pedestrian efficiency. In average, pedestrians in AC with the conventional road networks have to walk than 25%, 26%, and 27% longer than the networks of $125{\times}45m$, $100{\times}45m$, and $75{\times}45m$, respectively. With the t-test analysis, we found the pedestrian efficiency of AC with the conventional network is lower than grid-networks. Many new urbanists stress, easiness of walking is one of the most import elements for community building and social bonds. With the findings from the objective measures of pedestrian accessibility and efficiency, the AC would have limitations to attract people outside into the AC itself, which would increase dis-connectivity with adjacent areas.

  • The purpose of the study was to identify the level of housing choice behavior by using the factors of residential satisfaction level, mobility motivation, and housing needs of potential purchasers in Bukgu New Housing Area, Ulsan. The survey used questionnaire from 326 households living in Bukgu and nearby area and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The research results showed low degree of residential satisfaction in storage space and neighborhood. The mobility motivations were improvement of physical environment improvement, education environment, walking road, view and lighting. The housing needs for indoor spaces showed to want more functional arrangement than the room size. The housing needs for outdoor spaces showed to want neighborhood environment in connection with the education or hospital facilities, the welfare facilities for pre-kindergarten children and elders and the leisure facilities. And the housing needs for facilities were floor furnishing for health, crime prevention system for safety needs, housekeeping appliance against environmental pollution, additional function for energy saving. The housing needs for common spaces showed that the residents preferred playing facilities by age group, exercise facilities, the community hall and the rest room which can do games or meetings.
