  • Today, the importance of library services for children is well acknowledged by many. The children's rooms of the public library in addition to the children's library must be the place where the community's young ones grow up and learn to give back to their society. Also, the libraries are a life-long source of education. However, not all of the public libraries in our country have librarians specialized in children and young adults. The lack of specialized librarians prevents the public libraries from keeping up with the rapid change of society, which in turn prevents the libraries from meeting children's needs for information, culture, and recreation. The purpose of this research has two goals in mind. The first objective is to find out how to effectively build cooperative networks that will help the children's librarians of both public and children's libraries to better serve the children. The second objective is to solve any problems the librarians may encounter while serving the children by studying the formal and informal contents of the cooperative networks, and identifying which areas are in need of these cooperative networks.

  • This study aims to compare the awareness of the social value of public libraries between users and non-users to materialize the abstract concept of social value and, thereby, to present measures that can be applied to the library field. For this purpose, a survey was conducted in person or online for 15 days from May 7, 2023, targeting Paju citizens. Frequency analysis, factor analysis, independent samples t-test, and one-way analysis of variance were conducted on 206 valid response copies using SPSS 25.0. In the results, it is shown that, first, for awareness of the social value of public libraries according to socio-demographic characteristics, there were significant differences depending on age, with in particular, awareness among those in their 10s and 40s being higher than other age groups. For awareness of community development, the awareness of the female group was higher than that of the male group, while, for the awareness according to occupation, it is shown that awareness was highest in the following order: student, others, housewife, self-employed, and office worker. Second, for the awareness of the social value of public libraries, the awareness of the user group was higher than that of the non-user group in all areas. Third, for awareness of the social value of public libraries according to the level of library use, there was no significant difference between groups. In conclusion, it is suggested that measures to encourage non-users to become users, develop new content and services targeting male group and those in their 60s, and 20s, and strengthen community activities are needed to raise awareness of the social value of Paju City public libraries in the future.

  • Public libraries should plan and provide services that satisfy various needs of the local community users. In order to understand library users, it is essential first to grasp the service areas of libraries. The current service areas of public libraries are primarily set based on administrative boundaries of the areas where the libraries are located, which limits the consideration of actual user access patterns to the libraries. In this study, we aim to create service areas that incorporate the transportation and geographical characteristics of the library's surroundings and reflect the access patterns of library users. Specifically, we utilized street network data from 502 libraries in 7 metropolitan cities to determine the travel distance and time from user locations, considering gradients, to the libraries. Subsequently, we applied the shortest path algorithm to generate service areas within a 30-minute walking or driving range. As a result, we confirmed that there are differences in the service area patterns of libraries depending on topographical factors, and this better reflects the realistic conditions of library access compared to service areas based on straight-line distances. This method of generating service areas contributes to a more accurate understanding of library users' numbers, characteristics, and needs.

This study investigated and analyzed the users' perceptions of the library functions and services currently provided and the demand for future services, targeting public library users in the Busan area. The data were collected through a questionnaire, and the respondents were 733 public library users in Busan. The main result is that first, the role and function of the public library that Busan users consider most important was still in material collection and provision. Second, in the information service type, the demand for cultural/lifelong learning program service was the highest, and in the service program, the demand for new IT technology experience and education was the highest. Third, as a result of ISA analysis of information service type, material provision service and information literacy education service were types to be maintained, and reading related service was type to be managed intensively. Fourth, in the analysis of service demand by age, those aged 41 to 50 years old were the generation with the highest demand in all types except for the information literacy education service type, and the demand for information literacy education was the highest among the elderly generation over 61 years old. And the user group in the western part of Busan was higher than the user group in other regions in demand for almost all service types. The results of this study can be used as basic data when establishing strategies to optimize community public library services for users.

  • All public libraries are local public goods and cultural infrastructures whose ideological pillars are publicly operated, free, and open to all. This identity is justified when the public library provides various knowledge information, various programs, and community space to local residents within the service area, and ultimately contributes to the cultural development of the nation and society. To this end, the country and local governments must expand the number of individuals that meet legal standards, deploy competent professionals, and provide facilities and spaces that are easy to access and use. However, if there is a gap in infrastructure and services between regional public libraries, it causes inequality in access and use of residents, which inevitably leads to information gap and cultural welfare gap. Therefore, this study was analyzed the relative gap using the location quotient, key infrastructure indicators and service indicators of public libraries of regional government in Korea and basic local government in the Chungnam region from the viewpoint that the balanced development and capacity building of public libraries must precede the establishment of a public library in Chungnam region as a life-friendly knowledge information service institution, culture enjoyment and lifelong learning space. Based on the results, a method to resolve the gap was suggested by dividing the elements of gaps in public libraries into accessibility, core infrastructure, and services, focusing on vulnerable cities and counties in the Chungnam region.
