A field experiment was conducted to evaluate agronomic characteristics, forage quality and dry matter yield of Korean native wild hairy vetch(Vicia villosa Roth) and introduced vetch(Vicia) cultivars from Australia. Seeds were sown on 29 August 1998 and 29 September 1999 at the Livestock Experiment Farm, Keimyung College, Kyeongsan, Kyeongbuk. Vetch plants were harvested on 14 November 1998 and 5 May 1999 and 29 April 2000. 'Haymaker plus' and 'Cappelo woolly pod' (Vicia villosa ssp. dasycarpa(Ten.) Eav.) were higher than 'Namoi' (Vicia villosa ssp. dasycarpa(Ten.) Eav.) in winter survival and 'Popany' (Vicia benghalensis L.) and 'Victa' (Vicia sativa L.) did not overwinter from 1998 to 1999. 'Haymaker plus', 'Cappelo woolly pod', 'Namoi', Korean native wild hairy vetch and Chinese milk vetch were overwintered from 1999 to 2000, except 'Aneto common' (Vicia sativa L.). Fifty percent flowering was observed 23 April for 'Namoi', 24 April for 'Cappelo woolly pod' and 26 April for 'Haymaker plus' from 1998 to 1999. In 1999~2000, fifty percent flowering was observed 12 April for 'Namoi' and 'Cappelo woolly pod', 14 April for 'Haymaker plus', 23 April for Chinese milk, 30 April for 'Aneto common' and Korean native wild hairy vetch. Dry matter yield per hectare was significantly higher(p<0.05) for 'Haymaker plus', 'Cappelo' and 'Namoi' than 'Popany' and 'Vicata' from 1998 to 1999. In 1999-2000, dry matter yield per hectare was higher(p<0.05) for 'Namoi', 'Haymaker plus', 'Cappelo woolly pod' and Korean native wild hairy vetch than Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) and 'Aneto common'. CP content was relatively high, but Chinese milk vetch and 'Aneto common' were lower than other cultivars. ADF(acid deterguent fiber) was low in Chinese milk vetch, but between the other cultivars were similar. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested that 'Haymaker plus' would be recommendable for fall sown vetch for dry matter production.

This experiment was conducted to compare the agronomic characteristics and productivity inintroduced vetch cultivar at the experimental field of Grassland and Forage Crops Division, National Livestock Research Institute from 1999 to 2000. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with three replications. The vetch cultivar used in this study were 8 cultivar(Haymaker plus, Common, Capello, Namoi, Victa, Aneto, Popany, Korean milk vetch). Namoi, Victa and Aneto cultivar were died during winter. The cultivar having the fastest flowering date was Korean milk vetch while the flowering date of Common was the latest as 22th May. The average dry matter(DM) content was 14.7% and crude protein(CP) content was 20.9%. Common showed the highest CP content by 23.1% and Korean milk vetch showed the lowest content by 18.0%. Average acid detergent fiber(ADF) and neutral detergent fiber(NDF) content were 33.5 and 42.5% respectively. All cultivar showed the first grade of RFV(relative feed value). The productivity of vetch cultivar were severely different according to the winter hardness. Common showed the highest DM yield by 8,664kg/ha, but the DM yield of Capello and Popany were low by 3,004 and 2,114kg/ha, respectively. The yield of CP and TDN(total digestible nutrient) also was high at Common. The results of this experiments indicated that the productivity of vetch cultivar was effected greatly depending on winter hardness, therefore it was thought winter hardness is the main factor for introducing vetch cultivar.
This experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of the processing method of common vetch seed (CVS) (Vicia sativa) on laying performance, egg quality, metabolic parameters and liver histopatology during the peak production period in hens. Lohman layers, 46 wk of age in 6 replicate cages each containing 4 hens, were allocated randomly to one of four dietary treatments. Diets were control (C) diet containing no common vetch and experimental diets containing 25% raw common vetch (RCV), 25% soaked in water for 72 h with exchange of water every 24 h (SCV) and 25% soaked&boiled at $100^{\circ}C$ for 30 minute common vetch (SBCV). Inclusion of RCV into the diet deteriorated all laying performance variables. SCV did not alleviate the adverse effect of raw common vetch on feed intake, egg weight, feed conversion, final weight and weight change. SCV partially alleviated egg production (p<0.001). SBCV diminished the adverse effect on feed intake, egg weight, feed conversion, final weight and weight change compared to raw vicia sativa (p<0.001). No significant difference was detected between SBCV and the control group in terms of egg production, feed conversion, final weight and weight change. Regardless of the processing method, all the common vetch groups had lower shell strength compared to the control group. Haugh units did differ between all groups (p<0.001). Inclusion of RCV and SCV into the basal diet decreased triglyceride, cholesterol, total protein and serum glucose concentrations (p<0.001). Hovewer, inclusion of SBCV into the basal diet increased these parameters. Liver samples were stained with Hematoxylin and eosin (HE) and evaluated by light microscopy. A biopsy of native liver tissue was used as a control. No histopathologic finding was present in the control group. Raw V. sativa compared with the control caused lipid accumulations in hepatocytes, severe congestion of hepatic blood vessels, inflammation, increased numbers of Kupffer cells and sinusoidal dilatations. Whereas, the livers from groups given treated V. sativa showed only different degrees of sinusoidal dilatations. Findings from the present study point out the risk of increased hepatic damage due to use of raw Vicia sativa. Increasing treatment of V. sativa lead to a decrease of liver damages. Inclusion of raw and soaked vetch seeds in rations affected adversely all parameters examined in laying hens. But alleviation was observed when soaked and boiled vetch seeds (SBCV) were fed. The results of these experiments indicated that soaked&boiled Vicia sativa seeds may safely be used at a 25% level in rations of laying hens.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate agronomic characteristics, forage quality, and dry matter (DM) yield of hairy vetch 'Cold green', common vetch 'Maxivesa', 'Wild common', 'Rasina', 'Morava', and 'Blanchefleur', at Seongju in Kyeongbuk from 2010 to 2012. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications. Vetchs were seeded on the 10th of Oct. 2010 and on the 3rd of Oct. 2011. Vetch plants were harvested on the 4th of May 2011 and on the 10th of May in 2012. 'Cold green' and 'Wild common' exhibited greater cold tolerance than other cultivars. Fifty percent-flowering of 'Cold green' occurred on the 22nd of Apr., whereas that of 'Wild common' occurred on the 26th of Apr. and those of 'Rasina' and 'Blanchefleur' occurred on 28th of Apr. and that of 'Maxivesa' occurred on 17th of May. The DM yield of 'Cold green' was higher (p<0.05) than all other cultivars, whereas the DM yield of 'Wild common' was higher (p<0.05) than those of the remaining 4 cultivars. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested 'Wild common' vetch is be recommendable for cultivation where increased DM production is sought.
This study was conducted to evaluate overwintering of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), biomass, and inorganic N concentration in soil to verify the adaptability of eight cultivars of hairy vetch into country. Winter survival rate was higher for the hairy vetch cultivars, such as Hungvillosa or Ostsaat, than those of Minnie, Oregon common, and TTF1, which affected amount of biomass of each hairy vetch, with higher biomass observed in Hungvillosa or Ostsaat cultivar. There were no significant difference for the mineral nutrients of each hairy vetch cultivar. Inorganic N concentration in soil was increased at 10 days after mowing by application of Hungvillosa and Ostsaat cultivars that had highly produced N content from the raw materials.

The object of this experiment was to suggest the optimum utilization upon rye and hairy vetch crops in Daejeon area. The field trials were conducted from 2002 to 2004 at Chungnam National University in order to evaluate the dry matter yield and quality of rye, hairy vetch, and rye+hairy vetch mixtures. The experiment was designed with split plots (main plot : seeding rate as rye mono culture, hairy vetch monoculture, rye 80%+hairy vetch 20%, rye 60%+hairy vetch 40%, and sub plot : 4 cutting stages as boot, heading, anthesis, milk). The average DM yield for 2 years had a difference on seeding rate and harvesting stages. The DM yield of rye monoculture was higher than those of the other seeding rates. There were significant increases in advanced stages in all treatments. In chemical composition, they also had a difference on seeding rates and growth stages. Hairy vetch monoculture was higher in crude protein (CP) and dry matter digestibility (DMD), but lower in fibrous compound than those of the other seeding rates (p<0.01). The crude protein dry matter (CPDM) and digestible dry matter yield was higher in rye 80%+hairy vetch 20% mixture when it was harvested at anthesis to milk stages. The results of this experiment indicated that when it was harvested at anthesis to the milk stages, rye 80%+hairy vetch 20% mixture was more effective in enhancing the DM yield and forage quality in Daejeon area.
This experiment was conducted to study the spring productivity and feeding value of hairy vetch varieties. We also measured DM yield and feeding value by analyze CP and CF that authors made possible to calculate TDN and RFV. The results can be summarized as follows; Dry matter yield were increased earlier autumn seeding date and later cut in spring. Differences of dry matter yield in earlier cut in spring was high in order of Ostsaat, Welta, Vv4712, Penn-02, Common and Minnie. Crude protein(CP) yield was increased when earlier autumn seeding date and later cut in spring. Total digestible nutrient(TDN) yield of hairy vetch varieties was decreased when later autumn seeding date, and was increased when later cut in spring. TDN yield was highest in Ostsaat and Welta varieties had highest dry matter yield. Acid detergent fiber(ADF) content was decreased when later autumn seeding date and was increased when later cut in spring. Neutral detergent fiber(NDF) content was decreased when later autumn seeding date. Average values for relative feed value(RFV) were 157% and 132% in both cut. It shows that a high feed value in all of hairy vetch varieties. Above all, the results presented that the optimal seeding date for cultivating hairy vetch in the central region of Korea is between the 10th to the 20th of September. Because Ostsaat and Welta had significantly high dry matter yield we expected Ostsaat and Welta have a higher wintering ability.
Forage legumes are being used as an important source of protein for dairy farm as well as nitrogen fertilizer. This experiment was conducted to evaluate forage production and quality of five legumes at Cheonan Yonam College Experimental Livestock Farm for 1 year(2001-2002). Five legumes were crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) 'Tibbee', hairy vetch(Vicia villosa Roth) 'Common', red clover(Trifolium pratense L.) 'Kenland', persian clover(Trifolium resupinatum L.) 'Leeton', alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) 'Vernal'. All legumes were shown cold hardiness of 8 rating or higher except crimson clover(7 rating). Flowering stage was observed 23th of April for crimson clover, 13th of May for hairy vetch, 3rd of May for red clover, and 12th of May for alfalfa. But persian clover didn't at harvest. Dry rnatter(DM) of crimson clover(17.6%) was the highest among legumes. In DM and total digestible nutrients(TDN) yields, crimson clover and hairy vetch were higher than those of other legumes. The crude protein of hairy vetch(20.5%) was the highest among legumes. In neutral detergent fiber(NDF) and acid detergent fiber(ADF), persian clover was the lowest(35.0% and 25.0%). Calculations of relative feed value(RFV) based on NDF and ADF of legumes were over 125(Prime degree) except hairy vetch. RFV and TDN of persian clover were the highest among legumes. According to the results of this study, crimson clover and hairy vetch are excellent in forage yield. Persian clover is superior in forage quality among legumes.
The aim of this study was to compare in vitro gas production kinetics, metabolizable energy (ME), organic matter digestibility (OMD) and microbial protein (MP) production of widely used legume hays in ruminant nutrition in Turkey. Gas production were determined at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h and their kinetics were described using the equation p = a+b ($1-e^{-ct}$). There were significant differences among legume hays in terms of chemical composition. The crude protein content of legume hays ranged from 11.7 to 18.6% of dry matter (DM); crude fat from 2.1 to 3.5% DM; neutral detergent fiber from 35.6 to 52.0% DM; acid detergent fiber from 32.0 to 35.5% DM and acid detergent lignin 1.7 to 11.0% DM. Total gas production after 96 h incubation ranged between 61.67 and 76.00 ml/0.200 g of substrate. At 24, 72 and 96 h incubation the total gas production for common vetch were significantly (p<0.01) higher than those of the other legume hays. The ME, OMD and MP of legume hays ranged from 9.09 to 11.12 MJ/kg DM, 61.30 to 75.54% and 90.35 to 138.05 g/kg DM, respectively. The ME, OMD and MP of common vetch was significantly (p<0.01) higher than those of the other hays due to low cell-wall contents and high crude protein. At the end of the experiment, differences in chemical composition of legume hays resulted in the differences in the in vitro gas production, gas production kinetics and the estimated parameters such as ME, OMD and MP. Common vetch can be recommended to hay producers and ruminant breeders, due to high ME, OMD and MP production.
Demand for the domestic hairy vetch seed production will be increased with the increasing interest of environment-friendly agriculture in Korea. This study was conducted during from 2000 fall to 2003 spring at upland field of National Institute of Crop Science in Suwon, Korea to compare wheat and triticale (TC) as stake crop of hairy vetch (HV), and to know proper seeding rates and ratios between TC and HV for the maximum HV seed production. As supporting crop of HV, TC was superior to wheat at the points of higher HV seed yield, stronger TC stalk for supporting, consistence of ripening stage of two seeds. In seeding method, row seeding was superior to broadcast seeding at the points of less lodging and higher HV seed yield. HV seed yield decreased with the increase of TC seeding rate in mixture cropping (row seeding), particularly at TC seeding rates over 5kg/10a. HV seed yield increased with the increase of HV seeding rate at the condition of TC seeding rates under 5kg/10a in spite of higher lodging of mixed crops at higher HV seeding rate due to higher HV aboveground dry matter. Maximum HV seed yield was obtained at TC seeding rate of $1\~1.5kg/10a$ as indicating HV seed yield 176kg/l0a (CV. Madison) at seeding rate of TC 1kg/10a + HV 2 kg/10a in 2001, and HV seed yield 96kg/10a (CV. Common) at seeding rate of TC 1.5kg/10a + HV 4.5kg/10a in 2003. Use of all-purpose combine harvester for harvesting and appliance for separation of mixed seeds using centrifugal force, which are prerequisite for HV seed production, was excellent in the simultaneous seeds production system of HV and TC.
