Differences in priorities of high school students' knowledge activated in laboratory and earth environmental contexts (고등학교 학생들의 문제해결에서 맥락에 따라 활성화되는 지식의 우선순위차이)

  • Four science concepts were selected from high school science textbook to investigate the differences in priorities of students knowledge activated during solving earth science problems in laboratory and earth science environmental contexts. Two items, one for laboratory context and the other for earth environmental context, were developed for earth selected concept The subjects were constituted of 192 students in 11th grade and 196 in 12th grade in one senior high school. Students' responses were categorized using graph models and analyzed in terms of 'Common Activated Knowledge'(CAK). and 'Specific Activated Knowledge'(SAK) across students' cognitive frames, grades, and sex. As contextual differences of the problems increased, context effects in priorities of CAK were reported in favor of laboratory context, on the contrary those of SAK in favor of earth environmental context. Context effects were reported across cognitive frames, especially students with laboratory cognitive frames showed more significant context effects than others. Lower graders and girls showed relatively large context effects. The results of this study showed that science concepts learned in a laboratory context are not easily transferred to earth environmental context. Therefore, special instructional strategies should be developed to overcome the context effect s according to activated knowledges with high priorities in laboratory and earth environmental context.

A mathematical model to recover missing monitoring data of foundation pit

  • A new method is presented to recover missing deformation data of lateral walls of foundation pit when the monitoring is interrupted; the method is called Dynamic Mathematical Model - Parameter Interpolation. The deformation of lateral walls of foundation pit is mainly affected by the type of supporting structure and the situation of constraints, therefore, this paper mainly studies the two different kinds of variation law of deep horizontal displacement when the lateral walls are constrained or not, proposes two dynamic curve models of normal distribution type and logarithmic type, deals with model parameters by interpolating and obtains the parameters of missing data, then missing monitoring data could be Figured out by these parameters. Compared with the result from the common average method which is used to recover missing data, in the upper 2/3 of the inclinometer tube, the result by using this method is closer to the actual monitoring data, in the lower 1/3 part of the inclinometer tube, the result from the common average method is closer to the actual monitoring data.

  • The realization of carbon neutrality requires cooperation from various stakeholders and the utilization of a governance system. The criteria for participating members are crucial for the successful operation of governance, and it is especially necessary for experts who can provide scientific advice for policy implementation to share a framework for successful consensus. In this study, governance model theory and model structure, governance common success factors by case, and the application of governance cases in the climate and environmental sector of Seoul, were investigated and analyzed to derive common success factors in order to present the activity standards of the science and technology experts participating in governance. The study of the model theory suggested that the model structure is commonly composed of a basic condition-process-result structure, and it was confirmed that common success factors can be derived at the process stage which is the activity period of members. Through the case study of common success factors, overlapping factors were found to be reliability, accountability, transparency, networks, and related factors. The validity of the common success factors was verified using the analysis results of satisfaction survey data from Seoul Governance Committee participants. The results confirmed that reliability was the most valuable factor followed by networks, transparency, and responsibility, and it was found that the related factors were appropriately derived. The findings of this study are expected to be used as an activity factor for science and technology experts to increase the acceptability and effectiveness of carbon-neutral policies in the future.

Enhancement of Seismic Stacking Energy with Crossdip Correction for Crooked Survey Lines

  • In seismic reflection data processing, the crossdip correction effectively focuses the stacking energy near the sharp bends of a crooked survey line. Additionally, approximate 3-D information on the reflector (e.g., true crossdip angle and lateral continuity) are locally investigated as a by-product of the crossdip correction procedure. Improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio and estimation of reflector crossdip attitude are tested, in terms of both common midpoint bin direction and processing-line type, using synthetic seismic reflection data. To effectively image the reflection energy near bends in seismic survey lines, straight-line binning is preferred to slalom-line binning.

  • This paper presents a experimental evidence of the generation of the earth potential and communication line noise from the electric railway. There is a critical measurement err in case of measuring the electrical power induced noise voltage and degree of cable balance in the field of earth potential generated. As a results, it has been found that the conventional cable has more noise immunity than shielded cable near the railway where the earth current flows through the sheath layer.

  • The characteristics of the rare earth phosphors intensifying screen (LM-6, Grenex-8) as compared with $CaWO_4$ intensifying screen had been studied utilizing several common x-ray films, and found the following results. 1. Compared with the conventional CaWO4 intensifying screen, the rare earth phosphors intensifying screen was found to be more sensitive over to 1.26-3.47 times. So the radiation exposure could be reduced to 1/1.26 -1/3.47. 2. Sharpness as well as the film speed were both increased. So the motion blurring and geometrical unsharpness could be decreased. 3. In spite of that the film speed was increased, photographic contrast was kept up. Therefore, the more ideal film of greater latitude could be obtained. 4. The effects of the rare earth phosphors intensifying screen would be much increased as using with orthochromatic x-ray films.

Pre-service Teachers' Conceptions of the Nature of Science

  • We have studied 73 pre-service science teachers' conceptions about the nature of science (NOS) using 120 true-false test items based on AAAS Benchmarks statements. We have found that participants have inadequate understanding of the NOS, especially in understanding of five categories of conceptions; change and continuity in science, bias in scientific investigations, hypothesis in scientific investigations, things common in science, and science ethics. The result also indicates that there is a difference between primary pre-service teachers and secondary pre-service teachers. From the analysis of consistency, we also found that this inadequate understanding comes from confusion rather than misconception. All the results support that there is a need of intense pre-service teacher education concerning thenature of science.

  • It is really hard for the material factors to basically improve quality of life, since it is the only partial means of the survival and activity of life. Development of Eigen Shin-Tou-Jil(Proper Body·Earth materials), therefore, must be concentrated on providing man with essential meaning of life, not with simply economic advantage. Eigen Shin-Tou-Jil(Proper Body·Earth materials) which is formed through long passage of time in the original environments that include the climate and nature features of a special region, the representative examples are like Korea Bong-sam(a kind of genseng) of Yellow Earth etc. Unfolding the Eigen Shin-Tou-Jil(Proper Body·Earth materials) by the Algorithm of Human-ware means the development for manifesting individual eigen motives and traits as subject of behavior(Gene-ware). It is because all plants, animals, inanimate objects, including Human, have evolved with their own values in the ecosystem. It was reported that a Baeksong(white pine tree), grown well up in TongEeDong, Seoul, Korea had rarely grown up during the period suppressed by Japan. By the developments of Bio-Engineering, we also found that 40% of gene base sequence of C. Elegance(a kind of worm) is identical to that of characteristic Human. In this reason, through considering common characteristics between Human and Nature, the developments of Eigen Shin-Tou-Jil(Proper Body·Earth materials) must begin with epoch for manifesting and understanding individual's Eigen motives and traits as subject of behavior(Gene-ware)

  • Four science concepts were selected from high school earth science textbook to investigate the differences in students knowledges activated in laboratory and earth environmemtal contexts. Two items, one is for laboratory and the other for earth environmental contexts, were develped for each selected concept. Students' responses were analyzed in terms of 'Common Activated Knowledges' (CAK), 'Specific Activated Knowledges'(SAK) across students' cognitive frames, grades and sexes. As contextual differences of the problems increased, gender contributed more than other variables to the frequencies of activating CAK and SAK. Context effects were also reported across cognitive frames for CAK, but SAK became more avtivated when the contextual differences of the items become smaller. As a whole, students with laboratory cognitive frames showed more significant context effects than others. Students in 11th grade, with scientific frames and with earth science cognitive frames showed relatively small context effects. The results of the study showed that sciene concepts learned in a laboratory context are not usually transferred spontaneously to earth environmental contexts. Special instructional strategies should developed to overcome the context effects.

An Astronomer's View on the Current College-Level Textbook Descriptions of Tides

  • In the equilibrium theory of tides by Newton, tide on the Earth is a phenomenon driven by differential gravity contributed both by the Sun and the Moon. Due to the direct link of the generic tidal effect to the oceanic tides, college students in the earth science education department are exposed to this theory through oceanography lectures as well as astronomy lectures. Common oceanography textbooks adopt a non-inertial reference frame fixed to the Earth in which the fictitious, centrifugal force appears. This has a potential risk to provide misconceptions among students in various aspects including the followings: 1) this is how Newton originally derived the equilibrium theory of tides, and 2) the tide is a phenomenon appearing only in rotating systems. We show that in astronomy, a much simpler description, which employs the inertial frame, is generally used to explain tides and thus causes less confusion. We argue that the description used in astronomy is preferable both in the viewpoints of simplicity and ease of interpretation. Moreover, on a historical basis, an inertial frame was adopted by Newton in Principia to explain tides. Thus, the description used in astronomy is consistent with Newton's original approach. We also present various astrophysical tides which do not comply with the concept of centrifugal force in general. We therefore argue that the description used in oceanography should be compensated by that in astronomy, due to its complexity, historical inconsistency and limited applicability.
